SPECIAL NOTICE
The fact that an alarm-box ia located near their residence should be known to all persone; also the simple manner of giving an alarm in case of fire. The Fire Commissioner recommends to all persons who may see this notice that they familiarize themselves with the location of boxes in the vicinity of their homes and places of business and make the necessary inquiries to enable them in case of need to give an alarm or to direct othere to do so. Time aaved in . this way sometimes prevents a conflagration
In case of fire follow these
DIRECTIONS
Go to the nearest box to the fire A sign over each box directs how to give an alarm
Open the door of the box-pull the hook all the way down once and let go. Opening the door rings the bell on the door hut does NOT give an alarm
Listen for the working of the machinery in box. If you do Dot hear it, pull again
If then you hear no sound, go to the next nesrest box
Repeat the same there, but do not touch any other box if the nearest one gives the alarm
After giving the alarm remain awhile, if possible, by the box, so as to direct the firemen to the fire
SECOND ALARM-No person will give alarms for the same fire (after the first alarm has been given) without an order from the chief or the officer in command
CAUTIONS
1 Never open the box or touch the hook except in case of fire
2 Never give an alarm for fire seen at a distance
3 Be reasonably sure that there is a fire before giving an alarm
4 Be aure your box ia closed before leaving it
