While the number of deaths has been large, it has been with those weighted by the debility and weakness incident to old age, and not from lack of proper food, or from want of proper nursing.

The increase in the number of inmates has been less than was expected at the beginning of the year, and is smaller than might be expected from the general condition of the country; this indicates that actual poverty has increased but little, if any, in the agricul- tural towns.

It will be remembered that there are now six towns in the Asso- ciation instead of four, as in the first two years.

It is hardly probable that the weekly expense can be much, if at all, reduced in the future. The just and humane spirit of the day is more and more exacting in the management and equipment of all charitable institutions ; it insists that they be made homelike, com- fortable and comforting. To obtain the best results and not the cheapest results must be our policy.

REPORT OF THE OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.

The Town of Rutland voted to join with the Towns of Holden, Hubbardston, Paxton, Oakham and Westminster in the Coopera- tive care of her Poor, beginning April 1, 1893. REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES

OF THE

FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

During the past year, through the generosity of the State, One Hundred Dollars worth of new books, 125 volumes, have been ad- ded to the Library. A new supplement to the catalogue has been printed.

The number of books taken from the Library, by readers, during the year is 2345, an increase of 251 over last year. One book has been lost.

The life of John G. Paton, 2 volumes, has been given by Mrs. James H. Kendall.

Your Trustees would call your attention to the careless handling which many of the books suffer, and request that more care be taken in the use of them, and that the injurious practice of turning down the leaves be discontinued.

The Library hours are from 2 till 9 P. M.
