In the High School an improved cafeteria has been installed and this additional facility shall be in operation shortly after the first of next year.
In order to establish the cafeteria it has been neces- sary to move lockers, redecorate three rooms, install new flooring, paint corridor floors, break through a wall, in-
239
stall improved lighting and connect water, gas, electri- city, and sewerage for sinks, stoves, dishwater, refrig- erator, and other equipment necessary to the operation of a modern cafeteria.
Most of the equipment to be used has been obtained either from grants by the Community School Lunch Pro- gram or by purchase from profits accumulated in the old cafeteria over a period of several years.
As a result of the planning and effort expended this year it appears that the pupils of the High, Junior High, Spruce, and Park Schools will be provided with the faci- lities of a hot lunch program for years to come.
In the Stacy Junior High building a new set of anti- slip stair treads has been installed on the 42 steps leading from the basement to the top floor on the boys' (west) side of the building.
The slate roof on the Spruce Street School was re- paired with new open copper valleys being installed to replace the closed type valleys where leaks had been occurring.
At both the South and Plains Schools, a spare class- room was converted into a gymnasium, by removing desks and chairs, sanding the floors, installing wire guards on windows, erecting backboards and baskets and raising the light fixtures. These rooms together with the Lynch Auditorium are used for Physical Education classes in grades four, five, and six.
At the Plains School the play yard on the northeast side of the building was shaped up, graded and a large dry well installed to drain the area. Then a hard surface was installed making a wonderful play yard for the children of the school and neighborhood. Mr. Edward C. Carroll, Highway Surveyor, and his department aided us tremen- dously with this project and his assistance and coopera- tion are appreciated sincerely in the school department.
240
A new cement walk on the front or south side of the Plains School was installed and two grass plots were seeded between the new walk and the building. Now access to the building is improved and the appearance of the site has been enhanced as well.
At the Oliver Street School a new walk was in- stalled on the north and east side of the building replac- ing the old walk which was broken and presented a haz- ardous and unsightly situation.
A new asphalt shingle roof together with gutters and down spouts were installed at the Park School replacing the wooden roof which was leaking and in a bad state of repair.
At the Chapin Street School, in addition to the painting mentioned previously, a new metallic roof was installed over the boiler room entrance, gutters were re- placed and dry wells dug to provide for drainage of water from the roof the building.
The West Street School was repaired last September and in order to make it available for occupancy, new walks were installed, the lawn loamed and seeded, floors scrubbed and sealed and the heating and plumbing sys- tems reconditioned.
The foregoing constitutes a rough statement of the major work accomplished at the various school sites dur- ing the year 1949. Many minor items of repair and rou- tine maintenance accomplished by our custodial force are omitted from this report for the sake of economy of space.
As stated in previous reports the maintenance, re- pair and modernization of the various school properties is a tremendous task. Everything cannot be done at once. I believe that it will take another three or four years to put your school property into a reasonably good, safe and modern condition.
241
It appears to me that common sense and sound busi- ness principles dictate the wisdom of proper attention to the maintenance and repair of school property. I pro- pose to continually devote myself to the task of putting the school property in the best possible condition to the greater end that the learning process may proceed in a wholesome, healthy, and uplifting physical environment.

Report of the Milford Town Library
The Trustees of the Milford Town Library submit the following report for the year 1949.
The facilities of the Library have been increased dur- ing the past year with the addition and replacement of reference facilities and the purchase of books suitable for general circulation. It is the hope of the Trustees that this policy can continue to bring the needed increase of volumes and service to a standard suitable for a com- munity with the Library demands consistent with a town of Milford's population size.
Mr. Henry J. Pyne was elected Librarian Dec. 8, 1949 and assumed his duties Dec. 27, 1949. Mr. Pyne's report presents a detailed appraisal of the Library facilities and use and has practical and progressive suggestions for Library improvement.
The Trustees express their appreciation to the mem- bers of the staff, Miss Cecilia Wallace, Mrs. Alice Morgan and Mrs. Grace Rooney for cooperative assistance and interest during the past year.

There can be found in the Reading Room a magazine list that we feel will satisfy the interests of all ages and of varied interests and backgrounds.
Number of books per catalogue 1949 24,051
Number of books added during 1949 776
Number of books withdrawn during 1949 336

We would like to see the Library more widely accept- ed by the people of Milford as an active influence in the Community. In the coming year, by means of a closer liaison with the school system, a developed and expanded program devoted to the smaller age groups, we hope to exert this influence. The establishing of the Dewey Decimal System and the Modified Newark Charging Sys- tem would be the high point in the progress of your Library service.

Report of the Milford Athletic Field Committee
To the Voters of Milford :
We told you, in the March Town Meeting, that we would complete the planned construction of Fino Field during 1949. This has been done and we feel that our field is now adequate and satisfactory for the baseball and football needs of Milford.
Trend of sports events is generally toward evening and night games, and our records clearly show that the Milford public favors such timing.
255
Most of the Blackstone Valley League games of 1949 were played under lights. In our case these were portable lights which were inadequate but as good as could be pro- cured in a movable system.
Lighting of sports events is, in our opinion, a func- tion of the organization sponsoring those events because it is solely for their convenience and profit. For this rea- son we do not favor town financed lighting.
We expect to offer, at the Town Meeting of 1950, a plan for adequate Fino Field lighting to be financed by a Town of Milford bond issue. This bond issue to be so set up that it would retire one bond each year for 10 years, out of the proceeds of night sports events.
Under our program, and with expected patronage, the cost of the lighting system, its operation and the op- eration of Fino Field would never be charged into any tax levy except to the extent that money had been received by the Town Treasurer from field earnings.
Fino Field Annex continues to be a much used and very satisfactory project.
Soft-ball competition is very keen and many games are played here each week. It is also extensively used for football, both for practice and for J. V. games.
Sabotage or rowdyism has been almost non-existent and we greatly appreciate the co-operation of the users of both of our field facilities.
The Fino Field Parking Area has developed into an ideal, and much used, auto driving training area both for the High School classes and for the public use.
We appreciate, and desire to publicly thank, the Fire Department, Highway Department, Police Department,
256
the Selectmen and the various athletic organizations for their assistance and advice without which our job would be very much harder.
W. E. CORBETT, Chairman, BATISTA VITALINI, Secretary. Milford Athletic Field Committee.
