A. D. TERBUSH, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born Jan. 7, 1846, at Nanerville, Ill. Enlisted May 16, 1864, as Pr. Co. C, 134th Regt. Il. Inf. Went with regiment to Cairo, Ill .. Columbus, Paducah and May- field, Ky. At expiration of term of service were asked by Gen. Payne to re-enlist, which many did, I among the rest, but Gen. Payne was relieved by Gen. Meri- ditte and the re-enlistment fell through, and we re- turned to Chicago, thence to St. Louis against Gen. Price, when this campaign was over returned to Chi- cago and was mustered out Oct. 25, 1864. Is Post Commander of Custer Post No. 40.

Enlisted July 23. 1862, as Private in Chicago Board of Trade Battery. and discharged as Corporal at close of war at Chicago. 111., July 3. 1865. Engaged in battles as follows: Stone River, Chickamauga, Atlanta Campaign in which were fought battles of Dallas, Peach Tree Creek, Noonday Creek. Decatur, and siege of Atlanta, Lovejoy Station, Jonesboro. Later Nashville. Wilson's Raid through Miss., Ala., and Georgia, Resulting in fights at Selma and Columbus, Ga. Was at Macon, Ga., when Pres. Jefferson Davis was brought in as a prisoner. Never in hospital, not a day's furlough, and always present with my Battery.


JOHN CLARK WARD, Columbia Post No. 706 Chicago. Born at Warren. O., April 13, 1845. Enlisted March. 1863, in Co. B, 44th Battalion Ohio Militia. EEnlisted May 2. 1864, in Co. H. 155th Ohio Inf., mustered in at Camp Dennison, Ohio, May S. Discharged at Camp Dennison Aug. 27. 1864. Service: Repulsed Gen. EDSON C. HOWARD, formerly member Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born Feb, 6, 1845, in town Jf Goodale, Lake County, Ill. Enlisted Aug, 19, 1861, as Drummer boy in Co, F, 37th Regt, Ill. Vol, for the period of three years; serving two years of same on detail as Drum Maj., and was mustered out at end of term, Sept. 29, 1864, Re-enlisted Feb, 27. 1865, as private in Co. H, 153rd Regt, Ill, Vol, for the period of one year, and was promoted to 1st Lt,, in which capacity he served as Quartermaster of his Regt., Chief of Escorts and Orderlies for Gen, A. L. Chetlain, and as Post Inspector of Detachments at Memphis, Tenn., where he was mustered out Sept. 15, 1865, be- cause of the close of the war.


CHAS. PROEBSTING, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chi- cago. Born in Karmen, Westphalia, Germany, Served one year in the Prussian army, On Pres, Lincoln's first call for troops enlisted in Co, E, Sth Ill Inf. (Col. Richard Oglesby), April 25, 1861, and was appointed 2nd Lieut. Mustered out July 25, 1861, Owing to se- vere illness after a long hospital experience. Did not re-enter the service.

ISIDORE EISENSTAEDT, U. S. Grant Post No. 28. Chicago. Born Nov. 24, 1842, at Lissa, Prussia. En- listed in Capt. S. Durains, Squirrell Hunters," State of Ohio in 1862 and was discharged in Sept. 1862, to enlist in Co. F. 31st Ohio Battalion National Guard of date July 11, 1863 and was honorably discharged May 1st. 1866 (State discharge.) Enlisted in the United States service in Co. F. 146 Ohio Vol. Infty., May 2nd. 1864 and was honorably discharged after 4 months service Sept. 7, 1864 at Camp Dennison, Ohio. Was Commander of U. S. Grand Post Grand Army of the Republic in 1906.


GEORGE R. LYON, Waukegan Post No. 374, Waukegan. Born July 19, 1846, in Waukegan, Ill. Enlisted as Priv. June 4, 1862, in Co. C. 69th Ill. Vol. Inf., and mustered out Sept. 27, 1862. Service guarding pris- oners of war, at Camp Douglas, Ill. Re-enlisted Feb. 22, 1864. in Co. K. 64th Ill. Vol. Inf. Mustered out as Orderly Sergt. July 18, 1865, at the end of the war. Service on the Atlanta campaign, Sherman's march to the sea, up through the Carolinas and Grand Review at Washington, D. C., at the close of the war. Charter member and Past Commander of Wau- kegan Post No. 374. G. A. R., also Past Junior Vice Commander Dept. of Ill.


LAMBERT S. LISK, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born April 6, 1842, at Pittstown, Hunterdon Co., N. J. Enlisted Sept. 19, 1861, at Trenton, N. J., in Co. H. 6th N. J. Inf., and was in Gen. Hooker's Div. Was at siege of Yorktown, battles of Williamsburg, Fair Oaks. Wilderness, Seven Days' Fight and the second battle of Bull Run; afterwards was detailed as Assistant Wagon Master at Camp Convalescent, Va. Was dis- charged at same camp on surgeon's certificate of disability, Feb. 10, 1863.


MOSES GRUMBINE, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born July 28, 1843. in Lebanon Co., Pa. Enlisted Aug. 4, 1862, in Co. B. 105th Ill. Vol. Inf. for 3 years, at Dixon. Ill. And was discharged on account of gun shot wounds received at battle of Lost Mountain. At Camp Douglas, Ill., May 16, 1865, first guarded pris- oners at Camp Douglas. After Bragg's retreat from Ky., engaged in all the battles of Sherman's advance from Chattanooga, until wounded. At Resaca my Brigade captured a Miss. Rebel Battery (at point of bayonet) having inscribed on guns, "Presented by Mre. Jefferson Davis."

WILLIAM H. JAMIESON. Born in Washington Co., N. Y. Enlisted as Ist Lt. Co. (. 21st Regt. 1Il. V. I., pro- moted to Capt. April 21, 1862, then to Major Jan. 1, 1865, to Lt. Col. June 8, 1865, received commission of Col but was not mustered. Mustered out Dec. 16, 1865, at San Antonio, Tex. Was at Stone River and was promoted for bravery on the battlefield of Nashville.


JOHN HOWARD STIBBS, Geo, HI. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born March 1, 1840, in Wooster, O. Enlisted April, 1861, as Private in Co. K, 1st Regt. Iowa Vol. Inf. and discharged therefrom as Sgt., Sept. 3, 1861. Re-enlisted Oct. 1861, as Capt. in Co. D. 12th Regt. Iowa Vol. Inf. and was discharged therefrom as Col. and Brevet Brig. Gen. at Washington, D. C., April 30, 1866. Was taken prisoner at Battle of Shiloh Tenn., held about 7 months. Took part in following battles: Battles of Wilson's Creek, Ft. Donelson, Shiloh, siege of Vicksburg, Tupelo, Miss .. Nashville. Was member of the Military Court, in 1865, trying number of im- portant cases, among them that of Henry Wirz, the keeper of Andersonville prison.


STANLEY L. CHAPMAN, Old Glory Post No. 728. Chi- cago. Born April 12, 1844, Westbrook, Conn. En- listed in Co. G, the 14th Conn. Voi, 3rd Prigade, 3r 1 Div., 2nd Army Corps, as Corporal and served in the battles of Anteitam, Fredricksburg, Chancelors- ville and Gettysburg. Was wounded through the right knee in the memorable charge on the Bliss house and barn on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Was taken to the Jarvis General Hospital at Baltimore, Md., and was honorably discharged from the army for disability by reason of wounds, on Jan. 1, 1863,


CHICAGO


JOHN N. FORD, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Orderly Sergeant for Col. Frank A. Haskell 36th Regi- ment Wis. Vol. Infty. Enrolled March 25th, 1864 for 3 years. Mustered out as 1s Lt. and A. D. C. on Brig. Gen. Thos. Eagans staff at Washington, D. C., June 3rd, 1865. Engaged in the following battles, Wilderness, Spottsylvania, North Ann, Totapotomy, Bethesda Church, Turnen Farm, before Petersburg, Hatchers Run, Boydton Road, Fort Stedman and the second battle of Bull Run, Pursuit of Lees Army, Farmville, Saylors Creek, High Bridge, Appotomax, Court House and surrender of Lees Army. Was wounded at battle of Cold Harbor June 1st, '64, and second battle of Hatchers Run. On the 3rd of June took charge of the body of Col. Haskell who was killed that morning, bringing it to his home at Port- age City, Wis., July 28.

SILAS C. POLK, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Enlisted in Co. A. 80th Ind. V. 1. at Princeton, Ind., Aug. 1862. Marched under Buell, and met Gen. Bragg at Perryville, Ky., where he was severely wounded in head, neck and ear and skull fractured. Was on Knox- ville campaign with Sherman to Atlanta, in Schofields 23rd Corps. Was in the slaughter at Resaca. With Thomas at Nashville and Scofield In N. C. Discharged July, 1865, at Indianapolis, Ind.


CHARLES HENRY TEBBETTS, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born in Boston, Mass., Nov. 30, 1840. At At 12 years of age he removed to Illinois and settled on a farm in Lake County. On Sept. 10, 1861, enlisted in Co. F. 37th Regt. Ill. Vol. Inf., and served in the Army of the Frontier, until mustered out in Oct. 1864, was in the battles of Boonville, Sedalia, Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove. In business at Calro, Ill., two years, removed to Chicago in 1867, was in the employ of American Clock Co. until 1871. Then organized the firm of Tebbetts & Garland, in which he continued un- til his death. Jan. 5, 1912. Was Commander of Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Dept. of Ill. G. A. R., in 1893.


PAUL F. A. PUNDT, Custer Post No. 40, Chicago. Born Feb. 9, 1845, Long Island, N. Y. Enlisted May 1, 1861. Private Co. D, 21st Ill. Vol. Inf. Subsequently regiment was assigned to 1st Brigade, 1st Div., 4th Corps, Army of the Cumberland. Participated in Siege of Corinth, Miss. Marched 850 miles from Jacinto in 28 days to reinforce Buell at Louisville, Engaged at Perryville, Crab Orchard. Knob Gap, Stone River, Liberty Gap, Guy's Gap, Chickamauga, and a number of minor en- gagements and skirmishes. Promoted to Corporal shortly after battle of Stone River. Honorably dis- charged Aug. 1, 1864, at expiration of service. After- wards served in the Chicago Fire Dept. 34 years.


WILLIAM J. LIBBERTON, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born at Edinburgh, Scotland, May 31, 1845. Came to America July, 1854. Grew to manhood at Mt. Carroll, Ill. Enlisted May 19, 1864, in Co. G. 134th Ill. Vol. Inf. Discharged in fall of same year. Was with Gen. Rosencranz in the campaign against Gen. Price in Missouri in fall of 1864. Was at one time a Comrade of Warren Post No. 315, Dept. of Ill., G. A. R., and for a number of years connected with Geo. H. Thomas Post, and most of the time Chaplain of the same. At present is Senior Vice Commander of Post No. 5.

WILLIAM NEWTON DANKS, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born at Springfield, Mass., May 16, 1841. His first Military experience was as a member of Col. Elisworth's famous Chicago Zouave Organization, namely the "United States Zouave Cadets." He went with them on the celebrated tour of nearly all the American cities in the year before the war. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was commissioned 2nd Lt. of Co. C, Chicago Zouaves, which went to Spring- field, Ill., but was not accepted. Later was commis- sioned Capt. of Co. H. 44th N. Y. Inf. in which com- pany he served three years. Past Commander Geo. H. Thomas Past No. 5, Chicago, and companion of the military order of the Loyal Legion.

JOHN COOPER DURGIN, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born at Exeter, Wis., Dec. 7, 1844. Enlisted In Co. I, 22nd Wis, Vol. Inf., July 11, 1862, as Ser- geant and was mustered out June 12, 1865, as Adju- tant. The Regiment belonged to 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division of the 20th Armory Corps, Army of the Cumberland.


C. W. BEAM, Geo. HI. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born In Erie County, N. Y., Aug. 18, 1847. Enlisted April 13, 1865, as a private of Co. E, 39th Ill. Vet. Vol. Inf., joining the regiment near Richmond, Va. In July was guarding government property at City Point. Aug. 1. regiment arrived at Norfolk, Va., where it guarded government property and policed that city. I was on duty as orderly at military telegraph office in the Custom House until the regiment started for home in December. Was mustered out with the regiment at Springfield, Ill., Dec. 16, 1865. First joined Gen. Geo. H. Thomas Post, G. A. R., April, 1875.


JOHN R. MCCULLOUGH, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born Dec. 6, 1835, Province Quebec, Canada. Enlisted Aug. 1, 1861, as Hospital Steward, 1st Regt. Wis. Inf. Discharged as Asst. Surgeon at expiration of term of service at Milwaukee, Wis., Oct. 15, 1864. Re-enlisted Feb. 13, 1865, as Acting Asst. Surgeon, U. S. A. Discharged at Nashville, Tenn., Feb. 18. 1866. Taken prisoner at battles of Stone River and Chicka- mauga. Escaped and reached Washington, D. C., Dec., 1863. Wounded at battle of Chaplin Hill (Per- ryville). Served in 1st Div. 14th Army Corps, and was present at following battles: Perryville, Stone River. Dug Gap, Buzzard Roost, Resaca, Runpkin, Vine Creek. Big Shanty, Kenesaw Mountain, Chattahoochie River. Peach Tree Creek, Jonesboro, Atlanta and Nashville. Tenn.

HENRY POHLY, Geo. H. Thomas Post. No. 5, Chicago. Born Oct. 26, 1826, in Germany. Came to U. S. Aug. 20, 1856. Enlisted Sept. 23, 1861, as Priv., Co. I, 65th Regt. N. Y. Vol. Inf. for 3 years. Discharged on ac- count of wounds at Malvern Hill, July 2, 1862. Served in Couch's Div. Keyes Corps, Army of the Potomac. under Gen. Mcclellan, and took part in the following


battles: Fair Oaks, Seven Days' Retreat, Malvern Hill. Through an accident on boat he was transferred to West Phila Hospit., and remained there until he was mustered out and honorably discharged from the service.

CHARLES THOMAS GARRARD, Columbia Post No. 706, Chicago. Born Nov. 9, 1842, at Mantua, O. Enlisted Oct. 5, 1861, as Priv. in Co. H, 7th Regt. Ohio Vol. for three years. Transferred to Co. K, 6th U. S. Cav., Oct. 23, 1862. Re-enlisted as veteran Feb. 10, 1864, as Corp., afterward attaining rank of Sergt, and 1st Sergt. Jan. I, 1865, was appointed Regt. Quarter- master Sergt., and was discharged with said rank by Act of Congress as of Oct. 12, 1865. Took part in following battles: Kernstown, Port Republic, Cedar Mountain and 2nd Bull Run, Va .; Antietam, Md. ; Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Stoneman's Raid and Aldie, Va .; Gettysburg, Pa .; Mine Run, Wilderness. NEWELL S. LORD, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chi- cago. Born July 8, 1841, in Brandon, Vt. Enlisted Oct. 4, 1862, as Priv. In Co. G, 12th Regt., Vermont Vol. Inf., and discharged therefrom as post boy July 14, 1863, at Brattleboro, Vt. The greater part of service was in the Dept. of Washington, stationed at Wolf Run Shoals and Fairfax Court House, under Gen. Heintzelman and in Stannard's Brigade, and was act- ing postmaster for the Brigade, which gave a daily trip to Washington for the mail. The Regt, was at Gettysburg, arriving July 2, and was detailed to guard ammunition and supply trains.

ORETT LYMAN MUNGER, Geo. II. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born at Penn Yan, N. Y., July 7, 1843. En- listed as Priv. in Co. which on Oct. 3, 1862, was mus- tered into U. S. service as Co. C. 44th N. Y. Vol. Inf., known as the People's Ellsworth Regt. Was made 1st Sergt. and later promoted to 2nd Lieut, Ist Lieut. and Capt. Was present and took part with the Regt. in the battles of Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Get- tysburg, Rappahannock Station. Wilderness, Spottsyl- vania, Cold Harbor, Bethesda Church, siege of Peters- burg and Peebles Farm, besides other smaller affairs. Was honorably mustered out Oct. 3. 1864. Resides in Chicago, which city has been, his home since 1881.

Discharged at close of war, at Cleveland, O, Served in 2nd Brig., 2nd Div., 23rd Army Corps, Army of the Cumberland and engaged in the following battles and campaigns: Kentucky campalgn, including pursuit of Gen. Morgan In Ohio: Burnside campaign over Cum- berland Mountains; taking of Cumberland Gap; siege of Knoxville, Buzzard Roost, Rockyface Ridge, Resaca, Cassville, New Hope Church, Dallas, Allatoona, Ken- esaw Mt .. Marietta, Chattahoochle River, Decatur, At. lanta and Nashville, rejoining his Regt. at Goldsboro, N. C., at Salisbury and then to Cleveland for muster out.


WASHINGTON PORTER, Gen. II. Thomas Post No. 5. Chicago. Born Boone Co., Ill., Oct. 26, 1843. Enlisted at Belvidere, Ill., Aug. 15, 1862, in the 95th Ill, Regt., Co. B. and served until May 16, 1865, when he was discharged at Memphis, Tenn., by reason of gun shot wound received at the battle of Gunntown, Miss., June 10. 1864. Served under Gen. Grant and was in various skirmishes. Served through the siege of Vicksburg and marched in with the troops on July 4, 1863, Was also on the Red River expedition, and upon return to Memphis, Tenn., went out with Regt .. where they fought the battle of Gunntown, June 10. 1864. Was in hospital about three months, by reason of gun shot wound through left shoulder. Was then placed on detached service at the Overton Hospital, Memphis, Tenn., up to the time he was discharged, May 1ยบ, 1865. Served as a Priv.


HENRY WALBRIDGE DUDLEY, Geo. H. Thomas l'ost No. 5, Chicago. Born March 28, 1840, at Grand Rapids, Mich. Enlisted Sept. 1, 1861 In Co. B., 1st Regt. Il1. Light Artillery. (Taylors Battery. ) from Chicago, Ill. Took part in Battles, Fredricktown, Mo., Belniont, Mo .. Fort Donelson, Tenn., Shiloh, Tenn., Chickesaw, Bayou, Miss., Arkansas Post, Ark., and Slege of Vicksburg On Dec. 21, 1862. By special orders No. 35 from Genl. W. T. Sherman was detalled for service In the Ord- nance Dept., and so continued until Sept. 8, 1664, when mustered out of service at Springfield, Ill.

EUGENE K. FASSETT, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chi- cago. Born Dec. 19, 1845, in Delta, O. Enlisted July 4, 1862, as private in Co. G. 85th Regt. Ohio Vol. for the period of three months. Discharged as Priv. by reason of expiration of service at Columbus, O., Sept. 23, 1862. Re-enlisted Feb. 29, 1864, as Private in Co. B, 2nd Regt. (Berdans) U. S. Sharpshooter Vol. for three years. Co. B, of 2nd U. S. Sharpshooters consolidated with the 5th Mich. Vol. Inf. in winter or spring of 1864-65. ) Was discharged as Priv. at expiration of service at Jeffersonville, Ind., July 5, 1865. Served in the 3rd Div., 2nd Army Corps, and took part in the following battles: Wilderness, Spottsylvania, Drury's Bluffs, Salem Church, Col dHarbor, Piedmont, Petersburg Siege, Wei- don - R. R., Hatcher's Run, Fort Sedgwick, Fort Stead- man, Boydton Plank Road, Dinwiddie C. H., Five Forks, Fall of Petersburg, Fall of Richmond, High Bridge, Farmville, Capture of Gen. Robert E. Lee's army.


ALEX A. FICKES, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born April 12, 1841, in Pennsylvania. Enlisted July 17, 1861, as Private in Co. H, 7th Ill. Vol. Re-enlisted Dec. 22, 1863, as a veteran, and discharged, holding rank of Commissary Sergeant, at Louisville, Ky., July 9, 1865. Served in 4th Div. 15th Army Corps, and took part in following battles: Fort Henry, Fort Donelson, Shiloh, 1st and 2nd battles if Corinth, Miss., Resaca, Allatoona Pass, Sherman's March to the Sea, and Ben- tonville.


JOHN T. HANNA, Post No. 5. Born Nov. 16, 1838, in Wayne County, Ohio. Enlisted Sept. 20. 1861, as Ser- geant, Co. G. Eighth Iowa Volunteer Infty., promoted to First Sergeant. Re-enlisted Jan. 1st, 1864, as a veteran. Commissioner First Lieut. Seventy-first U. S. Col. Vols., on staff of Gen. A. J. Smith, Red River Expedition. Quartermaster of Engineers on Gen. Bray- man's staff: Provost Marshal, South West, Miss., at Winchester and Fort Gibson, Miss., discharged March 26, 1866. In following battles and campaigns. Shiloh. taken prisoner with regiment in "Hornet's nest." After being at various places, escaped at Macon, Ga. (being naked). Recaptured at Abbeyville Ferry, Ga., sent to Libby Prison, paroled and rejoined his regiment Feb. 1863. Battle of Raymond, Jackson, Siege of Vicks- burg and its capture, 2nd Jackson, Miss., battle, Fort de Rusa, Sabine Cross Roads.


JOHN C. KILGORE, Geo. H. Thomas Post No. 5, Chicago. Born Aug. 16, 1843, at Washington, Ia. Enlisted Aug. 22, 1862, as Priv. Co. A, 25th Regt. Ia. Inf., for three years, and was discharged at close of war, at Washing- ton, D. C., June 6, 1865. Served in 1st Div. 15 A. C., and took part in following battles and campaigns: Sherman's attack on Vicksburg, Arkansas Post, assault and siege of Vicksburg. Jackson, Canton, Cherokee Station, Look- out Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Ringgold and Taylor's Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, Kenesaw Mountain, Pine Mountain, Nickajack. Chattahoochee River, At- lanta, and siege of Atlanta, Jonesboro, Nashville. With Scofield corps to Beaufort, N. C., Kingston, Golds- borough, March to Washington via Richmond, on Grand Review and later discharged.
