oiled, cleaned and painted, and kept free from snow and ice. The work classified is:
I21 breaks in street mains.
142 breaks in outside service pipes.
25 breaks in inside service pipes.
90 service pipes cleaned outside.
61 service pipes cleaned inside.
38 service pipes extended inside.
5 meters set.
7 gates reset.
2 stand pipes reset.
Leaks and breaks are due in most part to defects in the pipes. In cast iron pipes it is invariably at a joint where a change in the line has been made without the proper cast- ings; to prevent this in the new lines laid there is placed at all junctions and angles a special casting made from draw- ings like Plate III.
34 of these castings were placed in the lines laid last year; the expense is only $6.00 more per ton than stock castings.
Still other breaks are caused by lightning, which will sometimes split a pipe the entire length of a street. Plate IV shows two "tees" taken out at junctions of Grove and Sixth streets and Grove street and Swain's Pond avenue, which were broken from this cause. This cut also shows the condition of the cement pipe in some of the streets.
