This association offers to the public a secure de- pository for small savings, and facilities for obtain- ing loans on real estate, on terms very advantageous to those wishing to procure homesteads of moderate value. Security is insured toits depositors by a cash capital, paid in by its stockholders, which, under the statnte, can in no case be withdrawn until all its liabilities are discharged, even though this should exhaust every dollar both of the capital and of the reserved fund. The statute also positively prohibits any purchase or investment which would bring the corporation into debt. Office northeast corner of California and Webb streets.

The objects of this institute are the establish- ment of a library, reading-room, collection of a cabi- net, scientific apparatus, works of art, and other literary and scientific purposes. The society has a Reading Room well supplied with the leading scien- tific and literary periodicals of the day. and a valu- able library containing about fifteen thousand vol- umes, including many rare scientific works. Stran- gers visiting the city are always welcome at the rooms of the institute. During the years 1858, 1860, 1864, 1865, 1868, and 1869, this institute presented to the attention of the people of California their sec- ond, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh annual exhibitions, each of which was attended with the most complete success. Any person acceptable to the Board of Directors may become a stockholder by paying five dollars for the first and second install- ments on the capital stock, and one dollar and fifty

The expressed objects of the society are to collect and preserve information connected with the early settlement and subsequent conquest of the country, and to perpetuate the memory of those -whose sa- gacity, energy, and enterprise induced them to settle in the wilderness and become the founders of a new State. All who were in California prior to the first day of January, 1850, are eligible to membership. Any who have rendered distinguished or important services to the society or State, may be admitted as honorary members. The roll of the society em- braces the names of over thirteen hundred mem- bers. Regular meetings of the society take place ou the first Monday of each month. Annnal election of officers on the seventh day of July, the anniver- sary of the conquest of California, aud of the rais- ing of the American flag on its soil. Annual cele- bration on the ninth of September, the anniversary of the Admission of California into the Union.
