WADSWORTH ATHENEUM,


624 Main st., is a granite building of 100 ft. in length and 80 ft. in depth in center wings, and 70 ft. in depth in outside wings. It is of the castelated structure, with central towers 70 feet in height and corner buttresses 56 ft. in height, with an extensive brick addition on the east of Tudor architecture, which is used, on the first floor, for the Library of the HARTFORD LIBRARY ASSOCIATION; and, on the second floor, for the WAT- KINSON LIBRARY with the library of the HISTORICAL SOCIETY adjoining. The first floor of the main build- ing on the North is used for the PUBLIC READING room and TRUSTEES room. The whole South division of the main building is occupied by the CONNECTICUT HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The Central and Northern por- tions of the main building on the 2d floor are occupied as a PUBLIC ART GALLERY and for the ART SCHOOL. The building was erected by voluntary contributions of citizens, with the land and fence, cost over $200.000. Commenced April, 1842, and completed in July, 1844, and the additions in January, 1893.
