Report of the School Committee
January 14, 1946
TO THE CITIZENS OF BRAINTREE:
The year just past has been a busy one for the School Com- mittee, during which we have conscientiously endeavored to administer the affairs of the department in a manner which would, first and foremost, give the children of Braintree every possible educational advantage; secondly, to offer a broad physical education program; third, to offer each person in the department the help and incentive to give of his best; and fourth, to ever bear in mind that we are the trustees of the future citizens of the town and to live up to the challenge of such a trust.
1945 has seen the adoption of a salary schedule for our classroom teachers, which schedule is the result of many hours of work and cooperation between the School Committee and the teachers. We feel that the schedule offers many advantages and will result in better teaching and a more complete understanding between teachers, super- visors, and the School Committee, all of which works to the advantage of the children and taxpayers as well.
During the past year, and only after careful study, it was deemed advisable to augment our maintenance department in order to accom- plish a maximum of repairs and renovations. The results were so satisfactory that a similar program is contemplated for 1946. We feel very strongly that our request for $30,000.00 for maintenance purposes, which sum is based on approximately 2% of our property valuation of $1,662,000.00 should again be approved and that with this sum of money, our maintenance program can be continued with success.
We urge immediate action on the part of the Town in appropriat- ing $100,000.00 to be added to the $250,000.00 already appropriated so that construction of the High School addition may be started this summer. We have also filed with the Long-Range Planning Committee our request for funds to erect two new Junior High Schools; to convert our auditoriums into gymnasiums, including shower installations; to prepare school playgrounds so that each section of the town will offer its children safe places in which to play; and finally the replacement of the two wooden buildings which have served the town for so many years. All of the foregoing program is to be accomplished over a ten- year period.
During the latter months of 1945, much thought has been given to a successor to Mr. C. Edward Fisher, who will retire at the end of. May, 1946, after 25 years of faithful and conscientious service to the town of Braintree.

We would direct your attention to the report of the Superinten- dent which follows, and which gives in detail the activities of the department.
To the personnel of the School Department we extend our sin- cere thanks for the faithful service which has enabled the schools of Braintree to rank among the highest in scholastic standing.
A report of this nature would not be complete without a tribute to the members of our staff who have been serving their country in the Armed Forces. It is with a great deal of pleasure that we greet those who have returned, and an assurance to those who are still serving, that the welcome which awaits them is hearty and sincere. We pay especial tribute to one whose name is represented by a gold star on our service flag-Lieutenant Donald E. Ross-who gave his life on the field of battle. A good teacher, a splendid young man, and an example for all who came in contact with him. May we, as a memorial, adopt in our own lives those attributes which made him a young man about whom we say "The world is a better place because he lived in it."
Respectfully submitted,
G. RALPH YOUNG, Chairman ALIDA N. STEVENS, Recording Secretary HOWARD B. BLEWETT ARCHIE T. MORRISON SOPHIE G. BLUNT ELMER G. DERBY

Report of the Superintendent of Schools
January 14, 1946
To the School Committee:
In making this annual report for the year 1945, I am omitting, as has been the policy for the past several years, many of the statis- tical tables that earlier in my administration were considered so im- portant. I feel, however, that 1945 was a year of considerable ac- complishment under new, varying and unpredictable circumstances.
Our greatest problem this year has been in maintaining adequate teaching personnel and in securing replacements for the inevitable turnover that occurs annually, in addition to substitutes with train- ing and experience for those teachers (17 in number) who were away in the Armed Services.
