Lectures.

Library Hall has been used this year by the Teach- ers' Association, and by the library itself. The latter use was to introduce a course of lectures on "Food," to be given during January and February of 1913, by Miss Abell of the Providence Technical High School.

Reference Work.

The amount of reference work done this year. its quality, and the interest displayed in it by the workers in

270

ANNUAL REPORT

the library and by inquirers, justifies a special mention of the subject. If an attempt were made to give a list of the questions asked and answered, many pages would have to be added to this report. The subjects covered range from the request by telephone of how to spell a simple word, to the recommendation of young people's books suitable for translation, into foreign languages. Aside from strictly literary work, the practical business side of the reference work has been unusually emphasized. It is gratifying to feel that help in this direction is ex- pected of the library.

School Work.

Closely allied with the reference work, indeed a part of it, is the aid given to schools. We have found that in book review work for the High School, it is feasible to set aside a section of the shelves for that particular class of books and to collect there also the material most used as comment on them.

The library has furnished an unusual amount of ma- terial for debates and commencement work. This, it has given us pleasure to do for other schools than those be- longing immediately to the town.

The circulation of school books has increased from 12.213 to 14.320 : outlying schools, from 1.744 to 1,882.

Registration.

Total number of borrowers registered, December 31, 1912, 6,147. Cards no longer in use, 332. Borrowers using cards, 5.815. Number of new registrations during the year, 758.

Conclusion.

The library has been housed in its new building five years. It is not unsuitable to compare the statistics of the first year of that period with those of this last year.

ANNUAL REPORT

Accession, 1907-973 ; 869 purchase ; 42 gift.

Accessions, 1912-931 ; 700 purchase; 153 gift. Total number of volumes, 1907-9,600.

Total number of volumes, 1912-15,551.

Books lent, 1907-38,998; books lent, 1912-58, 118; a difference of 19,120 volumes. It is only fair to say that the library hours for lending books that year were seven for 286 days then, and 10 hours for 306 days this year. The circulation for 1906, 42,152 volumes, a difference of 15,966 volumes, is probably a fairer comparison.

The greatest gains in circulation have been in the classes of sociology, which has risen from .88% to 3.91% of the total circulation ; useful arts, from .73% to 2.21% ; fine arts, from .97% to 2.32%. Circulation in fiction has fallen from 81.87% to 75.31%, all of which figures indi- cate a growth in the right direction for a manufacturing town such as this is.

The activity of the library shows an advance, in pro- portion to its resources. It is to be expected that both will keep pace with the growth of the town.

Respectfully submitted,

EUGENIA M. HENRY,

Librarian.

ANNUAL REPORT

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES

The admirable report of the Librarian furnishes com- plete information as to the character and extent of the work accomplished in this department, and leaves but little for the Trustees to add.

There is one subject, however, that will soon be necessary to bring to the attention of the voters, and that is the smaller amount available each year for the pur- chase of new books. For several years it has been pos- sible to use about two thousand dollars from the annual appropriation for this purpose, but last year less than fourteen hundred dollars could be used. The marked in- crease in circulation means larger bills for rebinding, and more assistants at the library. so if there is to be that de- velopment and growth demanded by the public and de- sired by the officers, a larger appropriation must be made.

This year it will be necessary to make some repairs on the building at an estimated expense of two hundred dollars, and the Board desires that this amount should be added to the regular appropriation of seven thousand dollars.

The usual financial statements are appended.

Report of Building Committee

THACHER STREET SCHOOL HOUSE.

In accordance with the vote of the town, your com- mittee proceeded to erect an eight-room building on the lot purchased for school purposes on Thacher street, finishing the same as far as the appropriation would al- low. We found, after calling for bids, that we could prac- tically finish six of the eight rooms and furnish four, and we have worked along those lines. Contracts were let as follows :

General contract, Malcolm Currie, Attleboro. . $26,223.00 Heating and ventilating, Stone & Underhill.

Boston 2,062.00

Plumbing, N. Perry & Co., Atttleboro 1,700.50 Grading and walks. John Anderson, Attleboro 1,591.00 Furniture, American Seating Co., Boston 860.37 Curtains. G. A. Sweeney, Attleboro 75.00

In excavating for the cesspools (the sewer is not available in that locality). we encountered a ledge in which we were obliged to do a small amount of blasting, otherwise no ledge was encountered. The building is nearly completed and four of the rooms will be occupied early in the coming month, and we believe that we have as good a school building on Thacher street as any in town, complying with all the state laws and up to date in all particulars.

Below follows the expenditures to date (January Ist, 1913) :

Appropriation $35.000.00

O. S. Higgins, Architect. $1,500.00

NEW HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING.

Your Committee spent considerable time in the ar- rangement and details of this building before the con- tract was let. but early in the summer the general con- tract was let to Hooper. Waters Co. of Boston. and the heating and ventilating to Stone-Underhill Heating & Ventilating Co. of Boston. The general contract in- cludes the plumbing. wiring. grading. boiler house. stack and retaining wall.

The general contract is for. $136.702.00

Heating and ventilating 17.997.00

We were not satisfied with the financial standing of the general contractors at that time. so we arranged

with J. H. Gerlack of Boston to finance the job, besides requiring a bond for $50,000.

Ground was broken early in the summer and the work has been pushed as rapidly as possible. We were delayed a long time by the non-arrival of the steel, but on investigation we found that it was not through any fault of the contractors, and it was well into November before the large steel girders arrived, and since then work has gone forward more rapidly and we trust that the building will be ready to occupy by Sept. Ist, 1913.
