pipe; but in every case of connection with a soil-pipe such connection shall be above the up- per fixture of the building.


SECT. 9. Waste-pipes from refrigerators, or other receptacles in which provisions are stored, shall not be connected with a drain, soil-pipe or other waste-pipe, unless such waste-pipes are provided with traps, suitably ventilated; and in every case there shall be an open tray between the trap and refrigerator.


SECT. 10. Pipes and other fixtures shall not be covered or concealed from view until after the work has been examined by the said Board, and the plumber shall notify said Board when the work is sufficiently advanced for inspection.


SECT. 11. No steam-exhaust shall be connect- ed with any soil or waste-pipe or drain which communicates with a public sewer.


SECT. 12. A grease-trap shall be placed under the sink of every hotel, restaurant, eating-house or other public cooking establishment.


SECT. 13. For every license granted under the provisions of this ordinance there shall be paid to the clerk of the Board of Health the sum of one dollar for the use of the city.


SECT. 14. All previous ordinances, rules and regulations inconsistent herewith are hereby re- pealed. Passed Nov. 21, 1887.

TERMS AND VACATIONS.


The school year commences on the first Monday in September, and is divided into four terms, comprising forty weeks, and commencing respectively on the first Monday in September; the Monday after Thanksgiving; the last Monday in February ; and the first Monday in May.


The annual examination is made at the close of the Summer term, and pro- motions are made at that time.


The vacations in all the schools are nine weeks preceding the first Monday in September; after Wednesday noon Thanksgiving week; from Christmas to New Year's, both inclusive; one week preceding the last Monday in February ; and one week preceding the first Monday in May.


NO SCHOOL SIGNAL .- The signal for "no school for the rest of the day" is 3-3-3 struck on the fire-alarm bells, and repeated four times, at either 7.55 A. M., or 1.15 P. M.


The age at which pupils, when qualified, generally enter the various grades is as follows :

SALARIES OF TEACHERS.


The salary of teachers in the High, Suburban, and the Evening schools and of principals of Grammar schools is given immediately after the name of the teacher.


There are three grades of salary for assistants in the schools below the High School: Minimum, $500; medium, $550; maximum, $600.


Teachers on trial are paid at the rate of $450. Graduates of the Normal Schools of the State, and teachers who have had two or more years suc- cessful experience in teaching in good schools, may begin with the lowest regular salary of $500.

The object of the Institute is to furnish a training school for young men, in which they can obtain an education in the branches not usually taught in high schools and academies, combined with practical instruction in mechanical and scientific pursuits. The student is thoroughly drilled in the scientific part of the trade or profession he proposes to follow, inculcated by the prac- tical application, from day to day, in the machine shop or laboratories of the scientific facts obtained from books or lectures. It is intended that any graduate from the department of mechanics shall be fitted to assume the responsibility of superintending any department of mechanical work to which he has turned his attention, and to understand not only its practical details, but also its scientific principles.


Any graduate from the department of civil engineering shall be qualified to do any work required of civil engineers, and any chemist or designer shall be ready for work required of him. Conditions of admission : Knowledge of the common English branches, algebra, plane geometry, and French.


Instruction free to residents of Worcester County. To others $150 a year. The school year is divided into two terms. Number of students 160. In- struction given by recitations, practice, and lectures.


RECITATIONS .- The classes recite in small divisions, and time enough is . allotted to each recitation to secure the utmost thoroughness. The adjust- ment of the different elements in the course of study, and the time assigned to each are set forth in the hour plan.


PRACTICE .- At the middle of the junior year each student, who has not. previously determined his course, chooses a department, under the advice of the instructors, and from this time to the end of the course devotes to it his practice time of ten hours each week, and a part of the month of July; the mechanical engineers in the shop, the civil engineers in the field, and the chemists in the laboratory. All the students are required to attend these exercises. Beginners in mechanics are required to enter the school a half year in advance of others.
