1808. May 12th, at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, James Walker was married to Mary Clarke, by Rev. Mr. William Hickman.
1809. Aug. 16th, on Monday, was born James Miers Walker, son of James and Mary Walker. He died March 10th, aged 27 years, 4 months, 8 days.
1815. Joanna Truitt, March 17th, on Friday, daughter to John and Sarah Truitt.
Sarah Pinner, daughter of Miers Clarke and Aletta, his wife, died in North Carolina, January 3d, 1871.

1789. Our family has the measles. In July, Polly, my little daughter, had a gathering in her head.
August 24. I was taken very sick. Lidia Hall stayed with me. September 15. Sister and I went to fathers.
September 16. Came home. Parted with the two old ladies from New York, my father's cousins. We may never see them again in this world.
September 19. I went to see my sister.
October 10. About 10 o'clock at night as I was returning home, I saw a strange light in the house, that I could not account for, the house being fastened up, and no one in it.
October 31. I went to see my sister. She told me of two dreams she had dreamed. In one she was dressed in white, and her company told her she did not look as if she belonged to this world. In the other her child was born, and she was to die three days afterwards.

November 5. My sister and I went to the store at the bridge.
November 7. We went to warp at Mrs. Russels, neither of us very well.
November 14. Went to see my sister. She was poorly.
November 25. Went to see my sister and stayed all night. A most violent storm came on, the wind in the East.
November 29. Polly Draper came here.
November 30. Monday. Went to my father's. As it was snowing and very cold I stayed all night.
December 1. I came home, and went to my Sister's, to get help about sizeing up a web.
December 2. I got the piece out that I had in the loom, and got it to work.
December 4. I wove on it all day. Just at night Mrs. Russel sent for me. I went over to see her. About 10 o'clock at night she was delivered of a daughter. About 12 I got home. My Brother Isaac Clowes came down this afternoon for sister and me to go to see our Dadda and Mamma.
December 5. In the morning my Brother came over and said that Sister Sally was taken with an ague, and was very sick. I went right away to see her, and found her sickness most violent. Mamma came down in the afternoon. About 9 o'clock at night I sent for Grandmamma. Her violent sickness brought on her labour. On Sunday the 6th at sunrise she was delivered of a son. Not being well I went home. In the afternoon I went back. I found my sister in a sleepy condition. I walked home. December 7. This morning she complained of a sharp pain in her head, and about 9 o'clock she had a convulsion. She would frequently cry out: "Oh my head! my poor head!" About 2 in the afternoon she was taken with another convulsion, and that left her speechless. She lay in this distressing con- dition until the 9th day about 372 o'clock it pleased God to take her into His safe keeping. She was 20 years and 6 months old this day lacking 3 days.
December 11. The burial-but the Parson could not come. Parson Willson preached her funeral Monday the 14th.
December 23. A violent pain in my head and eyes.
December 24. Some better.
December 25. Christmas Day. Go to see my Dadda and Mama.
December 26 & 27. My sister's little baby had the measles, and Comfort Staton's child is sick.
December 28. My father very sick. We send to the Doctor.

January 6. I go to my father's. He is at Lewes town.
January 7. Came home and went to see Mrs. Heveloe. She was very sick.
January 8. In the morning she was some better.
January 16. Go to my father's.
January 17 & 18. Came home. Comfort was some better.
January 20. Mrs. Heaveloe died, after a long tedious spell of sickness.
January 22. I was at her burying. She was a very kind neighbor. She lived one mile from me.
January 23. Charles Conwell died. A young man, married about three months. His widow with child. He lived two miles from me. Abner Lamb died the same day. He lived about. five miles away.
January 30. Was at Conwell's burying. From there rode to my father's about 3 o'clock at night. We thought my sister's little son was dying. Sent word for its father about 10 o'clock. It got better by the next morning.
February 1. On Monday my Dadda came here. He gave me an Almanack and a paper of pins. From here he rode to Lewes- town.
February 2. Wove all day.
February 3 & 4. Wove on my piece.
February 8. Wove some but was not well.
February 13. Should have gone to my father's but was not well. February 14. Harry Fisher and Sarah Truit were buried. Fisher lived 7 miles from here, and Sarah Truit 5 miles.
February 16. On Tuesday mama sent me word that Dadda was very sick. I rode to see father as soon as I could and found him in a sleepy condition. We had means from the Doctor.
February 17. My father was very sick.
February 18. A little better. Sat up some.
February 19. We thought him a great deal better. He walked out of his room. I ventured to go home, brother Isaac with me. We stopped to see two sick neighbors. Jonathan Lewis died 1 mile from here.
February 20. Mary Miller died 1 mile from me.
February 21. Miers gone to Lewises. On Sunday Mama sent for `me to go and see my father. He was worse than ever before. I rode up there as fast as I could and found him exceeding bad. He had a piercing pain in his breast and side, and the worst cough that I ever saw any person have. We sent for the Doc- tors on Monday.
February 22, 23. There were two Doctors with him but they were of no manner of service. Everything was done for him we poor creatures could do, but it was of no service.
February 24. At 5 o'clock in the morning it pleased God to ease his body by taking his soul into His safe keeping. Thus my dear and tender parent is gone. A most violent pleurisy has ended his life the 9th day of his sickness. He is this day 59 years, 3 months, and 18 days old. He lived 32 years, 5 months, and 17 days with my Mama, and I never knew them to have any anger the time of his life. bor in sickness or in health. His greatest anxiety was to love mercy, justice, and truth. In doing justice towards God and man, his parents saw his young mind improve in every virtue. February 26. Mr. Willson preached his funeral. Yonder like a faded flower lies the dust he has abandoned. Sarah Claypool died. Lived about 2 miles from me. Patience Coverdale died the same day, 6 miles from me.
February 28. Mary Lewis died. her husband died nine days before. They lived about 1 mile from me. The sickliest time that I ever knew, there is hardly an individual without complaint. Wm. Chace died the same da 9 miles. I was at Sarah Clay- pool's burying.
March 2. Dorman Cade died 6 miles from here.
March 3. A sister of Chace's died, 9 miles from here.
March 10. John Clifton died, about 8 miles, and John Caddy died about 7 miles from here.
March 11. Another of the Chace family died, 9 miles, and Sarah Heavelo died just in her 17 year, 1 mile.
March 17. I hear there are 4 more of the Chace family dead, I am told that out of 10 there are but 3 left. Lord have mercy. Thy arrows fly not at random.
March 17. Elizabeth Jeams died 6 miles off, and Mr. Hinmon died, 6 miles off.
March 19. A child of Chaces scalded to death. Rachel Heaveloe died in her 19th year. Mrs. Heaveloe, her 2 daughters and a negro child have died since this day 2 months, just 1 mile from me.
March 21. Reece Rickets died about 4 miles from me.
March 24. John Fisher died. About 3 miles off.
March 25. Luke Watson's wife died. Lived 6 miles away. George Wiltbank and one of his children died. 7 miles.
March 30. One of Mr. Russel's children died. Mrs. Russel left the child in bed when she got up in the morning. About break- fast time, on going up to get it, she found it was dead. Her surprise was very great. I was out back of our garden and heard great lamentations. I could not imagine what it could be. I walked up to the house and found what was the matter. March 31. Parson Wilson died about 7 miles from me. He was a very fine Parson and an oblidgeing Doctor. He died in the 60th year of his age, greatly missed and lamented.
April 4. Sarah Corwidda died. She lived 4 miles from me. She was a great loss to her children and family.
April 8. Sarah Finley died. 4 miles.
April 9. Nelly Draper died 7 miles. Both young women.
April 19. Mary Russel died very suddenly, only a few hours' sick- ness. Lived about 112 miles.
April 24. My Grandmama was here.
April 25. Sunday, the old lady went home, well and hearty. Miers went to church at Cedar Creek. (St. Matthew's.)

July 4. Sunday. Went to quarterly meeting. There was a great fright among the people. A crazy man threw an axe up at the meeting house windows. It struck somebody, but I did not see the person. The second preaching was under the trees, a very great number of people, and the same man, they said, got a gun and was going to fire it through the crowd. The first thing I knew the people were screaming and halloing, and rushing almost over one another. I could not imagine what could be the matter ; such a noise in the time of the sermon, when all should have been peace, and quietness. Some said the Devil appeared; some one thing, and some another. When I found out the truth, that it was the crazy man, with his gun, I came back to Mamma, and from there home with a very bad pain in my head. The dust and heat almost overcame me.
July 5. Billy did work here.
July 6. Brother Peter, Sarah & Polly Draper came here.
July 7. Went to the harvest at John Clark's.
July 8. They went home.
July 9 & 10. I was at the bridge.
July 11. Sunday.

July 20 & 21. Hannah and Liddy Russell here to see me. I am better.
July 22, 23 & 24. I went to Mamma's.
July 25. Came home on Sunday.
July 26, 27, 28 & 29. Mamma here. Still very dry.
July 30. My Brothers came here. Almost 4 weeks since we have had a good rain.
July 31. Mamma & the Boys went home. A fine rain this after- noon. Thanks be to the Great Providence. Our corn is in a manner burnt up, and the grass is dying.
August 1. Sunday. Very likely for rain. I should have gone to Church.
August 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7. Very seasonable weather; everything takes new life. Sally Draper & Peter Jackson & his wife here. Rain this afternoon.
August 8. Sunday. Very showery all day.
August 9. They went home. I went to see Mrs. Russel this after- noon.
August 10, 11 & 12. Not very well. Very warm. A pain in my head. August 13. Sarah Draper came here & we were at the singing school. August 14. She rode home. I with her. From there to Mamma's.
August 15 & 16. We came home from Mamma's. Very warm. August 17, 18, 19 & 20. I was at the singing school at Mr. Russel's. August 21 & 22. Sunday. Rainy this morning. Could not go to church.
August 23, 24, 25 & 26. A bad pain in my breast.
August 27 & 28. We started for Philadelphia. The tide being very low we could not go out.
August 29. Still could not get out.
August 30. The wind being in the East we came home.
August 31. We rode down to the boat again.
September 1. About 1 o'clock we got out of the mouth of the Creek. About 4 o'clock we struck on the Shears, a very dangerous place. The wind blew fresh & the waters were in a great rage. Everybody was very much frightened, but the Blessed Pre- server of all poor mortals preserved us through all danger. Next morning we were up against New Castle. About 4 o'clock we arrived at Philadelphia. Got up to Mr. Irwin's about 5 o'clock.
September 3. We walked about a great deal in the afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Irwin & the young - Cousin & myself drank tea at Mrs. Ashmead's.
September 4. We drank tea at Mrs. Stretcher's.
September 5. Sunday. I stayed out almost all day. We walked to church and heard a very fine sermon.
September 6. I walked down to Mrs. Stretcher's and dined there & drank tea nowhere, not being well.

September 7. After dinner I walked down to Mrs. Snoud's, and drank tea there. The old lady was very glad to see me. Stayed all night at Mrs. Stretcher's.
September 8. Walked home to Mrs. Irwin's. Her two daughters and myself walked down to Mrs. Ashmead's. From there we walked to Major Moore's where my Brothers lodged, to know when the vessel was to go. We found it was to go the next morning at 5 o'clock.
September 9. We took leave of our friends and made sail.
September 10. We anchored about 7 o'clock just without the mouth of the river.
September 11. About 2 o'clock we found ourselves on a shoal, but it was very calm and smooth. We lay there until flood tide. About 10 o'clock we made sail again. Got down against Mushmillion and there anchored. About 2 o'clock made sail again.
September 12. We anchored off Slaughter Creek, the weather very stormy and wind from the East, so that we could not get into the Creek. When the tide made, we turned about and ran into Mushmillion. There we got ashore, and tried to put her off but could not. My two Brothers, my Cousin and myself walked down to Cedar Creek, 7 miles, and there we hired horses and got home the same night. Our people were very glad to see us, being very uneasy about us.
September 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 & 18. Not very well. Caught a great cold on board the vessel. Rode up to Mamma's.
September 19. Sunday. Rode home.
September 20. Not very well.

January 6. Came home. Mamma with us. John Clarke taken sick this night.
January 7. Send for Doctor Hall. Mamma, Miers, and myself stay all night.
January 8. A great deal better. Mamma rode home.
January 9. Sunday. This day 13 months ago my dear sister died.
January 10, 11, 12, & 13. Mrs. Hazzard died. She lived about 212 miles from here.
January 15. This day I walked over to see my Aunt Polly Dorman. She is very sick. I don't think she will recover.
January 16. Sunday. I went to see my Aunt again. Stayed and minded her. I had not been home very long the next morn- ing before they sent for me. I went back again and stayed with her until she died. She departed about 3 Oclock Tues- day morning.
January 18. Of the month she was born the 7th day of this same month 1739. I have but one Aunt alive, and not one Uncle on my Dadda's side.
January 20. The funeral sermon was preached by Dr. McKee.
January 21, 22, & 23. A great many people sick.
January 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, & 31. The last day of the month.
February. Mrs. Waller died and 2 of her daughters lie sick 2 miles from me.
February 7. She is buried. Grandmamma came here from the bury- ing. Shepherd Conwell is taken sick and could not get home. Caught cold at the funeral.
February 12. We go to see Betty Jackson. We heard she was very sick. William Hazzard died. He lives about 2 miles from me. A great many sick, Edward Ross.
February 15. He lives 212, Sally Rowland, the widow Rowland's daughter.
February 18. Griffith Jones died, about 7 miles, & Andone Will- kins, he lives about 7.

April 24. Easter Day. Polly a great deal better. Betty & Polly Heaveloe here, and Aunt Caly Young, and 3 more people today.
April 25 & 26. The child seems quite well, thanks be to God for His mercy.
April 27, 28, 29, & 30. We all ride up to Mamma's.
May 1. I go to Coolspring meeting. Mr. McKee preached there.
May 2 & 3. Milla Clarke came to stay awhile with me. Sally Draper came today.
May 4. Sally went home. I am not well.

May 15. Rode up to Mamma's. They are all well there.
May 16. I came home and met Brother going home. He has been seeing to the cutting of his corn, and to haveing it put on the vessel. Polly has a large red place on her hand and has ague and pains in her head and back, and high fever.
May 22. Still sick and the spot remains.
May 29. We ask the Doctor about it. He thinks it is scurvy. Gave her a warm purge, and it made her very sick.
June 1 & 2. Mamma came down & Polly very sick.
June 3. A fine rain.
June 4. Mamma goes home. Good rain this morning.
June 5. Sunday. I am poorly, and the child also.
June 6-10. Rode up to Mamma's. The Doctor came down with me to see Mr. King's negro with small pox.
June 12. Whitsun Day. So unwell that I cannot sit up. The child still has ague and fever.
June 13. A great day of frolic on the beach. I hear there were a great many there and a great disturbance. Many were hurt. Thompson finishes the ditch.
June 14 & 15. Sally Painter and Betsy & Polly King here.
June 16 & 17. King's negro dies with the small pox.
June 18, 19. Sunday. A very fine rain this afternoon.
June 22. Mamma came down to see us. Polly sick.

August 30. My Grandmamma, Mamma, Aunt, Brother, 3 Cousins, husband, and child, all went down to the beach, together with others. I suppose as an extraordinary company that has gone down for years. There was my Grandmamma, & her Daughter, her Daughter's Daughter, that is myself, and her Daughters Daughter's Daughter, that is my Polly, and she was 6 years old day before yesterday.
August 31. They all rode home in good health, only a little fatigued. September 1. Hessy gets her hat. Costs 26s.
September 3. Polly very sick. Miers goes to John Hazzard's. Rained. I send for Betsy Dorman to come and stay with me.
September 4. Sunday. Betsy went home after the rain was over.
September 10. Hannah Russel very sick yesterday. Sunday the 11th we go to her funeral. We got wet.
September 18. Mamma & Brother Isaac came her. Polly and I not well.
September 25. I went to meeting at Coolspring and heard a very fine sermon. Brother Isaac came home with me. I saw Mamma there. She said that Granny was sick. When I came home Miers and Polly were both sick.
September 26. Miers still sick. Polly is about today.
