Capital stock issued, $100,398,050.88. The funded deht is reported at $48,480,000 00.
Total gross earnings, $36,358,269.88, of which $18,- 876,863.86 was from passengers, and $17,596,267,50 from freight. Gross earnings per mile of road operated $15,- 718.96. Net earnings have been $11,217,511.28. Operating expenses, $26,136,787.70. Amount paid for taxes, $1,996,938.28. Dividends paid, $4,756,828.00.
Number of passengers carried, 49,783,689; tons of freight carried, 14,815.851. Total miles run were 25,- 502 060, of which 12,724,761 were by passenger trains, and 6,970,898 by freight trains.
There are 384 stations in the state, with an average distance of 2.68 miles between each. Number of high- way grade crossings in the state, 1,015. The total number of locomotives is 975; number of cars, 18,986. The number of employees, including officers, in opera- ting the roads is 25,877; compensation for same, $16, 079,950.74.
During the past year, 28 passengers were injured, 1 of these fatally; of employees 220 were injured, 27 fatally: trespassers, 156, of which 89 were fatal.

County Coroners and Medical Graminers.
THE law of June 1, 1883, provides for the appointment of County Coroners for three years, and cach Coroner to have appointment of a Deputy, and & Medical Examiner, for each town. SECTION 4 .- " When any person shall come to a sudden, violent, or untimely death, and when any person shall be found dead, the manner of whose death is not known, any one who shall become aware of such death shall forthwith report the same to the Medical Examiner for the Town in which the body lies," etc. If the Medical Examiner is satisfied that the death was not caused by the criminal act, omission or carelessness of another, he reports the case to the Coroner for record; but if, in the opinica of the Medical Examiner, such death was caused by the criminal act, omission or carelessness of another, or is attended with suspicious circumstances, he immediately notifies the Coroner who proceeds forthwith to take charge of the body and make all necessary inquiry concerning the cause and manner of death.
