(115) Some Minutes relating to ye Sale of ye Minifterial Farm att Lexington and ye Improvement of ye Monies procured by ye Sale thereof for ye ufe of ye Miniftry which I think proper to Enter in ye Church Book, for the Information of my Succef- sors in ye Miniftry.

But not having any Authentick Copies of ye Votes which have been pafsed relating to Said affair. I Shall only mention Several things according to my own knowledge or Remem- brance of them. The Authentick votes being to be found in ye Town Records or ye Proprietors Records, or Parifh Records.

The Farm was att ye farther End of Lexington towards Bedford Containing 500 acres. Given in former time by ye Proprietors of ye Town for ye ufe of ye Miniftry In this Town & Place (according to ye beft of my Remembrance) My Pred- ecefsor ye Revd Mr Brattle had Leafed out ye Said Farm and there were Several years of ye Leafe to run att his Death which Leafe did not reftrain ye Tennants from Cutting & Car- rying off ye Wood & Timber. So yt it was thought great Strip & waste would be Committed, ye Timber cut off & ye Farm but little Cultivated. Accordingly after my Settlement in ye Miniftry in this place (which was Octbr 9, old ftile 1717) It was thought beft to Sell ye Farm & put ye money out to In- terest, till Lands more convenient for ye ufe of ye Miniftry Could be purchafed. Accordingly in or about ye year 1719 or 1720. The Town voted to Sell and did Sell ye Sd Farm for £900 of ye Province Bills, ye Currency of that Day. One hundred & Twenty Pounds of ye money ye Town Improved towards re- pairing ye Parfonage Houfe. Sixty Pounds were Expended in Law Suits, &c. by ye Committee Imployed to manage ye affair.

So yt ye original Sum yt was to put to Intereft was Seven hundred & Twenty Pounds. Now my Agreement with ye Town relating to this Money procured by ye Sale of Sd Farm was yt

229

Records of the First Church in Cambridge.

I & I think my Succefsors Should Nominate a Treasurer for receiving and Improving Said Monies : and ye Town to give yr Approbation of Sd Choice, or if not I to Choose one or another till yy Concurred and that I should draw Two thirds of ye Interest & ye other third to be added yearly to ye Principal : which was Indeed my own Propofal Choofing to forego that third of ye Interest that ye Principal might be a growing Es- tate as ye Farm was. Accordingly I have Conftantly received Two thirds of ye whole Intereft and as ye Principal was yearly increafed by ye addition of one third of ye Interest so my In- tereft Increafed proportionally from year to year. I nominated Andrew Bordman Efq" The College Steward for Treasurer and the Town Concurred therewith and he Continued in Said office & Trust untill ye Day of his Death which was May 30, 1747. after which I nominated his Son ye prefent Andrew Bordman Efqr which Nomination ye Parifh Concurred with, who con- tinues in Sd Trust to this Day.

The Late Mr Bordman ye Winter before he died viz, Jan. 27. 1746/7 gave me a Lift of all ye Bonds Containing ye Said Monies under his hand as Treafurer which Paper together with a Paper of ye like Import from his Son ye prefent Treasurer, baring Date June 18, 1752 may be found in a Drawer of my Scriptore where are my Deeds & other valuable Papers.

(116) By ye Lift of Bonds given in by Mr Bordman ye first Treaf- urer of Jany 27, 1746/7 It appears yt ye Principal of ye Bonds amounted to ye Sum of £1052 old Tenor.

Interest due upon ye Bonds Jany 22,

1746/7 as belonging to ye Principal £68.6.4

And what he charges himself with alltho

he never charged nor received anything during ye whole time of his Service & Trust, £14.7.0

£1134.13.4

So yt in ye Space of about 27 years ye Nominal Sum In- creased £414.3.4. I Say ye Nominal Sum, For by ye Unhappy State of our Medium Viz. Province Bills, during thofe years yy depreciated to Such a degree & no remedy provided in ye loss to help ye Creditors to ye just value of y" Bonds.

It was but nominal, for alltho ye Nominal Sum was So much

230

Records of the First Church in Cambridge.

Increafed yet ye real value was much diminifhed ye addition of ye third of ye Intereft did by no means make up for ye Sink- ing of ye Bills.

But about ye year 1750 The Medium was Exchanged, ye Bills called in Lawful Money 6/8 Established and a Law made obliging all Debtors upon Bond to pay in yr Debts according to ye value of ye Bills when ye Debt was Contracted. By which means there was a Considerable Saving to this Estate ; allthough by no means Sufficient to make up for ye Lofs during 30 years of depreciating Bills.

But upon ye Exchange of ye Bonds into Lawful Silver money & according to ye value of ye Bills when ye Bond was given. The Nominal Sum in old Tenor was Confiderably Increased. For upon Reckoning & Settling ye Intereft with Andrew Bord- man Efqr ye Prefent Treafurer June 18, 1752. He gave me in a Lift of ye Bonds then in his hands (which Paper is De- pofited with ye former in my Scriptore) which amounted in ye Principal to £288.15.1. Lawful money, which makes in old Tenor £2165.13.1 and att ye Same time yr was of Interest due upon Said Bonds, to ye value of £170 old tenor to that day And I then received full two thirds of ye Intereft of all ye Bonds as I have from ye Begining.

And now we See yt att yt day, viz, 1752. There is added to ye Principal above £40 old Tenor Every year, whereby it becomes a growing Estate, and it was my defign in Confenting to ye Sale & ye defign of ye pple in Selling yt it Should be a growing Estate, and therefore I hope No Successor of mine in ye Ministry will ever defire or demand more than two thirds of ye Intereft of this money.

And I defire you let me Solemnly Charge ye People of this Parifh to abide ftrictly by this Rule of adding one third of ye Intereft conftantly to ye Principal and not from any Par- fimonious Spirit apply it to any other ufe then to ye Increafing ye Fund. Which is ye only way to have ye pious Defigns of our fore Fathers in giving ye Farm & of ye Children in selling it, (117) Most effectually answered, For you may Easily See yt by Such a constant addition to ye Principal it will att length afford an Income equal to what we may Supose ye Farm under good Improvement would be likely to Rent for. Nay

231

Records of the First Church in Cambridge.

let me add what Some of you may Easily compute, that by keeping this vote & agreement of adding one third of ye Intereft to Principal Sacred & Inviolable that by ye 3d & 4th Generation It will of itself afford a Comfortable & Decent Support for a Minister without any Tax upon ye pple.

Memdm I would further Say yt as it was Propofed att ye time of Selling sd Farm yt ye money Should be laid out in Lands more Convenient for ye Miniftry. And as it was necefsary for me ye Incumbent to manifeft my confent to ye Sale of Sª Lands. under my Hand. So in ye Several Deeds which were made of ye Land I Signified my Confent with this Condition provided they purchafed other Lands with ye money more Convenient for ye Miniftry, which is not done. However if ye money be Effect- ually Secured & ye prefent regulation it is under Carefully obferved it may anfwer as good if not better purpofes,

NATH11 APPLETON.

In ye year 1768 Andrew Bordman Efqr refigned his office as Treafurer of y' above mentioned money, and att a Parifh Meeting I Nominated Dr. William Kneeland Efqr for Treafurer to which the Parifh Confented.

March 1769. I settled accounts with Dr Kneeland who paid me ye full of my Two thirds of ye Interest to February laft paft and gave me an account of the Bonds & Monies (pro- cured by ye Sale of the Ministry Farm att Lexington) then in his hands, viz.

Bonds in lawfull money.
