Sold to Robert Gray ten acres of upland near his house not prejudicing any high way, he paying to the Towne within a twelvemonth ten pounds, the one half wheat the other half Indian Corne.

Graunted to Goodman Barker Senr: a parcell of swamp Land on the North side of bear hill and soe towards mr: ffaulkners meadowe, for as much as it will a- mount to towards his meadowe he lost at Beechen meadowe.


Graunted libertie to Samuell Phelps to exchange six acres of upland to take it from the west end of his lot, and to lay it on the south side of his house, William Johnson & John Chandler to lay it out.


Sold to Joseph Steevens about a quarter of an acre of upland between his land and the cart way leading to William Chandlers he paying within a twelve- month for it after the rate of thirty shillings per acre the one half wheat the other half Indian Corne.


Sold to the widowe Abbott a gore of land between the Land of William Blunt, and the land of Edward Whittington, she paying within a twelve month after the rate of thirty shillings an acre, the one half wheat the other half Indian Corne, or twentie shillings in money.


Graunted libertie to James ffrie to improve five acres of the personage land beyond the land of Nathaniell Deane, for seaven years from the first of September next, and at the end of seaven years, to leave it well and suf- fitiently sowen wth English hay seed, and alsoe to leave it in broad lands; and not in Indian hills


Sold to francis ffaulkner a parcell of land lying on the west side of Shawshin River and on the North side of way going over the foord, and soe up to his meadowe he paying within twelve month, to the Towne after the rate of thirty shillings an acre, the half wheat the other half Indian Corne, or twenty shillings an acre in money.


Sold to William Ballard Senr: a parcell of upland lying by the east side of his orchard, a rod wide and twenty rods long he paying to the Towne after the rate of thirty shillings an acre, the one half wheat the other half Indian Corne, or twenty shillings an acre in money.

Sold to Stephen Parker an acre of Land on the east side of the swamp by his house, betwixt that and the west end of the ware hill, prejudicing noe high way, he paying to the towne by this time twelve month either thirty shillings in Indian Corne & wheat in equall proportion or twenty shillings in money.


Voted & passed that a Committe be chosen and impowred to take notice of what meadowes was layd out joyning upon swamps, and to state the sd bounds as near to sd swamps as can be imagined, their bounds was ever intended, and rather to intrench upon the Towne then upon any mans propertie.


Capt: Bradstreet Left: Osgood, Ensigne Chandler, Good: Poor, Richard Barker Senr: John Lovejoy Nathan Parker, Thomas Johnson, are chosen a Committe to act as abovesd, & their returne, to be accounted authentike, notwithstand any imperfect entry of meadowes as above circumstanced, and the sd bounds which sd Committe returne to be accounted the proper bounds.


Voted and passed, that whereas Mr: Barnard made propositions to the Towne this meeting, for a four acre lott &c: the Towne have agreed, as abovesd to take it into their Consideration, tell the next Towne meeting, and then to returne a full answere.


Att a meeting of the Towne the 5th of March 1682/3 according to Towne orde: Left: Jno: Osgood was chosen moderatr: for this meeting.


It was vated and passed that, the South end of the Towne provide bulls for them- selves at their owne charge, and for the North part of the Towne to doe the like.


Capt: Bradstreet was chosen to goe to Ipswich the first day of Ipswich Court there to Consult with, & hear what the Gentlemen of the several Townes betwixt Naumbeage & Memonake, that are to meet there about Mr: Masons claime, have to offer for the good of sd severall Tomes, & soe to make report to the Towne.


Whereas the lot layers through a mistake layd out to Goodman Ballard Senr: two acres of Land more then his due, in those percells of land near his house, the Towne hath given him libertie, to enjoy it, for which end he hath throwen up to the Towne, a percell of broken up land of about two acres & a quarter in Shawshin feild, adjoyning to the land which, was formerly John Lovejoys Senr:


Graunted libertie to Ensigne Chandler to change a part of his great Division which joynes to Little hope meadowe, and lay soe much on the westerly side of his sd Division, the lotlayers measuring exactly (?) the quantity layd downe, & taken up as abovesd

Given & graunted to Joshua Woodman (in Consideration of his loss he sustained c; the Indians) six acres of land on the North east side of a peice of meadowe of Goodman Phelps; and the south end of Ensigne Chandlers Land he had of John Russ, provided it prejudice noe high way to any man's propietir, as Goodman Poor shall judge being to be one of the lotlayers to lay it out.


Graunted libertie to Samuell Blanchard to take up as much swamp Land on the southeast end of his meadowe, as to make up his last division of meadowe not exceed- ing the towne ordc: about swamp land, laid out for meadowe.


According to a vote passed the last towne meeting about Mr. Barnards propositions made to the towne, it was put to vote whether the towne or any of them did thinke they were in a Capacity to answere Mr: Barnards requests, which they by this vote declared they were not.


Voted and passed that, the towne shall pay for Mr: Barnards diet soe long as he remaines a single man in the tome, the Towne in the mean time paying of him noe wood & the tome to have the use of the Lott & meadowe in the mean time.


Voted & passed that five pounds of Mr: Deans sallery shall be payd in silver during his abode, in the ministrie.


Voted that Thomas Johnson shall have libertie to take as much swamp land, on the North end of ensig(ne) Chandlers Lot as shall make up that parcell of meadowe graunted to him this time twelve month, as much as Good: Poor tooke from him at the pond meadowe, not exceeding the tome ordc: about swamp Land.


Graunted libertie to James ffrie to stake up the five acres of land graunted him this time twelvemonth, out of the Parsonage Land, to take it on the North side of Musketo River & betwixt the Millers meadowe, & the Wades meadowe way, to have the sd land upon the termes he had the other begining at the same time.


Sold to John Aslett a percell of land at the lower end of his Lott, in noe measure prejudicing the high way that way, & Good: Marstone, & Serjnt: Barker are to measure the same & to sett the bounds of it, and the sd Aslett to pay after the rate of twenty five shillings an acre in money.


Sold to Abraham Graves an a(c)re of land on the southerly end of his fathers land, he paying to the towne twenty shillings in money or thirty shillings in pay: (sic)


Graunted to Joseph Ballard libertie, to improve six acres of land for seaven years, on the south side of William Chandlers brooke running through his meadowe, and at the end of seaven years to sowe it sufficiently with English hay seed, and to leave it in broad lands, the seven years to begin the first of Septembe: next.


Att a Lawfull Towne meeting the 7th of January 1683 Capt John Osgood was chosen moderatr: for this meeting


Christopher Osgood, Steeven Osgood, Serjnt: Barker, John Narston senr: Daniell Poor senr: are chosen select men for the year ensuing.

Voted and passed that from this time forward att the towne meeting when Con- stables are to be Chosen, that two shall be nominated by the Constables the last year for each end of the towne, & he of those two that have the most votes, shall serve as Constable for the year ensuing.


William Barker was chosen, Constable for the North end of the towne for the year ensuing.


Left: Chandler is chosen Constable for the South end of the towne for the year ensuing.


John ffarnum is chosen Grandjurie man for the year ensuing.


Voted and passed that whereas Joseph Steevens was chosen by the select men the last year to sit among the boys & keep orde; among them in the meeting house on the Sabbath Day he having refused, he is hereby ordered to sit among them for three months to Come or pay twenty shillings to the use of the Towne, to be dis- trained by the Constable and all persons to be choosen by the select men for the service abovesd, for the future & refusing, must expect the same penalty, & the Select men from year to year are to see meet persons Chosen, & upon default of the persons soe chose to issue out their warrants for the gathering the sd penaltie according to this orde:


Voted and passed that all persons shall bring in a list of their rateable estate the Last munday in Aurgust at 8 of the clock from year to year there to be examined in the publicke meeting, and whoever shall keep back any part of their rateable estate shall forfeit five shillings for every perticular to the use of the Towne according to a former orde: & whosoever shall not then bring in their bills as abovesd shall be rated by will & double unless they be providentially hindered & for it appear to the Select men.


Voted & passed that for the future all pasture Land & meadowe ground shall pay after the rate of a half penny an acre as it hath been layd out by the Lott- layers to the ministers rate and att Tome charges:


Graunted libertie to George Abbott Senr: to change an acre or thereabouts of . his Land by Ensigne Steevenses, on the north side of sd. Land & lay it on the South side, of sd: Land & Ensigne Steevens & Corpll: Nathan Steevens are the men appointed to Lay it out.


Sold to Richard Barker junr: a frogg pond lying against his house & soe to joyne to his house provided he make a way on the south side of it to the satis- faction of the neighbourhood, he paying to the Towne for it after the rate of 30d (?} per acre, & Joseph Robinson & Alexande: Sessions are appointed to lay it out. * (probably shillings abbreviated)

Graunted libertie to Henery Ingalls junr: to lay that twenty acres of upland formerly graunted him by the towne, on the hill by Salli: ffries, and to lay if adjoyning, to the Southend and the east side of his fathers Land, not prejudic- ing any high way.


Sold to Joseph Willson a gore of Land between the Land of John Aslebeee and his owne Land, he paying to the lowne after the rate of 30 (shilling abbreviated) ? per acre, in specie formerly mentioned: & Good: Lovejoy Senr: & Hon Tyler are to see it layd out.


Att a lawfull Towne meeting this 3d: Day of March 1683/4 Capt: John Osgood was chosen Moderatr: for this meeting.


Whereas Richard Barker, Senr: lost two acres and an half of meadowe in the Beechen meadow, by Good: ffuller of Wills hill, the Towne hath graunted him libertie, to take an acre of it in a swamp lying between the Land of Stephen Parker & the land of Stephen Barker, the other acre & half to be taken in the wolf swamp, being layd out according to towne orde: (viz:) not exceeding two acres for one.


Sold to John Graunger two acres of upland in the South side of the way against his house he paying to the Towne for it wthin a twelve month either fourtie Shill- ings in money or three pounds in pay as the tome debts are to be payd (viz) one half wheat the other half Indian Corne at Country prist. (i.e. priced)


Sold to Samuell Marble a small Gore of Land lying betwixt the South end of his Land and the middle way going over the swamp and soe over the swamp just to stake in the swamp, he Constantly & always maintaining the sd middle way to be Conveniently passable to a teem & paying to the Towne for the sd Land, after the rate of thirty shillings in pay or twenty shillings in money, Capt: Bradstreet & John Aslbee are appointed to lay it out.


Sold to Moses Haggott a parcell of Rubbish ground joyning to his owne Land, not prejudicing any way he paying after the rate of thirty shillings in wheat & Indian Corne in equall proportions or twenty shillings an acre in money, to be payd to the Towne wthin a twelve month, & John Chandler & ffrancis Deanin are to lay it out.


Graunted libertie to John ffaulkner to lay downe to the Town twelve acres of his Land on the North end of the wallnut tree hill, and to take in leieu of it ten acres adjoyning to the Land of John Marstone June; and ye wolf swamp on ye north side of Ipswich rode,


Voted & passed that Daniell Poor Senr: & Thomas Johnson shall be the only lottlayers in the Towne tell others be chosen, & Nathan Parker is discharged of that place.


Att a lawfull Tame meeting, the 25th, of April 1684 Capt: John Osgood was chose moderator.

At a lawful meeting of the town this 5th of January 1634 Capt. John Osgood was chosen moderator for this present meeting. Capt. Bradstreet, Sergeant Barker, Christopher Osgood, Daniel Poor, Sr., and John Marsbn, Sr., were chosen selectmen for the year ensuing.


John Osgood, Jr., was chosen constable for the north end of the town for the year ensuing, and George Abbott, Jr., was chosen constable for the south end of the town for the year ensuing.


Corpll. John Chandler was chosen grand juryman for the year ensuing.


It was voted and passed that whatsoever person in the town hath sold any meadow to out town people, shall by the first Monday in March next give an account of sd quantity of meadow so sold and the persons to whom it was sold, or pay, to the town for default hereof the sum of five shill- ings, the aforsd account to be given to the selectmen for the time being and the said selectmen upon as aforsd are hereby ordered to gather the sd five shillings with the rest of the Town rates & this order to continue from year to year as men shall sell meadow.


It was voted and declared that all persons who have meadow ajoining to any swamps shall give them in writing to Capt. Bradstreet by the first day of Feb. next, upon the forfiture of ten shillings to the Town, to be gathered by the Selectmen with the Town rates. The occasion of sd vote was that the committee appointed in the year (82) may settle such bounds according to the Town order in the abovesd order in (82).


At a lawful tom meeting this 2d March 1684/5 Capt. John Osgood was chosen moderator for this meeting. It was voted & passed that whosoever shall fall any tree or trees across any public or private cart way, and left the same lay there twenty four hours shall forfeit for every such offense five shillings to the use of the Town to be gathered by the con- stable, by warrant from the selectmen any person complaining to the selectmen & making proof of the same.


It was voted and passed that all those that had land sold them by the town the last year shall get it layed out within this two months and to make a return of the same to the selectmen by the time appointed or shall forfeit five shillings to the town and their grant. It was also voted at the same time, that for the future what land shall be sold to any person by the town shall have it layed out within the year and returned to the selectmen upon the forfeiture of 10 shillings.

It was voted and passed that the selectmen that now are shall agree with John Grainger to build a convenient court yard for the parsonage house and to pay him out of a parcel of land on the west side of Shawshin river, lying between the land of Francis Faulkner and Daniel Poor, Sen.


Granted liberty to Samuel Marble to change so much land on the upper side of the way by his house as he shall take in to his lower hoptyard on that side of the way and Capt. Bradstreet and Ensign Stevens are to see it done.


Granted liberty to Ephraim Stevens to lay down that two acres of land the tom gave said Stevens, and to take up so much in the swamp that runs to Job's Folly, not perjudicing any person or way, and Corporal Martin and John Aslebee are to lay it out. Granted liberty to Ralph Farnum, Sen., to lay down forty acres of his great division and to take up thirty acres in the lieu of it upon the hill by Samuel Holt's, he leaving a road betwixt Goodman Holt's land and the land he takes up.


Sold to Jacob Marston twenty acres of upland on the south side of the way against the place where Joseph Parker, Jun., had a house standing, he the said Jacob paying to the town five pounds per annum for six years from the date hereof, the one half English, the other half Indian corn.


Sold to Timothy Aboott twenty rods of land adjoining to the twenty acres of land formerly granted to Edward Whittington, he the said Timothy paying to the town two shillings and six pence in money. Joseph Ballard and William Blunt to lay it out.


Granted liberty to Goodman Russell to lay down ten or twelve acres of upland on the west side of his land and lay so much on the southeast of his land not perjudicing any highway.


Granted to George Abbott 8 or ten rods by his well provided he pay the tom after the rate the tom sells land. Joseph and John Ballard to lay it out.


Granted liberty to Lt. Chandler to take as much swamp land adjoin- ing to the land he purchased of William Johnson as will satisfy according to town order for three quarters of an acre of meadow for his last division.


Granted to Sgt. Johnson liberty to take up a parcel of swamp accord- ing to town order as much as will satisfy for half an acre of meadow on the south side of his pasture before his house.

Voted and passed that for the future the selectmen shall from year to year make the ministers rate sometime in September. that so the con- stable may gather the English part may be gathered in October and the Indian Corn part as soon as it is merchantable.


It is ordered that the selectmen shall take care to make a new fence on the west side of Mr. Dean's pasture against those he adjoins to"

It was voted afterwards that the selectmen shall fence the west side of Mr. Dean's pasture by his house, only to set it up new but not to maintain it.


Voted that Ensign John Stevens and John Aslebee shall have the im- provement of twelve acres of land, for seven years from the date hereof the said land lying upon Bear Hill, and to leave it in English Stubble and to sow it well and sufficiently with English hay seed at the of the said term and to make use of no other timber or brush for the fencing of it but what now grows upon the ground they are to improve.


Granted to Ebenezer Barker two acres of upland adjoining to his land on the west side of Shawshin River which was part his father's great div- ision, and is in consideration of damage he received in his pay from the tom for building the parsonage house.


Granted liberty to Stephen Osgood to improve a parcel of land adjein- ing to the end of his lot, for seven years and at the end of seven years to leave it in English stubble and to sow it the last year well and suf- ficiently with English hay seed and to improve no other stuff for the fencing of it but what grows upon the said land. Lt. Chandler and Walter Wright to take an account of it.


At a lawful town meeting this 4th day of January 1685, Ensign John Stevens was chosen moderator for this meeting.


Capt. Dudley Bradstreet, Capt. John Osgood, Lt. Chandler, Ensign John Stevens and Corporal Samuel Martin were chosen for the selectmen for the year ensuing.


Corporal Nathan Stevens was chosen constable for the north end of the town for the year ensuing. James Frie was chosen constable for the south end of the town for the year ensuing.


Corporal Samuel Holt was chosen grandjury man for the year ensuing.

Sold to John Carleton twenty acres of upland lying betwixt the land of Samuel Frie and Henry Ingalls, Jr. his land inaving a sufficient road for cattle and carting betwixt said lands. He the said Carleton paying yearly to the town five pounds in good merchantable corn the one half English, the other half Indian, till he shall have paid thirty pounds, beginning the year from this present meeting.


Granted liberty to Henry Ingalls, Jr., to set up a sawmill upon Mustletoe river below Boston meadow way, he damnifying no highway to meadows, but no liberty given to make use of any town timber but what particular inhabitants of the town, bring for their own use, to be used in the town.


Voted and passed that the selectmen for this year shall have power to sue all constables or any others indebted to the town, ratifying and confirming hereby their act herein and also to manage all prudentials of the town as it here mentioned.


Granted liberty to Henry Holt to set a sawmill upon Ladle meadow brook provided he sell no timber out of town, nor to damnify any persons nor road.


Sold to John Bridges about two or three acres of upland or what shall appear to be there to his content, lying on the north side of ten acre meadow provided he pay to the town thirty shillings per acre, in such pay as the town sells land for, within this twelve months and also he is to allow Capt. Bradstreet a convenient cart way to that part of his meadow, and not to live upon said land himself nor suffer any so to do.


This he threw up to the town again.


Voted and passed that the way that goes by Samuell Blanchard his house, and hath done for many years, shall yet be continued a way for in- habitants to go to Beyinesi'k and Chelmsford - and for inhabitants to come to the town, but not to be reparable by the tom.


Sold to Sgt. John Barker about half an acre of upland or what shall be convenient for him joining to his father Barker his house lot, not prejudicing the way to the mill, he paying for it as land is usually sold (viz:) thirty shillings per acre.


Voted and passed that Joseph Ballard and John Abbott Senr. shall measure the country road through Abraham Foster his land and meadow, and to allow it two rods wide and lay so much to him adjoining to the same tract of land, either upone one side or one end so as to run the length or bredth of his said land.


Sold to Joseph Stevens an acre of swampy land lying on the southeast side of Ephraim Stevens his land, which was formerly in the possession of Thomas Poor, he paying to the town thirty shilling 20d. of which he hath already paid in 2 wolves which he catch in since the rate was made, and the other ten shillings to be paid out of the next wolf he catches.

Lt. Chandler was chosen for a lotlayer for this year to serve with Thomas Johnson, in the time of Goodman Poor his sickness, or till the tom take further order.


Sold to Joseph Robinson ten acres of upland adjoining to the land he formerly changed upon Mr. Dean his account, leaving a good highway there and paying to the town thirty shillings per acre, in specie, as land is sold by the town for, the paying five pounds per annum till the whole be paid beginning from the date hereof.


Whereas Robert Grey had formerly a grant of ten acres of upland upon condition he paid ten pounds to the town in such a time as is there men- tioned, the said Robert Grey came into this meeting and did freely resign up the said land to the town again, which the town hath accepted of. Sold to James Frie half an acre of swamp adjoining to his piece of meadow he hath in a meadow called millers meadow, he paying of fifteen shillings in English and Indian corn, good and merchantable, within this twelve month.


At a lawful town meeting this Ist of March 1685/6 Capt. John Osgood was chosen moderator for this meeting.


Sold to Ephraim Stevens a parcel of swamp near the ground he formerly bought of the town containing about two acres or what shall appear by measure, for thirty shillings per acre, the one half English, the other half Indian corn, to be paid by this time twelve months, he observing the town order for laying it out.


Granted liberty to Moses Haggett, to take up what land formerly sold him by the town which he forfeited by not observing the town order therein, and he is to pay 5d to the town, for this renewal of his grant, and for his land as formerly it was sold him.


Granted liberty to the Widow Abbott, the relict of George Abbott, Sr., to call forth the lotlayers and to new lay the said Abbot's great division of upland with four acres of swampland, according to a former order of the town, it having been formerly laid out and returned imperfectly so that it could not be entered in the records.


Granted liberty to Samuel Marble liberty to exchange a parcel of land he hath lying on the west end of Stephen Barnard's land he the said Barnard bought of said Marble, and to lay out so much on the south west side of a parcel of ground the town gave to Joshua Woodman for his loss he sustained by the Indians.
