At the Hayward St. ground a new type of rag rug was inaugurated. Three rugs having been finished for the exhibit. All the work was displayed over the week-end of the 17th of August in the window of Mullen's Furni- ture Co., on Main St., with favorable comment by towns- people.
Prizes for the work were awarded at the Field Day held on Town Park on Saturday, August 17. At this occasion field events for boys and girls were held and medals and theatre passes awarded to winners. The an- nual baby contest was also held on this date. An impres- sive and decorative feature of the Field day was a patri- otic drill performed by ten girls selected from all the playgrounds and coached by Miss Casasanta. Miss Morey designed and made the red, white and blue cos- tumes in which the team appeared.
The baseball players were grateful to the Board for the opportunity to see the Red Sox's big league game which they attended in Boston on August 19.
In order to broaden and vary the scope of education for the children an excursion to interesting places in Bos- ton was conducted on the afternoon of August 20. As this trip was completely free of charge it was a reward for those who had exhibited the best work made during the season. The group numbering thirty-five including instructors visited the Museum of Fine Arts, the Chris- tian Science Publishing House and the Public Gardens where everyone enjoyed a ride on the traditional swan boats. On the way home the bus stopped at Howard Johnson's for hot dogs and ice cream.
The following day closed the season for 1940 with the annual excursion to Lake Pearl. Eight buses carried the
156
children and several mothers to the Park where they en- joyed field events, swimming, boating, and a basket lunch.
The staff is proud of the fact that through the help of friends, who donated time and material and the untir- ing efforts of the children combined with their own, all money expended in projects, for prizes, and for the free excursion to Boston, was raised by the playground. This was accomplished by the instructors (girls) making pieces of handiwork which were given away, tickets being sold by the children, also at Field Day tags were sold and a percentage of the profit on the refresh- ment concession obtained.
As one of the supervisors, I wish to express my thanks to the Board for their whole-hearted interest and consid- eration throughout the season and to commend the staff most sincerely for their cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
LOUISE MOREY, Supervisor of Playgrounds.

REPORT OF THE LIBRARY TRUSTEES
The Trustees of the Milford Town Library submit the following report for the year 1940:
There has been an almost negligible decrease in the circulation of books for the year but it may be discounted as a drop in the ordinary course of circulation.
The Trustees accepted with deep regret the resigna- tion of Mrs. Dorothy O'Donnell, supervisor of the Period- ical and Reference Department, in July of this year. Mrs. O'Donnell has served in this capacity for a number of years, her work has been most satisfactory and effi- cient and the Trustees desire to express their sincere appreciation for the excellent service rendered by Mrs. O'Donnell in the department. Miss Cecilia M. Wallace was appointed assistant librarian to fill the vacancy caused by Mrs. O'Donnell's resignation and Miss Ange- lina Bevilacqua was appointed part-time assistant.
The Board wishes to gratefully acknowledge all dona- tions made by individuals and organizations during the past year.
May the Board respectfully call attention to the Librarian's report which describes in detail the entire scope of library activity for the year 1940.
Respectfully submitted, STEPHEN H. REYNOLDS, Chairman, Board of Trustees.

Report of the Inspector of Wires
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen :
The work of the year 1940 has covered a great range of activities, difficult to report in detail.
A moderate amount of new building has called for some strictly new wiring.
A large amount of change-over work, converting single or two family houses into apartment houses for three to six families has been added to a less amount of this type of building of new construction.
I am pleased to report that the condition of wiring of business blocks has continued to improve to provide for increased safety and modern demands for lighting and power.
The installation of oil burner and stoker equipment has continued at a good rate and new rules of the State Fire Marshal have provided for further safeguards.
