REPORT OF WAYLAND WATER COMMITTEE
December 31, 1921
The following report is a supplement to the one rendered in the Official Town Report for the year 1918, pages 123 to 129.
In the passing away of Mr. Paul T. Draper the Commit- tec suffered the loss of an honored and helpful member, always willing to do, and wise in counsel. In further pursuit of a suppyly of water for the Town, we continued our investiga- tion of the Hall Spring. On recommendation of the State Board of Health, and Engineer J. J. Van Valkenburg, it being supposed that an adequate supply could be obtained in this vicinity : but when the wells were driven, and the tests were made in the words of the Engineer " The tests demonstrated the fact that it is highly improbable that any considerable amount of potable water additional to that flowing from the Hall Spring can be obtained in the neighborhood, and that the hope of obtaining a water supply for the Town from this source must be abandoned.
Your Committee then took up the matter with the Metro- politan District Commission to see what was possible in ob- taining a supply from that source and found that it would be necessary to get permission from the legislature.
In view of the provision of the Parmenter will in refer- ence to a water supply for a portion of the Town and the pos- sibilities that this opens up. your committee feels that they should await further developments.

REPORT OF PARK COMMISSIONER
The Board organized with Kobert Stearns as Chairman and W. D. Valentine as Clerk. Lack of funds prevented any improvement work until after the special town meeting in November. Plans were made for improving the lot at the corner of Cochituate Road and the State Road which had been purchased by the town, and which will form the entrance to the playground.
In this we were materially assisted by the Highway De- partment which was glad of an opportunity to better the roads at this point. With the appropriation voted at the special mecting a substantial retaining wall was built at the culvert where the brook passes under Cochituate Road, the banks of the brook straightened and graded and the remainder of the lot filled in. The driven well on the lot was capped to pre- serve it for possible future need. The expense of this work for labor and material amounted to $315.00 of which one bi'l of $12.20 is unpaid having been received too late to be includ- ed in the year's account. Work was also begun on the grading at the Cochituate playground but work was laid over till Spring on account of freezing weather. There also remains to be done the final grading and seeding down of the lot; and the appropriation of $300.00 asked for is designed to restore the unexpended balance : of last year's appropriation for com- pleting the work already in hand; and to leave in the hands of the commission a modest balance as a working fund to meet any emergency that might : rise. The Commission would no. adv. ve the undertaking of diy further extensive impovements at this time, but believes that a comprehensive plan for the developement of both playgrounds should be made for the guidance of this and succeeding boards, and with the return of better times, the making of a small appropriation each year to carry forward the work in accordance, with such plan. The sum of $25.00 was received from F. J. Bigwood for pas- turage privilege on occupied portion of the Wayland play- groun and the same was turned over to the Town Treasurer.
Respectfully submitted, ROBERT STEARNS, Chairman JOHN WIGHT W. D. VALENTINE, Clerk
