The teacher has presided over this school for a number of years, putting forth unceasing effort for the advancement of her pupils. The interest manifested by her has been appreciated by the parents and scholars, and in return they have given their hearty co-operation.
The closing examination was characterized by good reading, spelling, and promptness in answering Arithmetical and Geo- graphical questions. Honorable mention should be made of Lucia B. Harlow, who has not been absent from school but six days for seven and a half years, and then detained by sickness. This is a noble record. Teacher-Ella L. Ford.

The teacher who presided over this school the past year has been employed by the District for eight years, with the exception of one term, and the result of her efforts the last year demonstrates the truth that, when a teacher is doing the real work of a teacher, the true interests of the school demand that no change should be made. The plan adopted by the teacher of giving " Monthly Re- ports " to her pupils, has resulted very favorably. It has stimu- lated them to make unusual effort to excel in their studies ; also tended to make them watchful and careful in regard to their de- portment. Thus the teacher gained two important results : first, increasing the interest ; and secondly, perfecting the discipline of the school by that interest. The " Monthly Reports " were placed in the hands of the Chairman of the Committee every month ; and to encourage the pupils a pledge was given that those who excelled should be noticed in the School Report.
The whole number of scholars in the winter was thirty-seven ; we present twenty-five names with their lessons and the result.

CONDITION OF THE SCHOOLS.
The Committee in visiting the schools the past year have endeavored to ascertain their real condition, and counsel and en- courage both teachers and scholars. In some Districts teachers and pupils labor with discouragements that ought not to exist. In some localities the school houses are a very great bar to the im- provement of the schools. Old and young are affected more or less by their surroundings. If children are crowded into a small room, surrounded with dark and gloomy walls, and compelled to sit on seats which cramp and almost cripple them, their patience and power of endurance must be very great, if they are the quiet obedient pupils the teachers desire. In some Districts but little interest is manifested by the parents. Generally, children are in- terested in what interests their parents. If they are not careful and particular that their children should be regular and prompt in their attendance, or if they do not counsel them in regard to their behavior, and seek to impress their minds with the importance of improving their time and opportunity,-what will be the result ?
Children reason, and often plausibly, if not correctly. In this case, generally, they decide, our parents are but little interested in this matter ; they are older and know more than we do, and it will make but little difference whether we obtain an education or
13
not. There must be deep feeling, earnest and energetic action on the part of parents, before our schools will be what they ought and may be.
But your Committee rejoice to know that there are encouraging features. Some parents are interested, and commendable efforts are put forth to advance the interests of their children. As a whole the schools have been in a better condition the past year than the preceding.
Permit your Committee to join with your children in asking an improvement in the school houses. Make them sufficiently large and commodious. It will greatly encourage the " little folks," if you will give them pleasant, well seated school-rooms. They will pay you abundantly. It is one of the best investments you can make.
CHANGE OF READING BOOKS.
It was announced in the last year's School Report that the reading books would be changed : substituting Hillard's for Sar- gent's. That change has been effected ; giving to the children about one hundred dollars worth of new books for old ones ; a majority of the old were worthless, except their value as old paper. The Committee regard the new books as good ones, and calculated to promote the interests of the schools. In our opinion we find we are not alone, as we learn the School Committees of Boston, Cambridge, Plymouth and Kingston have adopted them.
