The force at present numbers 323 men as follows: The chief, two deputy chiefs, six district chiefs, supt. of division of fire alarm telegraph, one asst. supt. of division of fire alarm telegraph, supt. of division of repairs, one asst. to supt. of division of repairs, 21 °captains, 22 lieutenants, one book- keeper, one clerk, 265 men; also the force at the United States Armory in case of emergency. One company located at Indian Orchard is not available for city fires. The whole apparatus of the department at present consists of eight chiefs' cars, three auxiliary squad cars, two motor
runabouts, and one motor truck for fire alarm use, five motor pumping engines, fourteen motor driven hose wagons, eight motor driven hook and ladder trucks, one water tower, two runa- bouts, thirty-five thousand four hundred feet of two and one-half inch cotton rubber-lined hose, five thousand one hundred fifty feet of three- quarter inch rubber chemical hose, forty-three hand fire extinguishers, sixteen sleighs; fire alarm telegraph and telephone apparatus. The United States Armory equipment, consisting of one motor driven combination hose and chem- ical car, and one thousand feet of good cotton rubber-lined hose, may, by courtesy of the com- mandant, be called into service in an emergency. The works are in charge of a Board of Water Com- missioners, consisting of Edwin A. Blodgett, chairman; Dr. George L. Fenn, Mayor Edwin F. Leonard, ex officio; Howard M. King, supt .; Leland G. Carlton, asst. supt .; Alfred R. Hatha- way, clerk and water registrar; Elbert E. Loch- ridge, chief engineer. Office, (319) City Hall. Service Building and Yard, 71 Colton. Office hours, 9 a m to 5 pm; Saturdays, 9 a m to 12 m. Telephones: (applications and information), River 6100 (work and trouble calls, day or night), River 6800. The supply of water is taken from the Westfield Little River watershed, situated principally in the towns of Blandford, Granville, and Russell, and by means of the fol- lowing storage structures :-

The former supply from impounding reservoirs in Ludlow and Belchertown is also retained at present for town of Ludlow and for emergency uses, and, with its storage capacity of 1,434,218,- 000 gallons, makes an aggregate available stor- age capacity of 4,030,518,000 gallons.
