The Selectmen would recommend the following appropriations for the coming year :
THE STATE AND COUNTY TAX.

$3,000 00
Highways,
1,600 00
Bridges,
400 00
Poor,
700 00

Paying Debts,

1,000 00
Memorial Day,
25 00
Your Selectmen would say that some of the departments have drawn orders in excess of the appropriations, while others have drawn less than the appropriations. The Town made no appro- priation for bridges, but as several of the bridges were found to be in a very unsafe condition, especially two at New Boston, it was deemed expedient to construct a new bridge near the school-house which was of iron, erected by the American Bridge Company at a cost of $172, not including the planking; also the replacing of new
22
timbers and new planking of the bridge over Ware River near E. Wellington's. The bridge at North Rutland and one of the abut- ments need quite general repairs, and it may be wise to erect an iron bridge there the coming year.
Respectfully submitted,
C. R. BARTLETT, Selectmen T. S. HEALD, of
HI. E. WHEELER, Rutland
Rutland, February 15, 1901.
23 REPORT OF THE HIGHWAY SURVEYOR.
As Highway Surveyor of the town of Rutland, the following orders have been drawn on the Treasurer for the amounts which have been expended in the following months. The town being divided into two sections and worked by one Surveyor and one Deputy Surveyor.
The west section by H. A. Kennen as follows:
March,
$49 90
April,
277 39
May,
323 68
June.
151 00
August,
79 00
September,
30 25
October,
84 00
November,
8 00
$1,003 22
The east section by Arthur F. Brown as follows :
April,
$292 41
April,
11 00
May,
309 83
June,
180 50
August,
56 67
September,
99 34
October,
16 50
November,
22 34
$988 59
There has been 17 culverts repaired, part of them have been new ones on the west section and about the same on the east section. As there are more that ought to be repaired I would recommend an appropriation of $150 to be expended on culverts. As it is impor- tant they should be kept open I would recommend that the town appropriate the sum of $1,600 for roads and $50 for cutting brush, as this is the sum averaged in the past years.
Respectfully submitted,
H. A. KENNEN, Highway Surveyor.
