COMPANY H, 69TH INFANTRY.

At the time the 69th went into camp the Confederate army under General Bragg was invading Kentucky, and one column under General Kirby Smith, in advance of the main force, was advancing toward Cin- cinnati, and great fears were entertained throughout the Northwest that he would succeed in reaching and destroying it, as at that time there were but few troops in Kentucky.

For the purpose of checking Smith's progress all the troops then or- ganizing in Indiana and Ohio were hurried forward.

The 69th was one of the regiments sent forward. It had only been in camp a few days, was unorganized. entirely without drill or discipline, but few of its members had seen service, yet the regiment was fully as well prepared for battle as any other organization that went into the en- gagement of August 30.

The 69th left Camp Wayne for Kentucky on the 20th of August, and on reaching Lexington, moved with the other forces assembled there in the direction of Richmond. Near that place, on the 29th, some skirmish- ing occurred, and on the 30th a disastrous battle was fought, resulting in the complete rout and capture of the Union forces. The Federals fought bravely considering their raw condition, but they were no match for the disciplined troops of Smith; and their lines were soon broken and the men scattered so that it was impossible to rally any considerable number, and the Confederates pushing their advantage with vigor, soon had pos- session of the field and most of the army, but few escaping.

Company H lost two killed, seventeen wounded and at least fifty cap- tured. Following is the list of killed and wounded as far as can be ob- tained:

Killed-William B. Henshaw and Robert V. Price.

Wounded-Ist Sergeant John R. Elliott, Corporal Samuel Hardin, Privates Isaac Alger, James M. Bock, Benjamin W. Bristol, Adam H. Cline, Patrick Cain, John W. Davis, Jesse S. Ellison, David Franklin, Amos R. Gustin, William B. Hankins, George W. Morgan, Noah W. Warner and three others whose names cannot now be obtained.

Soon after the battle the men were released on parole and returned to . Indiana, and again went into camp at Richmond, and after being ex- changed, were sent to Indianapolis and from there to Memphis, Tenn., on the 27th of November. On the 20th the regiment went down the Mississippi River on transports, and on the 29th of December was in the assault on Chicasaw Bluff's, on the Yazoo River. The company sustained no loss in this engagement. This closed the campaign of IS62, and the casualties for the year were:

Killed-William B. Henshaw and Robert V. Price.

Died-Rufus Perdue.

Discharged-Corporals Samuel Hardin and Michael Davis, Privates Isaac Alger, Patrick Cain, James Graham, William B. Hankins and Wil- liam H. Yount.

1863.

After the repulse at Chicasaw Bluffs the 69th went with the expedi- tion up the Arkansas River and joined in the attack and capture of Ar- kansas Post, on the 11th of January. During this voyage Peter C. Strick -

ler of Company H. was caught in the machinery of the boat and so crushed that he died the succeeding day, January 7, from the injuries received.

Returning to the Mississippi River, the 69th encamped at Young's Point, La. At this place and Millikan's Bend the camps were located in the low, marshy bottoms, and much sickness prevailed among the troops. By reference to the roster of Company H it will be seen that a great num- ber of its members died while at this place, or at other points from disease contracted here.

In the latter part of February the 69th moved their camp to Millikan's Bend, and remained there until the 3oth of March, when it marched as the advance of Grant's army in the movement against Vicksburg, and in the afternoon of that day had a sharp skirmish at Roundaway Bayou, op- posite Richmond, La. Crossing over to Richmond in boats, the regiment assisted in building bridges across the bayou for the passage of the entire army; on the 30th of April the crossing was effected and the army moved toward Port Gibson, where on the next day a severe battle was fought in which the 69th was engaged, Company H losing Augustus L. Sayford, killed.

On the 16th of May the hard-fought battle of Champion Hill occurred, in which Company H had John W. Fountain, Amos R. Gustin and Joseph Graves wounded, the two former mortally, both dying in a few days thereafter.

On the next day the regiment took part in the battle at Black River, in which Company H sustained no loss.

The brilliant victories of Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Jackson, Black River and other adjacent points penned the Confederates up in the works around Vicksburg, and the Union army took position in front of the works and in the rear of the city, preparatory to an assault on the fortifications, which was made on the 22d of May with disastrous results to Grant's forces. The 69th formed part of the assailants, and on the 23d went with its division (Osterhaus') to Black River, where it remained during the s ege, holding the Confederate General Johnston in check, who, with an army hastily gathered, was making demonstrations on the Union rear ' from the direction of Jackson.

Vicksburg was surrendered on the 4th of July, and on the 6th the 69th started with Sherman's forces to drive Johnston from Jackson, which was accomplished after a six days' siege, and in which Thomas J. Graves of Company H, was killed.

After this the regiment returned to Vicksburg, and on the 3d of Aug- ust went with the 13th Corps to Port Hudson, and was shortly afterward transferred to the Department of the Gulf and sent to New Orleans.

In September it moved to Berwick City, and there joined General Franklin's Teche expedition, and on its return was sent to Algiers, reach- ing there in November. The regiment then embarked in a steamship for Texas, as part of General Banks' coasting expedition, landing at De Crow's Point, Matagorda Bay, on the Ist of December, where it encamped the remainder of the year, having sustained the following changes and casualties during 1863:

Captain Frederick Hoover resigned January 22; 2d Lieutenant Hiram

In February the 69th left Matagorda Bay and sailed for Indianola, and on the 13th of March went to Matagorda Island, where it remained until April, when it was ordered to New Orleans, and from there to Alexan- dria, La., to reinforce General Banks, arriving there on the 27th of April, where it met Banks in full retreat toward the Mississippi River, in which the 69th supported the cavalry that guarded the rear. Samuel J. Johnston was wounded during this expedition.

The regiment then went into camp at Morganza until the 7th of De- .cember. when it was sent to Dauphin Island, Mobile Bay, and on the 14th joined General Granger's Pascagoula expedition, a movement towards Mobile intended to divert the attention of the enemy from other columns moving through the country. In this expedition the regiment moved to Grand Bay, within twenty miles of Mobile. On the Ist of January the regiment returned to Pascagoula.

The following changes occurred in Company H in 1864:

2d Lieutenant Charles C. Shedron promoted Ist Lieutenant ( not mus- tered ).

Discharged-Joseph Grove.

Transferred-William R. Alexander,. Nicholas B. Ginn, Hugh A. Murphy and John Sharp.

ern Alabama to the rear of Mobile and arrived at Fort Blakely on the Ist of April, and was engaged in the assault on that work on the 9th. After the surrender it guarded prisoners at Ship Island, and returning to Blakely, it moved with the division to Selma. Ala., where it was stationed until May, and then moved to Mobile en route for Texas, On reaching Mobile the orders for Texas were countermanded and the regiment was assigned to duty in that city.

On the 5th of July the regiment was mustered out and arrived at In- dianapolis on the ISth, where the men were discharged. The 69th was an efficient organization, and its roll of hard-fought battles, given below, in which it distinguished itself, attest to the bravery of the men composing it.
