The Moderator appointed on the committee under article 24 the following: Byran Leonard, Thomas J. Kelley, James D. Bosworth, Cornelius J. Lynch, Harold W. Raymond, William A. Hodges, Ralph H. Haskins, Charles B. Cushing, Alfonzo Striano.

WARRANT FOR A SPECIAL TOWN MEETING COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS


INORFOLK, ss. To the Constables of the town of Weymouth GREETING :


In the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts you are hereby required to notify and warn the inhabitants of Weymouth aforesaid who are qualified to vote in Town affairs to meet at the Hall of the Weymouth High School on Thursday the 31st .«day of May 1923, at seven o'clock and forty-five minutes in the evening, then and there to act upon the following articles, namely :


Article 1. To see what additional sum of money the town will vote to raise and appropriate for the purpose of celebrating the anniversary of the town.


Article 2. To see what sum of money the town will vote to raise and appropriate for the continuance of passenger transporta- tion on the streets of the town by the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway Company for the year ending May 31, 1924, or take any action in relation thereto.


Article 3. To see if the town will vote to change the name of Independence Square to Ralph Talbot Square, and to discon- tinac the time of Ralph Talbot Square at the junction of Park and Pleasant Streets, also to change the name of William B. Mon- tieth Square formerly known as Fountain Square at the junction of Main and Pond Streets, to Parker B. Thomas Square, and that the junction of Pond and Thicket Streets be named William B. Montieth Square, and to discontinue the name of Parker B. Thomas Square at the junction of Central and Union Streets, or take any other action relating to the naming of Squares as passed under article 54 of the adjourned annual town meeting held at the High School March 13, 1922.


And you are directed to serve this warrant by posting a copy thereof attested by you in writing in each of two public places in each voting precinct seven days at least before the time of holding of said meeting.


Hereof, fail not and make due return of this warrant to the 'Town Clerk of said Town at or before the time of said meeting.


Given under our hands at Weymouth this twenty-second day of May, in the year of our Lord Nineteen hundred and twenty- three.

Weymouth, Mass., May 31, 1923 Pursuant to the within warrant a special meeting of the Town Meeting Members of the Town of Weymouth was held at the Assembly Hall of the Weymouth High School this Thursday, the 31st day of May, 1923. The meeting was called to order by the Town Clerk at 7:45 o'clock p. m. and the warrant was read by said Town Clerk.


Voted : That the Town Clerk be instructed to cast one ballot bearing the name of William J. Holbrook for Moderator pro-tem.


By vote the Town Clerk cast one ballot bearing the name of William J. Holbrook as Moderator pro-tem, there being no other ballots he was declared elected, he was sworn to the faithful per- formance of that duty by the Town Clerk.


Before proceeding to the articles of the Warrant the follow- ing Town Meeting Members having been elected as such at the Annual Town Meeting, were sworn to the faithful performance of their duty, by the Moderator. Article 1. Voted: That the Town raise and appropriate the sum of $4,000 for the purpose of celebrating the 300th anniver- sary of the settlement of the Town of Weymouth, the same to be expended under the direction of the Selectmen.


A unanimous vote.

Article 2. Motion offered by Edward I. Loud, a member of the Appropriation Committee, "That the town raise and appropri- ate a sum not exceeding $3,750 for the purpose of meeting one- half the actual deficit incurred by the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway Company during the nine months period ending February 29, 1924, for maintaining passenger transportation on the streets of this town, provided that the Transportation Com- mittee are able to arrange with the Trustees of the Eastern Mass- achusetts Street Railway Company that this town shall receive an equal credit for its share of the revenue received from the East Weymouth-Quincy line."


The Moderator appointed Melville F. Cate and William A. Hodges as tellers, they were sworn to the faithful performance of that duty.


The question was put before the Town Meeting Members present, the tellers reported 36 voted in the affirmative and 72 in the negative, the Moderator declared the motion lost.


Article 3. Voted: That a committee be appointed by the Moderator, to consist of one or more veterans of the World War, one or more veterans of the Civil War, one or more veterans of the Spanish War, a member of the Weymouth Historical Society, a Member of the Board of Selectmen to make a thorough investi- gation of the question of re-naming certain squares in the town, also a Memorial to veterans of all wars ..


Mr. Russell H. Whiting moved as an amendment that the Representative from this district, Prince H. Tirrell, be added to this committee.


The amendment was so voted.


The question as amended was so voted, 79 in favor and 23 against the motion.


Voted : To adjourn.

one, three, five and six in the halls of the Fire Engine houses lo- cated in those Precincts respectively; in Precinct two, at G. A. R. Hall, on Commercial Street; in Precinct four, at the Citizens Association, Inc., Building, on Front Street; in Precinct seven. at the Lovell's Corner Improvement Association Building on Washington Street, on Tuesday, June 19, 1923, at 2 o'clock in the afternoon, then and there to bring in to the Wardens of their several Precincts, their vote on one ballot "Yes" or "No" upon the following referendum question:


Shall the Town ratify the action of the Representative Town Meeting held on May 31, 1923, voting NO on the following motion?


"That the town raise and appropriate a sum not exceeding $3,750, for the purpose of meeting one-half the actual deficit in- curred by the Eastern Mass. A meeting of the board of Registrars of Voters was held at the Town Office on Tuesday March 13, at 8:30 A.
