1. We apprehend yt as yr is a general decay of piety among us, So yr are allso a great many disorderly walkers, not only among thofe yt are baptifed & So reckoned ye children of ye Chh, but even among thofe yt have publickly owned ye Covenant, yea & among thofe yt are Members in full Communion with us even such as neglect yr bufinefs, yt frequent Taverns, & publick houfes & follow Unlawfull Gaming, & Excef- sive drinking Strong drink, and are profane in y"

Converfation, whereby yy greatly dishonour yr Chrif- tian name & profefsion, break ye good & wholefome laws of ye Land, mifpend yr precious time Impoverifh y" families blaft yr reputation, Impare yr health, Unfit ymfelves for bufinefs, run ymfelves into Inumerable Snares & temptations & Extremely hazard yr Im- mortal Souls.

2.

We apprehend yt ye Increafing & prevaling of Such Sinful disorders as yy have done of late among us is very much owing to our not Exercifing ye faithfull & friendly watch over one another ; as we have mutually & Solemnly Engaged by Covenant; & to a General Lukewarmnefs & Unexemplarinefs among our Selves.

3.

Under a deep Sense of our former defects we hum- bly Implore ye pardoning mercy of God thro Jesus Chrift, att ye same time refolving & Solemnly promif- ing yt by ye help of Divine grace we will Endeavor more Effectually to discountenance & discourage Such Sinfull disorders for ye future, by taking care each one to reform himfelf in thefe or other Sins yt onr Consciences Charge us with, and by being more Cir- cumspect & Exemplary in our Carriage, particularly we promife Steddily & diligently to Imploy our Selves in ye bufinefs of some honeft Calling, yt we will carefully avoid drinking Strong drink wherein is Ex- cefs, all Unlawfull Gaming, & yt we will be Cautious of going in or Sitting att Taverns and publick houfes. And as we would be willing to deny ourfelves even our lawfull liberty in many things to prevent others from Stumbling thereat ; So we now promise for our Selves refpectively yt in order to discountenance this evil & pernicious Cuftom of needlesly going to & Sitting Long att ye Taverns : we will not frequent Such publick houfes either on days or in ye Evenings, except when we have lawfull bufinefs yt Calls us thither, & yt we will Endeavour So to order our af- fairs as yt we may but Seldom have occafion to go to Such houfes & yt when we are obliged to go to

Such places we will endeavour always to Set Exam- ples of Sobriety & good order by moderate drinking & Seafonably departing.

4. We do Solemnly promife yt we will more faithfully watch over one another, and all among us yt are in any degree related to ye chh by y" Baptifm or owning ye Covenant, with a Spirit of meeknefs, love and tendernefs, Counfelling Exhorting & admonifhing one another frequently as we see occafion leaft any be hardened thro ye deceitfulnefs of Sin & in thofe cafes wrin we apprehend is applicable & necefsary we will Endeavour to profecute our Saviour's rule with re- fpect to admonitions as laid down in Math : 18 : 15, 16,17.

5. That a Suitable Letter be Sent to ye Inholders & Retailers.

N. B. ye letter is to be prepared & Sent by ye Paftor, & ye purport of it to be an Earneft Exhortation to y™ to do what in ym lyes to prevent Intemperance, Gaming or any diforder att yr houfes.

And now O Lord God of our Fathers keep thefe things forever in ye Imaginations of ye thoughts of ye heart of this pple & prepare their heart unto thee. 1, Chron : 29 : 18.

Att a meeting of ye Brethren of ye Chh March 22 1736

1.

Voted, That y' be a Committee of ye Chh Chofen to Confult with our Paftor about such meafures as Shall be thought most likely under ye Divine blefsing to reform ye growing disorders yt are among us & make report to ye Chh at Some other meeting.

2. That ye said Committee consist of Seven of ye brethren.

Records of the First Church in Cambridge.

The Committee chofen by ye Brethren of ye Clib att yr meeting on March 22, 1736/7 to Confult with our Pastor about Such meafures to be taken as Shall be thought moft likely (under ye Divine blefsing) to reform ye growing disorders among us, & make report to ye Brethren att another meeting, do unani- moufly agree with our Paftor to report as follows, viz :-

1.

That it is matter of humiliation to this Chh yt not withftanding ye promife we make to every one we admit to our Communion of watching over y" for y" good &c. & notwithftanding ye Solemn Engagement we entered into Some time ago, as to walk circum- fpectly our Selves, So to Exercife a more friendly & faithfull watch over one another, yt this duty is Still So much neglected, whereby disorderly walkers In- stead of being reclaimed are in danger of being hardened thro ye deceitfulnefs of Sin.

2. That for as much as it is found by Sad Exper- ience yt ye Excufe of chriftian watchfulnefs over one another (which is ye duty of every one) is much neglected by reafon wr of, Intemperance, Idlenefs & other Immoralities & disorders have prevailed among us, greatly to ye difhonour of God & of our holy profefsion, & to ye hurt and ruin of many.

(52)

Wherefore we propose & recommend to ye Chh as what we apprehend may be Serviceable for ye reviv- ing religion & Supprefsing growing disorders yt yr be a number of Wife, prudent & blamelefs Chriftians Chofen among our Selves, whofe special care it shall be to Infpect & obferve ye manners of profefsing Chriftians among us, & Such as are under ye Care & watch of this Chh & when yy hear of any Sinfull & disorderly behaviour of any of ym yt yy Inquire into ye truth yr of & when yy perceive ye truth of Such evil reports, yt one or more of ym together (as occa- fion Shall require) do adminifter Exortations & ad- monitions to ye offender agreable to ye nature & circumstances of ye offence, with faithfulnefs but yet

with all meeknefs & tendernefs, and when Such private ad- monitions dont anfwer ye End, yt yy advife with our Paftor about a more publick procedure with Such offenders.

And yt in cafe of open Scandal yt require ye publick no- tice of ye Chh yy Exhibit a Complaint to our Pastor; and in all cafes yt Shall be thought proper to be laid before ye Chh, yt yy procure & exhibit to our Said Paftor, ye Evi- dences yt may be had for ye Support of ye Complaint & for ye Conviction of ye offender.

3. And yt this method may be ye more Efectual to anfwer ye End aimed att it is Proposed yt yr be nine of ye Brethren chofen into this Service, viz- three in ye Body of ye Town, one upon ye Common, one in Charleftown End two att Me- notomy, & two on ye South Side of ye river and yt yy continue in ye aforesd Service & Trust for ye Space of one year.

4. Finally it is proposed That this Chh Should Exprefsly declare yt ye defign of Such a Committee is not to be Understood to Excnfe private Chriftians from Exercifing ye same Chriftian watch or from administering ye Same private admonitions to one another which by yr Covenant & profefsion yy are obliged unto.
