MORGAN'S RAID.

This was an invasion of Indiana by the Confederates under General John Morgan, who, with a force of cavalry and mounted infantry num- bering about 6,000 men, crossed the Ohio River at Brandensburg, Ky., and marched east across the southern part of the State into Ohio.

The "Raid" occurred in July, 1863, when the wheat harvest of the State was at its height, and hands for taking care of and saving the grain were hard to obtain and wages high. Yet, within twenty-four hours after the Governor had called upon the people to drive out the invaders, 60,000 men had offered their services.

While no regularly enlisted volunteers from Fall Creek township or vicinity served during the raid, it is but justice to the farmer who left his harvest field, the merchant who closed his store, the mechanic and laborer who left profitable employment and hastened to defend the State against the invaders, to give their services a notice in this sketch.

There had been, up to within a few days of the invasion, some regu- larly organized troops in the State, but when Morgan marched into Ken- tucky they were all called for and sent there. After he had successfully eluded all troops sent to head him off and suddenly appeared north of the Ohio River, the authority in command in Kentucky could not or would not return them to the assistance of the State, though urgently appealed to'time and again by Governor Morton. Receiving no outside help, the Governor called upon the people, and they responded in overwhelming numbers.

While but few of the regiments enlisted by the State aided directly in expelling the Confederates, yet had they failed to respond promptly to the call, who can tell the amount of damage that might have been done the people and cities of southern Indiana, and perhaps Indianapolis and eastern Indiana might have felt the effects of a hostile march.

Two companies were raised in Fall Creek township and vicinity, one at Mechanicsburg. the other at Middletown.

The roster of each is given entire.

These troops were mustered into the service of the State on the 10th of July, for no definite period of time, but were to serve until the emer- gency for which they enlisted was past.

The 105th Regiment was immediately sent to southern Indiana, where

66

COMPANY F, 124TH INFANTRY.

it remained until the end of the raid. After Morgan had passed into Ohio a false alarm was raised that he was returning and marching on Law- renceburg, where the 105th was then encamped. The regiment started out to meet him, and in taking position two portions of the regiment, each mistaking the other for the enemy, began firing, and before the mistake was discovered the regiment lost eight killed and twenty wounded. Com- pany K sustained no loss.

On the ISth of July the regiment returned to Indianapolis and was mustered out.

109TH.

This regiment was retained at Indianapolis until the 13th of July, when the services of a brigade of three regiments was tendered the Gov- ernor of Ohio and accepted, and the 109th was one of the regiments se- lected, and the brigade was ordered to be ready to embark and move at 5 o'clock p. m. The object was to push this brigade down the Cincin- nati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad and intercept Morgan at Hamilton or Glendale, at one of which places it was expected he would cross and de- stroy the road.

Owing to the fact that the brigade commander got drunk and no one else was assigned to the command, the troops did not get off until 2 o'clock next morning.

When the brigade arrived at Hamilton, just after daylight on the 14th. Morgan had just crossed at Glendale, about ten miles below, but in such haste as to leave both the railroad and telegraph unharmed.

In the afternoon the command was sent to Cincinnati, where it re- mained until the morning of the 17th, when it left for Indianapolis and was mustered out on the 18th.
