far Condefcended to as to have y" brought in, and yt alltho Mr Fifk would not bring y" in, yet yt we Should be willing to get light where we Can get it, if not iu ye particular way yt we would desire it. It was allso alledged yt very probably those papers might be to ye merits of ye Caufe, & y our Justifying or not Justifying might be determined by ym, for if we found ye several parts of ye chh moving for peace by propofals of peace, & if (95) thofe propofals were reafonable Chriftian ones as M' Fifk says yy are we might pofsibly think yt Mr Gee & his Chh Infted of pafsiug ym by in Silence & taking no notice of y™ might have acted a better part to have Improved these propofals as far as he could towards ye producing of peace among y™ than in proceeding att once to admouifh y". It was allso Said y' by bringing in these propoals & making Some tryal of ym we might probably discern more clearly where ye fault lay, for alltho according to ye pref- ent procefs of ye matter ye whole Chh was to come under Cen- fure, yet all allowed yt Some of y" were not to blame, & by mak- ing Some Experiment with thefe propofals perhaps we might find where to euter all ye blame, and many other things were offered as arguments for ye bringing iu thofe Papers, arguments So Strong & clear yt I thought yr was no gainfaying y", but when ye votes were put whether yy Should be brought in behold yy pafsed in ye negative, which was very grevious to a great number of ns, accordingly five Elders, viz M' Barnard, M' Holyoke, Mr Wigglesworth, Mr Tufts & M" Chipman gave in a Paper to ye Moderator Signifying yt as that light was withheld from them which yy apprehended necefsary to Judge upon ye Cafe before y yy Should withdraw from ye Council & did accordingly & five or 6 other Elders, viz : Mr Hale, M' Emmerson, Mr Storer, Mr Bowman, Mr Jaques, I think & myfelf Stood up & declared to ye Council yt Seeing those papers were withheld yt we apprehended might afford light in ye affair before us, we utterly declined to give onr Judgement pro or Con, upon ye proceedigs of ye North Chh, or ye other 3 Chhs afterwards in Conjunction with ym for as ye cafe now stood we had not, neither might we be allowed light either to Justify or Condemn y' proceedings & y" Mr Stone & Several other delegates Stood up & declared yy were of ye Same mind. Upon this y" was a motion made to reconsider ye

votes about those papers but it Could not be obtained. So ye five forementioned Elders withdrew & ye other five or 6 of us with a number of delegates sat as Neuters, & ya ye Council went on & Justified all ye Steps yt had been taken by ye North Chh & ya ye 3 other Chs in Conjunction with them. After thefe votes were pafsed, ye Council voted to unite thofe four Chhs with y" & y" proceeded to renew ye advice & admonition to ye Chh by a Letter & have adjourned y"felves to 15th of October (96) next, waiting till yt time to see what effect y" admonition will have, which for my own part I have but little Expectation of Confidering how ye matter has been driven on but as thefe pro- ceedings are like to occasion a great deal of debate in ye Country I thought it proper for ye help of my Memory to Commit to writ- ing ye most remarkable occurrences in y8 Council, whilst yy are frefh in my mind, & I would only obferve how Unhappy it is, yt when those who come together to heal divisious among others Should be divided among y"felves, a Melancholy token yt ye Chhs y" Convened had not so much of ye Prefence of great head of ye Chh att y" Convention as is to be defired att all times efpe- cially upon Such a Solemn occafion as this.
And as to ye votes of ye Councils in ye Justification of ME Gee's proceedings in ye Several Steps Suppofing y" had been no propofals I cannot but think yy have gone aside ye letter of ye Platform, & ye Spirit & design of ye Synod 1662, & I am at prefent fully of opinion yt the N. Chh. in Bofton was not a proper Chh to go to begin ye 3d way of Communion upon ye Chh of Salem, 1st because yy had prejudged ye affair & 2ndly because of y" distance y" being so many other Chha nearer y' Should have performed yt act of Charity. Indeed if Chh8 in ye Neighbor- hood had been applyed to & had refufed y" a Chh So diftant as ye N. Chh might have been Juftified in going. But y" I cannot See how yt Chh can be Justified in calling in ye 3 or 4 Churches viz,-ye Old South Chh in Bofton, & M" Whites att Glouster both of which had been yr in Council & prejudged ye matter & Mr Chevers of Rumney Marsh & M' Wigglesworths att Ipswich but he did not go. Ye Platform Expressly Says such a Chh must acquaint other Neighbour Chhs :
