1784 Feb. 9th. The Revd D' Nath' Appleton departed this life in the 91st year of his age & 67th of his ministry.
Feby 15. This day his funeral folemnity was attended. The body was carried to the meeting house. Revd Mr Cushing of Waltham prayed. The surviving Pastor of this Church delivered a funeral ad- dreis. A funeral anthem was sung, after which the procefsion advanced to the burying place and the body was committed to the tomb.

After ye unanimous acceptance of ye foregoing Report.
2. Deacon Whittemore brought in his account of Extraordinary Expenses in providing for ye Communion Table from ye year 1741 to this day amounting to thirteen Pounds nine pence two farthings, which was allowed to him to be taken out of ye Stock in ye hands of ye Deacons.
3. That thirty Shillings Lawful mony be allowed to Each of ye three Deacons, to be taken out of ye mony in their hands for ye care, trouble & Expense they have been att, in selling ye wood & then ye land of ye Chh Lot at Newton.
4. That ye Committee which Shall be appointed to Infpect ye above Said Fund Shall do ye Same annually in ye month of June.
5. That ye whole of ye Report of ye Committee or so much of it as our Reverend Paftor Shall think proper, be read to ye Chh, after ye next Communion Service is over.
Att a meeting of ye Brethren of ye Chh May 20. 1774.
1. Voted that Deacon Whittemore, Capt. Stedman, Capt. Mar- rett, Deacon Prentice, Mr Peter Tufts, Capt. Gardner, Capt. Robbins be a Committee to Infpect ye manners of profefs- ing Christians &c. for this year.
2. Voted that Doctor Wm Kneeland Efq" M" Abraham Watfon, Jun' Captain Gardner, & Capt. Stedman he a committee to Inquire into ye State of ye Chh Stock of Monies Bonds or Notes in ye Deacons Hands, to report to ye Chh ye State thereof, and how ye produce is applied and that ye Committee Infpect ye Same Some time in ye Month of June next
3. God, in his holy Providence having taken away by Death on April 4th laft paft ye worthy faithfull & highly Efteemed Deacon Sam" Sparhawk, voted that on ye next Lecture Day, viz : on ye 15th of July next to proceed to ye choice of a deacon.

Such was ye Dark & gloomy afpect with refpect to our Public & Political affairs, that it was ye General agreement of ye Towns in ye Province, by ye recommendation of ye Re- prefentatives, before yr difsolution, to have & keep a day of humiliation & Prayer, and 14th of July was Generally agreed upon for that purpofe. Accordingly we had a Chh meeting on 14 July after ye afternoon Exercife.
Att a meeting of ye Brethren of ye Chh July. 14. 1774.
1. The Brethren brought in yr written votes for a Deacon and Capt. Thomas Gardner was Chofen.
2. Deacon Prentice having by a Paper given in this day, re- figned his office of a Deacon, by reason of age & Infirmities ye Chh accepted ye Same and voted ye Thanks of ye Chh to him for his faithfull Service in that office.

3. The Brethren proceeded to choofe a Deacon Inftead of Deacon Prentice who had refigned & bringing in their written votes M" Aaron Hill was Chofen into that office.
Att a Meeting of ye Brethren of ye Chh Sept. 8, 1774. Capt Thomas Gardner declined from Serving in ye office of a Deacon from ye Multiplicity of other business he was Engaged in. Mr Aaron Hill accepted ye office of a Deacon to which he was chofen.
1. Vote The Committee of ye Chh Exhibited a complaint againft the widow Elizabeth Champney a member of this Chh, which was read, and alltho She had a copy of ye Complaint Sent to her, with a notification of ye Chh meeting this day, defiring her attendance, yet did not appear. However ye Chh willing to Exercise all forbearance, Sufpended reading ye Evidences in Support of ye Complaint and adjourned ye Confideration of ye Complaint for 8 weeks, that is till ye next Lecture day and that she withdraw from ye Communion till ye matter shall be heard att foreappointed meeting.
2. That ye Evidences be desired to attend att ye Said Meeting.
3. A report of ye Committee to inquire into ye State of ye Chh. Stock of Monies & Bonds, or Notes in ye Deacons Hands

was read & accepted, by which it Appears there was £210.14.1 L. M. att Intereft and allso in Deacon Whittemores hands & upon Interest £39, 5.52 befides forty Shillings in Said Dea- con hands for any Emergencies.
4. Voted, agreeable to ye report of Sd Committee yt ye Bonds & other Securities of monies in ye Deacons hands, Should be so managed, yt ye Intereft of ye whole Should be payable att ye Same time viz : on ye first day of April yearly.
Att a Meeting of ye Brethren of ye Chh Novbr 4. 1774.
The Widow Elizabeth Champney was notified to attend att this Meeting to Make Answer to ye Complaint Exhibited againft her by ye Chh Committee for Infpecting ye manners of Profefsing Cliriftians &c. as mentioned in ye votes of ye foregoing Meeting but she still declined attending upon ye meeting, without giving any Sufficient reafon for her neglect or refufall. Therefore Voted that She the Sd Elizabeth Champney be Suspended from Communion in all Special Ordinances, untill she Appear before ye Church and gives Chriftian Satisfaction to ye Chh, with respect to ye heinons Crimes She is Charged with in ye Complaint Exhibited against her by Said Committee.
N. B. The Complaint is among ye Papers in this Book. Nov. 10. I with 3 of ye Chh Committee viz : Deacon Whittemore, Deacon Prentice, & Capt. Stedman went to ye Widow Champney honfe & delivered to her ye Vote of ye Chh with a Solemn admonition having first read ye Same to her with Such further admonitions, Counsels & Exhortations as I thought proper.

1. Agreed by handy votes to Choofe a Committee to Infpect ye Manners of Profefsing Chriftians &c. according to our ufnal practice.
2. Deacon Whittemore, Capt. Stedman, Capt. Marrett, Dea- con Hill. M' Timothy Tufts, Capt. Robbins & Mr Jackson were chofen a committee for ye aforefaid Service.

3. Whereas our Revd & very aged Paftor is att Prefent under Such bodily Infirmities as to render it doubtfull whether he will be able to adminifter ye Sacraments on ye Approaching Sabbath.
Voted in Such Case it is agreeable & is ye Defire of this Chh that ye Hond & Revd Prefident Langdon Should adminifter ye Same, and att any other times when necefsary occafion calls for it.
4. That Doctor Wm Kneeland Efq' Abraham Watfon Efq" Capt. Stedman & Capt. Marret be a committee to Inquire into ye Chh Stock of Monies Bonds or Notes in ye Deacons Hands & to report ye state yrof to ye Chh & how ye Produce is Ap- plied, and that ye Committee inspect ye Same in ye Month of June Next.
5. The Chh voted to Choofe a third Deacon And Voted to Come to a Choice on Thursday next (the day appointed for Public Fasting & Prayer) in ye afternoon when ye Public Service Shall be over : to which time ye Meeting of ye Brethren is ad- journed.
Memdm The aged Paftor thro bodily diforders was unable to carry on ye Services of ye Fast neither could any help be obtained, so that there was no public Service on ye Fast & Consequently ye Chh meeting failed.
May 11. After ye afternoon Services ye Chh met and voted yt on ye next Lord's day after ye Exercise was over yy would proceed to choofe a Deacon.
May 18. The Chh accordingly met & brought in their writ- ten votes for a Deacon and Mr Stepheu Sewall, Professor of Hebrew &c. was Chofen into that office.
And after Some time for Confideration He was pleafed to accept Sª office.

A letter was read from a Committee of ye Chh in Watertown defiring our Prefence and afsiftance by Paftor & Delegates att ye Ordination of M" Daniel Adams ye next Week ye Chh Confented to Send & Chofe the Prefident [Samuel Langdon], Dr Winthrop, Mr Wigglesworth, Deacon Hill & Abraham Watfon Efqr for Delegates.
2. Agreed to Choofe a Committee as ufual for Infpecting ye Manners of Profefsing Chriftians &c. and by handy votes. Deacon Whittemore, Capt. Stedman Capt. Marrett, Deacon Hill, Mr Timothy Tufts, Capt. Robbins & Mr Jackson were chofen for that Service. 2. The Report of ye Committee Appointed to Inquire into ye Chh Stock of Monies, Bonds, or Notes in ye Deacons Hands, dated June 30. 1779. was read & accepted, and it appears by ye account viz :

£53,15.10} part of ye Ballance to continue in Deacon Whittemores hands he paying Intereft therefore.
£2.0.0 further part of Sd Ballance to be kept in Bank by ye Deacon for Contingencies.
£2.6.11 ye remaining part of Sª Ballance is to reft in ye Dea- cons Hands till ye Same be Increafed. Deacon Whittemore gave his Promifsory Note for £53,15,10} att ye Bottom of ye Report.
3. A Petition of ye Brethren & Sifters on ye South Side of ye River Signifying y' Defire to be Difmifsed & recommended to ye bufinefs of being Incorporated into a diftinct Chh. for En- joying ye Special ordinances of ye Gospel more Conveniently by themfelves. Upon which ye Chh Voted that ye Within named Thomas Sparhawk, Mary Sparhawk, Eliphalet Robbins, John Stratton, Mercy Stratton, Chriftian Fuller, Mervial Dana, Samuel Smith Larned, Mary Larned, Sufannah Jackson, Anna Dana, Hannah Sparhawk who are now Members of this Chh and in good Standing therewith, And this Chh fully Con- fents yt ye Sd Brethren & Sifters be Embodied into a diftinct Chh whenever ye Providence of God Shall Call them Thereunto and heartily recommend them to his Gracious Guidance and Protection.
Memdm Mrs Mary Sparhawk who is a very blamelefs & Exemplary Christian who Signed ye Petition with ye reft Aprehensive of Some difficulties defired yt her difmifsion might be Sufpended for ye present, But she Some time after Confented to be dif- mifsed & was accordingly difmifsed.
4. That ye Same Committee be Continued to Inquire &c into ye Chh Stock in ye Deacons hands & make report thereof.

Voted that Capt. Stedman, Deacon Sewall, Deacon Hill. Mr Timothy Tufts & Mr Munroe be a committee for inspecting ye manners of Profefsing Chriftians &c.
Voted that Dr Kneeland, Abraham Watfon Efqrs. Capt. Stedman and Mr Gannet be a Committee to Inquire into ye Chh. Stock in ye Deacons Hands and that they look two years back there having been no report ye year paft, & make return to ye Brethren of ye Same afsoon as may be.
(139) Att a meeting of ye Brethren of ye Chh Aug. 19, 1781. Voted as follows vitz :
Whereas ye Commitee appointed to Examine ye Deacons accounts this year Apprehend yy were According to vote of ye Chh to have done it in ye month of June paft, but by some means omitted So to do. Therefore voted that ye Said Com- mittee be directed to Examine the Deacons accounts this year & report to ye Chh afsoon as may be.
Att a meeting of the Brethren of ye Chh June 24. 1782. Voted 1st That Capt. Stedman, Deacon Sewall, Deacon Hill, Timothy Tufts Efqr & M" James Munroe be a Committee for Infpecting ye manners of Profefsing Chriftians &c.
Voted 2ª That William Kneeland Efqr Mr Caleb Gannett, & Capt. Eben' Stedman be a Committee to Inquire into ye Chh Stock in ye Deacons Hands and to report ye State thereof to ye Brethren afsoon as may be.
