Report of the Tree Warden and Moth Inspector

To the Citizens of Attleborough : :

I herewith submit my first annual report as Tree War- den for the year ending Dec. 31, 1912. I trimmed trees on all the principal streets of the town, cutting the limbs that interfered with the electric lights and keeping the trees in good, uniform shape, using the greatest care to make good cuts and painting them with a good, heavy paint. I also cut all dead limbs that were a menace to public safety.

I removed twenty-two dead trees from the town high- ways and caused five others to be removed. I conferred with the State Highway Commission regarding a large tree on Pleasant street which will be removed and the expenses borne by the State. The financial statement is as follows :

William E. S. Smith, salary $50.00

William E. S. Smith, labor 174.50

John A. Richardson, labor 144.17

Charles Wilbur Jr., labor

ANNUAL REPORT

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE

To the Citizens of Attleborough :

The School Committee herewith submit the report of the educational department for the year ending De- cember 31, 1912.

We have endeavored to give the town the best pos- sible results for the money expended and have been able to keep within the appropriation made for our depart- ment.

The Tiffany School will be ready for occupancy early in January and four rooms will be opened with all grades below the High School, except the eighth, the pupils of which will continue to be transported to the center of the town. The four rooms will be filled nearly to their capacity, and we shall be obliged during the year to open one or two more rooms in that building, necessitating the employment of more teachers.

The ever increasing school attendance requires this department to ask a larger appropriation each year. This year the increase will be larger for several seasons. The new building on Thacher street will require more teachers and an increase in fuel. The opening of the new High School building in the fall will require an additional ap- propriation. The vote of the town requiring this depart- ment to pay for the water used will require at least $1,000.00, according to the estimate given us by the water department. The increase in teachers' salaries will re- quire a small amount, but that which has given us the most uneasiness is the notice given our chairman early in the winter, that the Parochial School on Maple street would be abandoned at the end of the school year, there- by requiring us to provide at once for nearly one hun- dred and seventy pupils, or practically four more rooms.

We have studied this question from all points, and while it means a large increase in the appropriation, if the building committee can complete the new High

School building by the opening of the fall term in Sep- tember so as to make the old High School building avail- able for grade purposes, we shall be able to house this un- looked-for, as well as the usual increase of attendance. Should the old building not be available at that time we shall probably be obliged to put some of the lower grades on half time till the new building is ready for the High School pupils. We would urge the building committee, as far as it is in their power, to assist us in this matter.

We have been carefully over the figures and esti- mates and recommend that the sum of $89,000.00, together with the receipts and dog fund be appropriated for this department for 1913.

Respectfully submitted,
