PINNEY,*
HUMPHREY,f born in Somerset County, England ; came to America with the Rev. John Warliam in the ship Mary and John, which sailed from Plymouth, England, March 30, 1630, and settled at Dorchester, Mass, where he m. Mary Hull, who came from England in the same vessel with him. He was a person of considerable respectability, being called Mr. In 1635 he removed to and settled in Windsor, Ct. His residence was on the west side of the Main Street, about one mile north of the present Congregational Meet- ing-house, on a lot north and adjoining the present residence of Mr. John
# Compiled by HENRY BRIOHIT, Esq., of Northampton, Mass.
+ IIUMPHREY PINNEY'S immediate ancestors appear to have resided in Broadway, Somersetshire, England. From the will of bis uncle, Edmund Pinney, which was proved hy his nephew, IIum- phrey, administrator, in 1631, we learn that the said Edmund resided in Broadway, and that his father ( Humphrey's grandfather) was buried in Broadway churchyard, and in a tomb called the Pinney Tomb. In this will Edmund Pinney left an annuity of 2Ss Sd payable from 3 pieces of land situated in the parish of Ile Abbots, or Abbots Ile, which is to he paid yearly in quarterly pay- ments, hy the wardens or overseers of Broadway Church, to two poor people of Broadway. This legacy is still regularly paid by Wm. Speake, Esq., of Jordan's, the present owner of the property, aud its recipients are two poor persous by the name of Standerwick. It is a somewhat curious coincidence that the Standerwick family were intimately related to the testator, and appear in his will as legatees and executors of certain legacies. In this will, which is remarkably curious and interesting, certain legacies are ordered to be paid by Humphrey Pinne, , viz: £4 yearly to Nicholas Pinney, and 20s yearly to Wm. Watts, during their lives, payable quarterly, at the four principal feasts of the year (the Birth of our Lord Jesus; the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary ; St. John the Baptist, and St. Michael the Archangel). The said payments to he made in the churchyard of Broadway, upon a tomh or monument called Piuney's Tomb, with certain penalties imposed for any delinquency or default of regular payments.
Broadway Church is a small aud ancient, though beautiful structure, situated in a picturesque churchyard, adorned with yew trees, located on a little knoll, in an extensive valley, about two miles from the commencement of the hill which terminates iu the Blackdon Range. This hill is iu the adjoining parish of Bucklaud aud St. Mary's, and commands one of the finest views in

Somerset County. Broadway is said to have taken its name from a Roman road which lead to Nevocke forest, and whose breadth made an impression on the Saxons. The forest has long sinee disappeared, but there are still remains of a Roman encampment on Blackdon Hill. Broad- way itself is a long, straggliug village, with more than 400 agricultural inhabitants, an alms- house, &c. The church is quite by itself at the extremity of the village. Pinney's Ground, so ealled, although paying 20s Sd to two poor persons in Broadway, is in the Ile Abbots or Abbots Ile, an adjoining village, boasting of a still more beautiful little fabrie of a church.
