REMARKS.

Your Fire Department have responded to thirteen alarms and have kept the engine houses and all apparatus up to the usual high standard of efficiency, and has standing to its credit the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars in the town treas- ury.

We recommend that instead of placing this amount back into the treasury, as is the usual custom with all unexpended bal- ances, to authorize the Board of Engineers to purchase hose, as our present hose supply is liable to be inadequate should two fires occur at the same time in different parts of the town, or should a fire break out in high wooden buildings covering a large space of ground, like L. Smith's Sons' Tannery. If request is granted it will add nearly 500 feet to our present stock of perfectly safe hose, and enable us to more effectually grapple the fire fiend,

We recommend that the town appropriate the sum of $1,800 for the use of the fire department for the ensuing year.

Respectfully submitted, J. F. BOYDEN, Chief. H. F. WALKER, F. W. TURNER, Clerk.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF THE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

During the past year the trustees of the Public Library have been able to rebind such books as came to require it dur- ing the year, and to have volumes of magazines bound as completed. The accumulation of books and magazines from the previous year which required binding, as stated in our last report, have also been bound and restored to public use, and the library is now in fair condition in this respect.

Though the appropriation for the last year was made upon a very economical basis, we have also been able to buy a moderate number of new books, in addition to some neces- sary expenditures to replace books which have been worn out.

The following gifts have been received by the library for which the trustees desire to express their thanks :

Munsey's Magazine, from Miss Florence Hill.

The Land of Sunshine (magazine), from the publishers.

Norwood Town Reports, from Francis Tinker, Esq.

Two books of music, from John C. Lane.

The town of Norwood does not own a set of its own town reports, and the trustees are endeavoring to collect and bind two sets, to be kept in the library for reference, and would be greatly obliged for gifts of the missing numbers, namely :

The 2d town report, 1874.

" 5th 1877.

« 8th 6 1880.

" 2d school committee report, 1874.

The library is open every evening in the week (except Sundays and holidays) and Wednesday and Saturday after-

75

noons: from one o'clock to nine o'clock Wednesdays and Saturdays, and from six o'clock to nine o'clock the remaining evenings of the week.

The following magazines are now regularly received at the library and in circulation : Arena, Atlantic, Century, Cos- mopolitan, Current Literature, Forum, Good Housekeeping, Harper's, Land of Sunshine, Lippincott's, Munsey's, New England, North American Review, Popular Science Monthly, Review of Reviews, Scribner's, Social Economist.

The number of books now in the library is 6,330. During the past year 12,327 books and 1,591 magazines have been taken out from the library, and the library has been freely consulted in the evening by teachers and scholars in our pub- lic schools and others for purposes of reference, and we have maintained such conveniences in the way of a table with lamps and seats for reading as our extremely limited accommodations would permit.

During the past period of business depression, and while subscriptions were being raised in town for the purpose of in- ducing the establishment of a book manufactory in our midst, we understand that the time has not been deemed auspicious for steps to provide a new Public Library building on the part of the committee having that matter in charge, but we trust that that committee will be continued, and that some steps will be taken in that direction in the near future.

We append to this report a financial statement, showing our receipts and expenditures for the past year, and also our esti- mate for the year to come. Before the late period of extreme economy the Public Library received an appropriation of seven hundred dollars in addition to the amount of the dog tax, and we hope that this rate of appropriation may be restored to the library as soon as possible, for in proportion to the population, or valuation of our town, or the patronage which our library receives, such a sum is no more than is granted for such pur- poses by other towns in our vicinity.

76

We would specially call attention to the fact that one month's expenses, including the salary of the librarian, be- comes due after the date of this report and before the annual town meeting, and if, therefore, we close the year with a balance on hand sufficient to meet these expenses, we will, nevertheless, have nothing in the treasury at the date of the town meeting.

At the commencement of the year Mr. Horace T. Atwood was re-elected chairman of the trustees, but declined further service in that capacity (though continuing in membership upon the Board), and John C. Lane, Esq., was chosen chair- man and has served in that office during the year. The Board desire to make public expression of their sense of obligation to Mr. Atwood for his faithful and valuable service as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Public Library for the term of years during which he has held that office.

Respectfully submitted for the Trustees,

MARIA E. COLBURN, Secretary.

REPORT OF CEMETERY COMMIS- SIONERS.

The Highland Cemetery Commissioners present herewith their annual report : --

A number of lots have been graded, and are ready for sale.

Some years ago the Commissioners called the attention of the owners of lots to the advisability of depositing with the Town Treasurer sufficient money, the yearly income of which would give their lots perpetual care. A number have done so; we desire that the number be increased.

The Cemetery has been under the personal charge of Mr. W. A. Talbot, and the result of his labor has been satisfactory. He also has the selling of lots and single graves.
