Worcester District Medical Soci- ety .- Org. 1804, as a subordinate so- ciety, under the Mass. Medical Soci- ety. The elements of this district or- ganization have been in existence un- der another form since 1794. Pres., J. Marcus Rice, Worcester; Vice- Pres., George Brown, Barre; Sec., W. C. Stevens, Worcester; Treas., S. B. Woodward, Worcester; Librarian, Albert C. Getchell, Worcester. Offi- cers elected at the annual meeting, second Wednesday in May. The Library of the Worcester District Medical Society was commenced in 1788, by the gift of "fifty pounds value in books," by Dr. Elijah Dix, of Worcester. It has since been largely increased by donations from physi- cians, and by the income of $6,000 bequeathed for the purpose by Hon. Daniel Waldo, and of $500 bequeathed by C. W. Wilder, and of $1000 be- queathed by Harrison Bliss, Esq. It contains about 5,000 volumes of the best medical and surgical works, to which additions are constantly made, and which may be consulted by citi- zens at the rooms only, in exchange for which privilege the city furnishes a room for the library in the Public Library building.

All members of the Association who are injured are to receive assistance from the Fund, the amount not to ex- ceed $10 a week, and in all cases to be regulated by the Board of Direc- tors. Injuries resulting from immoral conduct and dissipation do not entitle a member to assistance. Honorary members may be elected by the Board of Directors, but none are elegible to active membership who are not mem- bers of the Worcester Fire Depart- ment, and Worcester Protective De- partment, and regularly appointed substitutes. Meets at Chief Engi- neer's office, 10 Bigelow ct. Meetings of directors, the first Tuesday in Jan- uary, April, July and October. An- nual meeting for election of officers, the second Monday of January.

The dispensary is open daily from 10 to 11 A. M., Sun- days and legal holidays excepted. Visits made at any time for which orders may be left as above.

This soci- ety was united with the Young Men's Library Association in 1856, under the name of the Lyceum and Library As- sociation. In 1866 it was incorporated under the name of the Worcester Ly- ceum and Natural History Associa- tion. Without endowment and with a limited income, the society has been enabled to do its special educational work during the past nine years through the generosity of teachers, who have given their services with- out pay, and by the liberality of many citizens, who have from year to year aided it by their subscriptions. Pub- lic meetings are held the second Sat- urday of each month. At these meetings papers upon scientific sub- jects are read, by members and others, and all interested are cordially invited to attend, whether members of the society or not. Field meetings are held from time to time. The society has a large and well arranged collec- tion of specimens in natural history, the local collection from Worcester County being of special value. Do- nations are solicited. Classes are formed in Botany, Mineralogy, Orni- thology, Microscopy, Mollusca, &c., to which members are admitted free of charge. The Museum of the So- ciety is open free to all, daily, from 9 A. M. to 5 P. M., with a custodian in charge, ready to exhibit the collec- tions, answer inquiries, and assist students and amateurs in their inves- 1
