REPORT OF OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.
The report of the Overseers of the Poor for the year ending December 31, 1914, is hereby respectfully submitted :
TOWN HOME.
We anticipated a year of more than ordinary demand upon the poor department by reason of the depressed business con- ditions.
So far as the Town Home is concerned no particular difference has been noticed, either in the number of inmates or in the cost. The establishment has continued under the efficient care of Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge, who have devoted their best efforts to its care. About one-half of the inmates are what we designate as permanent. The other half, which is composed almost entirely of men, most of whom are between fifty and sixty years of age, are the class who take care of themselves through a part of the year, applying for admission upon the approach of the inclement season and remaining until the spring weather opens.
It is the intention of the Board to keep this class of inmates usefully employed-in fact the State Board insists that this be done.
When the weather permits these men are employed in the work of reclaiming the rough ground and a material increase in the permanent value of the farm has by this means been effected of late years.
The whole number of those who were at the home the whole or a part of the year was fifty-two, thirty-nine of whom were males and thirteen females. Of these, three were soldiers' relief boarders and nine were temporarily cared for who have no settle- ment in this town.
198
The ages were as follows :
Under 20 years of age- Males 1, females 4 ; Total 5
Between 20 and 30- Males 0, females 1 ; Total 1
Between 30 and 40- Males 2, females 0 ; Total 2
Between 40 and 50- Males 3, females 0 ; Total 3
Between 50 and 60- Males 7, females 1; Total 8
Between 60 and 70- Males 13, females 4 ; Total 17
Between 70 and 80- Males 7, females 2 ; Total 9
Over 80-
Males 6, females 1; Total 7
But one death has occured during the year, which was that of a male inmate fifty-seven years of age.
The number remaining December 31 was 33.
The net cost of running the Home was $4,838.71.
The cost per week for each inmate was $3.70.
We consider that there should be a fire escape built on the rear of the building and some interior changes made to lessen the risk from fire.
To carry out these plans would require an additional appropri- ation of $500.
POOR OUT OF THE HOUSE.
There has been no marked increase in the number of those aided out of the house.
Of such there were of the town's poor 13 cases in city hospitals and 211 individuals in 109 families of one or more. 1
We have also aided of those having non-settlement in this town 79 individuals in 15 families of one or more.
The cost has been as follows :
In families, Town's poor $8,456 08
In families, those having no settlement here . 2,085 04
In hospitals
.
129 29
Total .
. . $10,670 41

MOTHERS WITH DEPENDENT CHILDREN.
Included in the foregoing are eight families who have been aided under the provisons of Chapter 763, Acts of 1913, to the amount of $1,692.74.
One-third of this amount is recoverable from the State. All of these would have had to be helped had the new law not been passed.
One State case has also been aided under this law to the amount of $307.32.
TOWN PHYSICIANS.
The physicians appointed to attend the poor are : William A. Drake, for Ward One and the Town Home; John C. Fraser, for Ward Two; Lewis Pease, for Ward Three; Karl H. Granger,' for Ward Four; Edwin C. Mayberry, for Ward Five.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF TOWN HOME.
To the Overseers of the Poor of Weymouth :
GENTLEMEN :- I hereby submit my report for the year ending December 31, 1914 :
During the year we have given our best efforts and time to the welfare of the inmates and the improvement of the home and farm.
I think the condition of the farm is improving. Several acres of the land were treated with lime, of which it was very much in need, as it had become very sour by reason of no rotation of crops having been practiced for many years. I consider the re- sult of this treatment encouraging and would recommend that it be further extended the coming season.
