Andrew McCormack and Harrison Jackson were captured during Hood's operations in Tennessee, in the fall of 1864, and confined in Andersonville prison until the general exchange in the spring of 1865, when they were released.
The 9th left Indianapolis on the 3d day of May for Nashville, Tenn., and from there to Pulaski, Tenn., where it did garrison duty until the 23d of November. During this time the regiment had not been mounted and had served as infantry.
On the 25th of September a portion of the regiment had a severe en- gagement with the Confederates at Sulphur Branch Trestle, Ala., losing heavily. No record appears of Company E having been engaged in this affair.
At the opening of the Hood campaign the regiment fell back from Pulaski to Nashville, and was mounted and sent to the front. On the 17th of December it participated in the second battle of the Hood campaign at Franklin, Tenn., in which Company E lost its captain, Volney Hobson, of New Castle, and Benjamin F. Ricks, of Cadiz, killed.
After Hood's defeat the regiment went into camp at Gravelly Springs, where it remained during the year, having sustained the following losses in 1864:
Killed -- Captain Volney Hobson and Benjamin F. Ricks.
