The Springfield Hospital-North Chestnut cor. Springfield. Incorporated Dec. 24, 1883. On Nov. 14, 1886, Dorcas Chapin, widow of Chester W. Chapin, died bequeathing to the corporation $25,000 upon the conditions that a like sum should be contributed, and that the city of Spring- field should give to this corporation its hospital and equipments. On Jan. 17, 1887, William Merrick of Springfield died, making this corpora- tion his residuary legatee. In April, 1887, by popular subscription the sum of $28,444.96 was raised, and in Oct., 1887, the city of Springfield

The Library is located on State above Chestnut, and open week days from 9 a m to 9 p m, Sun- days, from 2 to 6 p m (fiction department closed) holidays, except Thanksgiving, Christmas and the Fourth of July, from 10 a m to 9 p m (fiction and children's departments closed). The period- ical reading room, well supplied with American and foreign magazines, reviews and newspapers, is open week days from 9 a m to 10 p m, holi- days from 10 a m to 10 p m, Sundays from 2 to 10 p. m. The number of volumes in the library is about 300,000, exclusive of unbound pam- phlets. Residents of Springfield and non-resi- dents employed in the city are entitled to draw books, on agreeing to conform to the regulations; other non-residents, by paying $1 per year.
Card holders may take any reasonable number of fiction or other books at one time, for periods of two, four or six weeks. New works of fiction are restricted to one week.
The use of the Library on the premises is free to all.

The Catharine L. Howard Memorial Library of Science-Science Building, State. A memorial to Catharine L. Howard, who for many years conducted The Howard School for Girls, now known as the MacDuffie School. Part of a sum of about five thousand dollars, raised by the alum- nae, was expended in fitting up the library, and income from the remainder is used in purchasing new books. In the selection of books, great care has been taken to meet the needs of students in the subjects of geology, physical geography, zoology, botany, and astronomy.
