Company F went into camp at Richmond, where the regiment was mustered into the service of the United States, on the 10th of March, IS64. On the 19th of the same month it left Indianapolis for Louisville, Ky., arriving there the same day, and from there it moved to Nashville, Tenn., reaching that point on the 24th. There the regiment was assigned to the 23d Corps. April 5 the 124th left Nashville for the front, and marched to Athens, Tenn., and early in May left Athens and marched with its corps toward Atlanta, against which General Sherman was then operating, and arrived in front of Buzzard's Roost on the Sth. From this time on until the fall of Atlanta the 124th was continually engaged in building works, skirmishing and taking an active part in the many hard- fought battles that occurred around that stronghold of the enemy.
After the evacuation of Atlanta the 124th went into camp at Decatur About the Ist of October General Hood, with the Confederate army under his command, moved north and threatened Sherman's line of communica- tion, and on the 4th the troops intended to operate with Thomas, including the 124th, marched in pursuit, which was continued to Gavlesville. Ala., where it was abandoned and the command moved to Cedar Bluff's and Dalton, and from there by rail to Nashville, reaching there on the 9th of

November, and on the 10th went to Thompson's Station and then to Pu- laski, arriving there on the 5th.
General Hood was now rapidly advancing and threatening Nashville, and General Scoffield, commanding the 23d Corps, commenced falling back toward Columbia, reaching there on the 23d. The retreat was con- tinued, with much skirmishing and quite an engagement at Spring Hill, to Franklin, where a stand was made, and on the 30th the battle at that place was fought. Works were constructed by the Federals, upon which the enemy hurled his forces repeatedly but without effect, being each time repulsed with terrible loss. Under cover of night the Union army crossed the Harpeth River and fell back to Nashville.
Lieutenant Amos Groenendyke, while leading his company in this battle, was mortally wounded, dying at Nashville on the 27th of Decem- ber following. On the 15th and 16th the 124th was engaged in the battle of Nashville, and joined in the pursuit of Hood as far as Columbia, where it encamped during the balance of the year.

C., by rail, reaching there on the 30th, and again em- barking, sailed to Moorehead City, N. C., at which place it landed on the 27th of February, and the next day it marched to Newbern.
On the 6th of March the 124th moved with the column of General Scoffield along the railroad toward Kingston. On the Sth the enemy was encountered in force in a strong position at Wise's Forks, and a severe battle was fought, lasting until the evening of the 9th, when the enemy was repulsed after great loss. After the battle the 124th marched to Kingston and from there to Goldsboro, where a junction was formed with the army of General Sherman, which had marched from "Atlanta to the Sea" and from the sea through the "Old North State," halting only long enough to greet their old comrades of the 23d Corps before pushing on to final victory.
The 124th was stationed during the summer at Lenoir Institute, Greensboro, Charlotte and again at Greensboro, where it was mustered out, on the 31st of August.
