Decayed teeth are not the only defect among our children.

There are some who have adenoids, some are undernour- ished, being underweight and under measurement. Most of our cases of tuberculosis in after life are drawn from this class.

I have examined every pupil attending school this year. My totals are as follows :

Wayland 114

Cochituate 192

Total in town 366

Percentage having diseased teeth 34%.

Percentage in 1920 49%.

REPORT OF COOKERY CLASSES AND LUNCH ROOM

Mr. Benedict :

I hereby submit a report of the Cookery Classes and Lunch room service in the Wayland High school.

The lunch room service is conducted along the same gen- eral lines as last year: There has been a substantial growth in the number of pupils taking advantage of this service. Food is served at as low a price as is consistent with the initial cost of material. The accounts show a surplus in September of $8.12. in October $10.96. The cost of materials used in the cookery classes is covered by money received for the lunches.

There are two courses in cookery, an elementery course given to the girls of the eighth grades of both schools and an advanced course given to all High school girls and required of the girls in the Freshman class.

As now arranged the cookery classes are operated in con- junction with the preparation of the lunches ; this in combina- tion with small quarters makes it very difficult to conduct class- es to the best advantage. If arrangements could be made whereby a larger room with individual equipment could be had. and a person employed to prepare the lunches under the direction of the Cookery teacher more of the teacher's time would be available for teaching other subjects in household arts as for example sewing.

Respectfully submitted,

J. OLIVE ALLISON.

REPORT OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES

The annual report of the Librarian to the Trustees is herewith submitted.

A comparison of the figures of this report with those of ten years ago, will give an idea of the growth of the activities of the library.

Number of books Year's Circulation

in Library Accessions

Year ending March 1, 1912 17,665 286 11,392

Year ending Jan. 1, 1922 19,745 863 25,904

A large number of obsolete and worthless books have been withdrawn from the shelves and catalogue between these dates. The necessity for this is inevitable in every library. Especially in fiction many books are of an ephemeral nature, although persistently called for during their time of popular- ity. In scientific works, those of useful arts, medicine and surgery, sociology, mechanics and encyclopaedic works gener- ally, constant removal is imperative. The growth and ex- tension of attainment in these branches in our age is enor- mous, and so-called standard books quickly become inade- quate and obsolete. It has therefor been the policy of the Trustees of this Library not to cumber the shelves with a use- less accumulation of dead material, but within reasonable limits, to retain only live, virile and useful books.

The above comparision of figures will make it clear that the increased work of the library cannot be done on any past financial basis. An increase in our administrative force is imminent, and the remuneration of our librarians must be kept commensurate with increased duties. For this reason the trustees have suggested to the Finance Committee of the town an increased appropriation for the ensuing year.

A meeting of the Newton Neighborhood Group of Lib- rarians was held in the Library Wednesday October 26, 1921,

93

which was attended by forty members. Dr. Frank H. Chase of the Boston Public Library gave a valuable and helpful ad- dress which was followed by a lunch. Our library, both as to its architectual and administrative features, was the re- cipient of many compliments from persons most competent to judge of these.

Following the course initiated last year, the list of new books added the past year will be distributed to the towns- people in a separate phamphlet form. This will be done at 110 expense to the town.
