NEWSPAPERS.

The Valorcester

One of the very oldest newspapers established in America, the oldest newspaper in Massachusetts, and competent judges say, one of the best. The first piece of printing issued in Worcester was a copy of the Spy. This was in 1775. The publisher of the Spy was Isaiah Thomas, the patriot, and the founder of Antiquarian Hall in this city. He had been printing the Spy in Boston for five years, and had made it so conspicu- ously the advocate of freedom and liberty for America, as to incur the hostility of the royalists. Like Samuel Adams and John Hancock, he was singled out by the instru- ments of British tyranny to be "disciplined." He left Boston one night in the early Summer of 1775, and set up his press in Worcester, and the Spy has been published here without interruption since that day. Notwithstanding the fact that Its His- tory Covers More than One Hundred and Eighteen Years, it has in all that time had substantially but three publishers-Isaiah Thomas, John Milton Earle, and John D. Baldwin & Sons. During all this period, embracing the entire history of this republic, it has ever been the stout defender of civil and religious liberty, the champion of the oppressed, the advocate of the anti-slavery movement in America, and the resolute opposer of all forms of narrow and bigoted knownothing- ism. The Spy is to-day faithful to its old traditions and also aims to give all the relia- ble news of the City, which it had an important hand in building, the State which it did so much to make free and independent, and the Republic which it helped to create and has for so many years defended. More than this, it to-day does what was impos- sible to do one hundred or even twenty-five years ago-gives every morning a reliable summary of the important events that happened yesterday everywhere in the civilized world. The Spy does not pander to depraved tastes, nor attempt to give baseless rumors for facts, nor seek to make the most conspicuous and important feature of its columns criminal episodes of life. It aims to give all the reliable news without fear or favor, and to be in all respects worthy of the welcome which it has had for these hundred years in the homes of Worcester and Central Massachusetts.

WHAT OTHERS SAY.

The city of Worcester owes a large debt to that bright, clean, progressive journal, the Spy, which has for so long a time worked for the welfare of the city and of the Commonwealth .- [Hartford Courant.

The Journal has too long been the neighbor and friend to the Spy not to rejoice in the prosperity which it so thoroughly deserves by enterprise, reliability, and all that goes to maintain the high standard of provincial journalism, which in more than one instance sets a worthy example to that of the great cities .- [Providence Journal.

The Spy has for many years enjoyed the reputation of being one of the best conducted. papers in the State .- [Boston Journal.

The Worcester Spy deserves every bit of the success it enjoys. It is a sound, reliable newspaper. -[Boston Globe.

The Worcester Spy, one of the most able, discreet and judicious of Massachusetts journals, is an honor and a benefit to the community in which it is published .- [Salem Gazette.

The Spy is one of the best papers in this State .- [Boston Advertiser.

The Spy is one of the best papers in the country .- [Lowell Mail.

The Spy is a first-rate paper every way .- [Lowell Courier.

The Worcester Spy is perhaps the most creditable example of republican journalism in Massa- chusetts .- [Hartford Times.

One of the largest manufacturers of New England wrote as follows: The Daily Spy gives me all the essential news of the world in better shape than any other daily.

An eminent divine of St. Louis says: I do not believe you in Worcester know fully how good a paper you possess in the Spy. It is positively the best paper in the country.

A good mother in Kansas writes: We couldn't live without the Spy. It is positively the best paper I see, and I read many.

A distinguished statesman and a member of the U. S. Senate says: The influence of such a journal as the Spy for good in any city is incalculable.

An artist writes from Boston: I daily find in the Spy words that give me new courage, and I fully appreciate its elevating tendency.
