Address

Benediction

Director of Vocational Education Rev. Patrick J. Dawson

General inspection of the building and exhibits followed until five o'clock. In the evening a concert by the Meistersingers was given in the Hall under the auspices of the Board of Selectmen, as Trustees of the Tufts Lecture Fund.

During the early summer grading, seeding and road building was done to the extent warranted by the funds available, and a greatly improved appearance of the grounds was obtained.

As it was noted in our former report, the new construction was occupied and used for school purposes as soon as each part became fit for use, and now, after completion, the entire building is occupied by about 725 pupils of the High School, without num- bering the upper grade children from Ward I, who are housed in the portable.

As many as 900 High School scholars can be accommodated in the building as it now stands, without need for further enlarge- ment, except as additional room for vocational work may be re- quired outside the principal building.

Equipment has been purchased from time to time in accord-

207

ance with a general plan therefor, holding closely within original estimates of costs. The Committee here wish to express its thanks to the South Weymouth Savings Bank for its gift of bank- ing fixtures, and to the Weymouth Light & Power Co. for its gift of the electric range used in the cookery class.

There are in the Weymouth High School at the present time thirty-five individual class rooms, a large hall seating eight hun- dred on the floor and in the balcony, and having a stage seating about one hundred and twenty more persons, if necessary. The stage has a proscenium opening of thirty-five feet, provided with a velvet draw curtain, and ample dressing rooms connecting there- with. In the rear of the balcony is a fireproof moving picture booth and a moving picture machine. Underneath the hall is the gymnasium, which is about seventy-five feet square, well adapted for basket ball games and other athletic exercises. .

Other rooms contained in the building are as follows:

1 large lunch room.

4 coat rooms ..

8 toilet rooms.

1 fan room.

1 School Committee Room, Principal's and Superintendent's offices.

2 fireproof vaults. office.

4 locker rooms.

2 showers.

1 boiler room.

storage room for manual training supplies.

2 additional storage rooms.

1 teachers' room for women.

1 teachers' room for men.

3 supply rooms.

It is impossible to apportion accurately the amount spent upon the new addition and upon work done in the old building, but it would be a fair estimate to say that not less than $25,000 of the appropriation was spent in alteration of and equipping the old building, and a like amount for equipping the new, and grading, leaving a balance of not more than $250,000 for strictly structural purposes of the new building, which contains 820,284 cubic feet, making the cost of construction of the new building a little over thirty cents per cubic foot.

The educational plan of the building is to utilize the old portion principally for the three upper classes, the wing connect- ing the new and the old for vocational work, and a large part of the new wing for the freshman class, this arrangement leaving at the end of the new wing the isolated hall and gymnasium, thereby making it possible to use these quarters at any time with- out in the least degree disturbing the school program. Practical use of the hall and gymnasium has amply justified this arrange- ment.

The Committee herewith submit a complete list of expendi- tures alphabetically arranged.

Your Committee has been further instructed to report to the Town upon the question of securing land to be used for a play- ground in connection with the High School. There are several areas in the vicinity of the school that might seem desirable for this purpose. There is, however, no single area which can be adapted to athletic purposes without considerable expense, either for purchase or preparation, or both. In one case the land is not level, and is, besides, of small area. In another case the land has no soil upon the outcropping ledges. In another case the

210

land is hardly large enough, and in the case of the land at the- junction of Middle and Commercial Streets, the land, although. almost perfectly level, must be thoroughly drained. This land be- longs to the Putnam Estate and can be purchased for what seems. to your Committee a reasonable. sum, and one which the Town can. legally pay, provided it is bought by the Town for this purpose alone. It would be a matter of some years before the approxi -- mately thirteen acres could be perfected for athletic uses, and it- would be a matter of one or two years before it could be properly drained and a portion of it made available for use. The situa- tion is very favorable, being nearly equi-distant from three of the four principal villages of the Town, and a very short distance from the High School. Containing as it does nearly thirteen acres of level land, it seems to your Committee that the opportunity is an exceptional one, looking ahead into the future a few years. The- sum of at least $10,000 would be needed to purchase the land and. to construct the drainage necessary before any work of much. consequence can be done on the surface, although this sum might, under favorable conditions, allow a limited amount of work in. surfacing a portion of the land. At all events, the main object at the present time would be the acquisition of the land and its: proper drainage. We are advised by the Town Engineer that the. grades are such that it is entirely feasible to have this land prop- erly drained.
