At the present time, inter-class basketball for approximately 200 boys and 140 girls has been scheduled; twenty-eight teams (boys) and eighteen (girls) teams are playing basketball once a week and as in the past, all details are organized by the physical directors with student leaders assisting in the administration of the schedule.
The high school gymnastic team is as popular an activity as any chosen by the students in school and at this writing both the boys and girls' teams are practicing in preparation for the eighth annual exhibition. This is to be presented in April and all proceeds benefit the athletic injury fund of the high school. Last year about seventy- five students participated in the exhibition and in addition gave a demonstration for the crippled children at the Canton Children's Hospital. The boys' team competed in four gymnastic meets-inter- class, Holbrook High, M. I. T. Freshmen and the State Gym Meet held at Lynn and enjoyed a successful season.
The tests for the detection of such pupils who have a hearing loss was continued again this year with the use of the 4-A audio- meter, loaned through the courtesy of the Boston Guild for the Hard of Hearing. The tests, while revealing startling results, are grati- fying in their accomplishments, as parents and pupils are becoming conscious of the need for correction in order that they may enjoy
136
the educational benefits offered by our schcools. The first hearing test was given to 510 pupils from the third grade through high school and the results necessitated a second test for 140 of the same group. Of this number, a total of 61 pupils showed a need for con- sultation with an ear specialist as the result of the hearing loss indi- cated by the tests. Many of this group are under the care of a spe- cialist and have shown some improvement this year, but several in- dicated a hearing loss through the tests which had not heretofore been discovered. Proper seating arrangement for these pupils in their class rooms, and special attention on the part of the teacher will aid greatly in the retardation problem.
The grade school physical education program continues on a progressive basis, with emphasis placed on the formal exercises in each lesson and a game program adapted to the group, with partici- pation by large numbers. The monthly syllabus placed in the hands of each teacher offers a weekly outline of activity which may be con- ducted during the usual physical education periods. The co-opera- tion of Superintendent Fisher, the Principals and Teachers in. the schools has greatly aided us in presenting a successful program.
In conclusion, we wish to state that the results of the physical fitness tests in the high school indicate a very high average in com- parison with other schools. throughout the State. It is undoubtedly the result of the active program conducted for the grade school pupils and reflected in the individual results obtained from these tests in high school. The high physical fitness average indicates a program which provides an opportunity for the children of the Braintree schools to keep physically fit for the daily routine of their school life.
Respectfully submitted, ELLSWORTH R. THWING ALICE E. DAUGHRATY Physical Directors.
REPORT OF THE SCHOOL NURSE
December 31, 1936.
Mr. C. Edward Fisher,
Superintendent of Schools,
Braintree, Massachusetts.
Dear Sir:
Please allow me to submit my eighth annual report on the health work that is being done in the schools of Braintree.
Dr. Sullivan, Dr. Ross and Dr. Woodruff examined the school children htis year. The High School physical examinations this year took more time as the students were examined for hernia - three were found.
The test for tuberculosis was given in the Junior, Freshman and in all of the seventh grades on January 6, 1936. The arms were read January 9, 1936 and the X-rays were taken on January 16, 1936.
137
The same test was given to about four hundred sixty again on December 8 and the arms were read on December 11.
Miss Muriel Rogers, of the Penniman School, won the Philergian prize of $2.50 for the best essay written on "Mothercraft." She also won the third prize from the State Federation of Women's Clubs, which was $2.00. One hundred seven essays were written.
The new urinals which have been installed at the Hollis School are a great improvement over the old ones.
I wish to thank our Superintendent, Principals, and all connected with the School Department for their co-operation. Also, I would like to thank the Welfare Department for their help.
Respectfully submitted, MARY E. COLLINS, R. N. School Nurse.
REPORT OF THE SUPERVISOR OF ATTENDANCE
December 31, 1936.
Mr. C. Edward Fisher,
Superintendent of Schools,
Braintree, Massachusetts.
Dear Sir:
Another year has closed; a year of growth and progress in the Braintree School Department, but to me one year more of enlight- enment and added knowledge gained by experience and contacts.
The thought uppermost in this year's review seems to be an un- answered question,-How many more broken families can we have here without involving serious trouble and court records for a great many of our innocent young children ?
In the early fall an invitation came from Judge Kenneth John- son to attend the district conference of social service workers at Quincy. Representatives of the various agencies doing social service work in Brockton and Quincy cited specific difficult cases that were typical of their respective areas. They revealed very startling con- ditions, but I could think, as I listened, of just as difficult a case in our own Braintree to match every story told. They explained how they mobilized their agencies and together reached some sort of a plan of procedure.
I am grateful that we too have the privilege of calling on the Probation Office in Quincy, the Massachusetts Society for the Pre- vention of Cruelty to Children, the Red Cross, and The Salvation Army to help us do the best thing for our problem cases.
In general, parents do not realize that the law requires their children to attend school if within certain age limits. The parents feel that they can send children shopping or working for a day or two without permission of any one; that they can keep the oldest child at home to tend pre-school age children, or even loan their child to tend baby in the next house so the neighbor can attend movies or church services.
138
There are very few families who know about the work permits for various ages and their requirements, that must be issued by the School Department office before a minor can be ligitimately em- ployed. Previously I felt the parents knew the law and were trying to evadie it, but the majority are not aware of these rules.
The best method so far (and Mr. Joseph O'Brien and his faithful assistants in the Probation Office in Quincy are hereby thanked pub- licly) is to have the facts which I need to have impressed woven into a letter sent directly to the home from that office. This clears all doubt as to the reason for my persistent home calls and parents see the facts in a new light.
This service is priceless, and added to that we have also to be grateful to the willing representative of the M. S. P. C. C., Miss Thomas, for her time spent in calls at homes of our mentally deficient chi dren, investigations, arranging for psychiatry tests and the proper placing of these children, where with special training they are given every opportunity for development in order to become, if possible, self-supporting citizens.
The local clothing and shoe troubles are very much diminished, showing that times generally are better. I have had less than twenty calls as compared to over a hundred by December of last year. I only supply families who are not on the welfare. Again this year the women of Braintree who serve the Red Cross have donated their time and labor in the making of approximately one hundred knitted sweaters, mittens and caps. I have personally fitted and place most of them in deserving "school" homes in Braintree.
The co-operation of parents, as well as the school children, has been quite remarkable, and it is a source of satisfaction to be so wel- come in every home, even after court action in a few cases has taken one of the family away from home temporarily.
Parents do appreciate results and are quick to show their grati- tude always and I to reciprocate have tried unceasingly to see the many different viewpoints in these very different homes as well as the school viewpoint in every singly interview.
Respectfully submitted,
F. LILLIE WALKER.
