3. JOSEPH, S. of Joseph (2); was in the scout under Capt. Eleazar Melvin, which was attacked by Indians, May 31, 1748. Petty, wounded, and unable to travel, was left by his companions beside a spring, under a hut made of boughs, with the injunction to " live if he could," until relief could reach him. Two days after, Capt. Phineas Stevens, with a party from Fort Dummer, made a search, but could find no trace of him. June 5, Lt. Hunt and fifteen men left Nfd., to visit the scene of the conflict, and were absent four days. On the govt. pay roll, they are called " the party that went to bury Sergt. Petty;" and the probability is, that his body was found and buried at that time. He m. Hannah -
