colored population numbered 268, 173 in 1890; of whom 268,071 are of African descent, a decrease since ISSo of 3,380. To what causes this decrease may rightfully be attributed, we have not the information to deter- mine. It may be of interest to note in comparison, that Massachusetts has a population of 2, 238,943, of whom 1,087,709 are males, and 1, 157, 234 are females ; an excess of 63, 525 females; 1,581,806 are native, and 657, - 137 are foreign born.
