COMPANY E, 8TH INFANTRY.
Penel West was a member of the Sth Regiment band and was mus- tered out in March, 1862; re-entered service in Company F, 124th Infan- try.
The regiment left Indianapolis for St, Louis by rail on the 10th of September, 1861, and on arriving at that point joined the army of Major General John C. Fremont, which he was collecting in eastern Missouri.
During the remainder of the year the regiment did considerable marching. and was at different points in the State.
On the 7th of December the regiment marched to Warrensburg, Mo., and after some skirmishing assisted in capturing thirteen hundred Rebels who were on their way to join the army of General Price in southern Missouri.
Returning to Otterville, it went into camp and remained there during the balance of the year.
The changes and casualties in Company E in the campaigns of 1861 were as follows:
Captain Fred Tykle resigned October 22, and Lieutenant Elwood was promoted Captain, his commission dating from the 23d. Sergeant Henry Rader was promoted Ist Lieutenant at the same date.

On the 24th of January the regiment left Otterville for Springfield and joined the army under General Samuel R. Curtis, and with the command moved to Cross Timbers, Ark., and on the 6th, 7th and Sth of March oc- curred the great battle of Pea Ridge. Only the left wing of the Sth was called into action; Company E belonged to the right wing and was not engaged.
After this battle the regiment remained in camp at Gross Timbers for some time, and then put in the remainder of the year in marching and 'countermarching through Missouri and Arkansas. On the 7th of July the regiment was in the engagement at Cotton Plant, Ark., and at Austin, Miss., August 2, and at the close of the year was again in Missouri.

COMPANY E, STH INFANTRY.
1863.
On the 5th of March the regiment embarked at St. Genevieve, Mo., and steamed to Millikan's Bend, La., and there became part of the army organizing under General Grant and destined for operations against Vicksburg; the regiment lay in camp here until the latter part of April, when it marched through an almost impassable swamp to Richmond, La, and was one of the first regiments to cross the Mississippi River at Bru- insburg, below Vicksburg.
Here began the active campaign against Vicksburg; the battles of Port Gibson, Jackson, Champion Hill and Black River followed each other in rapid succession, resulting in shutting Pemberton up behind the trenches at Vicksburg, to which Grant laid siege and in which Company E bore its full part, being under the enemy's fire the 47 days between the invest- ment and the surrender, and also forming part of the assaulting column in the disastrous charge of May 22, and its roll of dead and wounded testify to the bravery of the men composing the organization.
The casualties from May I to July 4 were as follows:
Killed and Mortally Wounded-Sergeants George W. Rader and James A. Brown, Corporal Joseph B. Gossett and Privates William T. Beck, John J. Carter, Henry Good and Andrew J. Phillips.
Wounded-Sergeant Cyrus Van Mater and Privates George W. Bar- rett, Daniel Rent and James L Moore.
After the surrender the regiment assisted in driving Johnston from Jackson, and returning to Vicksburg, remained there until the 20th of August, when it left for Carrollton, La., and from there accompanied an expedition under General Banks through the Teche country. On the 12th of November the regiment embarked at Berwick City for Texas, and on the 17th took part in the capture of a fort on Mustang Island, near Aran- sas Pass, and on the 27th assisted in the taking of Fort Esperanza, after which it marched to Indianola, where it remained until the close of the year, having had the fellowing casualties since the ist of January:
Killed -- Sergeants George W. Rader and James A. Brown, Corporal Joseph B. Gossett and Privates William T. Beck, John J. Carter, Henry Good and Andrew J. Phillips.
Drowned-Corporal William Trout, at St. Louis, Mo , July 17.

The regiment remained at Indianola until April, when the men were given the thirty days furlough accorded to veterans and arrived at Indi- anapolis on the 22d.
The non-veterans and recruits were transferred to Company H, 69th Infantry, during the absence of the veterans, and served with that organ- ization on the disastrous Red River expedition under General Banks. No casualties were reported in the detachment and it is presumed there were none.
Lieutenant John R. Pierce resigned his commission on the 23d of Feb- ruary and Lieutenant Mitchell on the 2Sth. Sergeant Cyrus Van Mater was promoted Ist Lieutenant, his commission dating February 24.
On the return of the veterans after the expiration of their leave of ab- sence, the non-veterans joined them at New Orleans, and from there the Sth accompanied an expedition to Atchafalaya via Morganza Bend. After a sharp engagement the regiment returned to Morganza Bend, and en- barking on an ocean steamer sailed for Washington, D. C., arriving there on the 12th of August. It proceeded to Berryville, Va., where it was as- signed to the 19th Corps, participating with it in the campaign of Sheri- dan in the valley of Virginia. On the 4th of September the non-veterans were mustered out, their term of service having expired.
On the 19th of September the Sth was engaged in the battle of Ope- quan, or Winchester, and Company E lost Benjamin F. Bock killed and William Gossett wounded.
On the 22d the regiment was in the battle of Fisher's Hill, but Com- pany E suffered no loss in the engagement.
The command then moved forward and encamped at Cedar Creek, . where, on the morning of the 19th of October the Confederates under Early attacked and surprised Sheridan's forces, then temporarily com- manded by General Wright, while still in their tents or gathered around the camp fires. Company E, with the regiment, became engaged early in the action. While assisting to form the company, just at daylight, Lieu- tenant Van Mater was struck in the face with a musket ball and so se- verely wounded that he was borne from the field by his comrades for. dead, and was carried by them some two miles before recovering suffi- ciently to show that life remained.
So impetuous was the attack of the enemy and so complete the sur- prise that they drove everything before them, and the Federals were hurled from the field in confusion, leaving their tents, camp equipage and many pieces of artillery in the hands of the exultant Confederates. After a running fight of several miles the tide of battle suddenly turned and soon Early's forces were fleeing back over the ground their victory of the morning had gained them, and at evening Sheridan's men encamped in
33

their bivouacs of the previous night, having retaken all the guns lost in the morning, as well as a number belonging to the enemy.
It was during the progress of this battle that the famous historical "Sheridan's . Ride" occurred, which that grand American poet, Thomas B. Read, has immortalized in verse. Whether the presence of Sheridan was the cause of the sudden change in the tide of battle, or whether some other officers who will never be known to fame succeeded in restoring order and making the gallant stand which turned the enemy's confidence into confusion, it is not the intention of this sketch to discuss, further than to say that this glorious victory, let it be ascribed to whom it may, forever ended the control of the beautiful and fertile valley of the Shenandoah by the Confederates. Early's command was so broken up by the disaster of that day that it was never heard of afterward as an organization.
In the battle of the 19th Company E lost Sergeant James W. Alexan- der killed, Lieutenant Cyrus Van Mater and Private William Webb wounded, and James M. Windsor captured, and who died a few months later in a rebel prison.
The 8th remained in the valley until January, 1865, when it was or- dered to Georgia.
The losses and changes in the company during the year were as fol- lows:
Ist Lieutenant John R. Pierce resigned February 23 2d Lieutenant Samuel Mitchell resigned February 28; Ist Sergeant Cyrus Van Mater promoted Ist Lieutenant February 24 and resigned December 4, on ac- count of disability from wounds; Ist Sergeant George W. Tarkleson pro- inoted Ist Lieutenant December 15; Captain Benjamin F. Elwood mus- tered out November IS, term expired.
Killed-Sergeant James W. Alexander and Benjamin F. Bock.
Died-Samuel E. Gustin
Discharged-John D. Hodson, Avery Jester, Cyrus Wann and Zach- ariah Windsor.
Non-veterans mustered out, term expired-Sergeant Collins T. Bed- ford, Corporals Samuel C. Miller, Wilson Nelson, James Williams and Alfred Painter, Privates William S. Bedford, John Bock, William A. IS65.
The regiment left the valley on the 6th of January and arrived at Sa- vannah. Ga., by steamer from Baltimore on the 16th. On the Ist day of January George W. Tarkleson was commissioned Captain, and on the 19th of July Sergeant William Perry was commissioned Ist Lieutenant and Sergeant Levi P. Shoemaker 2d Lieutenant, but none of the three were mustered on their commissions during the war. The regiment remained on duty in Georgia until the 28th of August, when it was mustered out and arrived at Indianapolis on the 17th of September, with six non-com- missioned officers and twenty-four privates, and was discharged at that point after more than four years of toils and hardships amid the perils of

COMPANIES G, 17TH AND 47TH, AND ISTH INFANTRIES.
COMPARY G, 17TH INFANTRY, [Three Years Service.]
This company was recruited principally in Madison county, early in IS61. In the original organization there were no members from Fall Creek township or vicinity, but in March, 1864, when the regiment came to Indiana on veteran furlough, John Burr, David Stewart and Joseph A. Swope enlisted and served with the regiment in Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, participating in the battles of Pumpkinvine Creek, Big Shanty, Belle Plain Road. Kenesaw, Marietta, Chattahoochee River, Stone Mountain, Flat Rock, New Hope Church, Rome, Coosaville, Lees- burgh, Goshen, Ebenezer Church, Selma and Macon. In one of these engagements Joseph A. Swope was severely wounded, and at the battle of Ebenezer Church David Stewart was badly injured by his horse fall- ing on him while participating in a charge in which his horse was killed; both, after recovering, returned to the company and were mustered out with it on the Sth of August, 1865. John Burr died at Evansville, Ind., December 6, 1864, and is buried at Middletown.
