For Scituate Town Meeting, March 7, 1898
ARTICLE 1. To choose a Moderator to preside in said meeting.
ART. 2. To choose all necessary Town Officers for the ensuing year.
ART. 3. To hear the Annual Report of the Selectmen and `other Town Officers and act thereon.
ART. 4. To raise and appropriate such sums of money as may be necessary to defray Town charges for the ensuing year.
ART. 5. To fix the rate of wages for removing snow the cur- rent year.
ART. 6. To act on the list of Jurors as proposed by the Selectmen.
ART. 7. To see if the Town will authorize the Overseers of the Poor to contract, at their discretion, for the support of the Town's poor.
ART. 8. To see if the Town will authorize its Treasurer to borrow money under the direction of the Selectmen, in anticipa- tion of taxes of the present year.
ART. 9. To hear the report of any Committee heretofore chosen, or act thereon.
ART. 10. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $100 annually for Memorial Day.
ART. 11. To see if the Town will make allowance to Town Creditors, or act thereon.
ART. 12. To see if the Town will determine the way and man- ner in which its taxes shall be collected the present year, or act thereon.
ART. 13. To ballot on the question of granting liquor licenses in this Town; the ballots to be "Yes" or " No" in answer to the question : Shall licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicat- ing liquors in this Town ?
ART. 14. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate such
sum of money as it may deem necessary to preserve order and en- force the liquor law.
ART. 15. To see if the Town will authorize its Annual Report to be printed and distributed in the month of February each year, until changed by vote of the Town.
ART. 16. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $15 for care of the " Old Meeting House Lane Cemetery," Prospect Street.
ART. 17. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $100 for cattle inspection, or act thereon.

ART. 22. To see if the Town will authorize the Town Clerk to liave the ancient town records preserved, by enclosing the same in transparent silk, at a cost not to exceed $30, or act thereon.
ART. 23. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $500, to repair the road from Peter Murphy's to the light-house, or act thereon.
ART. 24. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $500, to repair the road and sidewalk on Front Street, at the Harbor, and to repair the bridge railing along the same, or act thereon.
ART. 25. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $250, for the salary of Superintendent of schools, or act thereon.
ART. 26. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $1000, for transportation of pupils, or act thereon.
ART. 27. To see if the Town will ratify deeds made by the Selectmen as follows, viz : Deed of the Grove Street school liouse lot to William W. Damon, and deed of the Beach Street school house lot to Elijah P. Pratt.
ART. 28. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $100, for ornamental trees, to be put from North Scituate Depot to North Scituate Beach, or act thereon.
ART. 29. To see if the Town will construct a sidewalk on the westerly side of Beach Street, from W. H. and R. L. Drapers' to Stony Beach, and raise and appropriate money for the same, or act thereon.
ART. 30. To see if the Town will choose a Committee to in- vestigate the subject of purchasing one or more Chemical fire en- gines, one to be located at North Scituate, and one at the Harbor, Committee to report at a future meeting.
ART. 31. Will the Town raise and appropriate a sum of money to employ a drawing teacher in the schools?
ART. 32. To see if the Town will purchase of Mrs. Wills a sufficient quantity of land to square the Hatherly school house lot, and fence the same, and raise and appropriate a sum of money for the purpose, or act thereon.
ART. 33. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $200, to grade the grounds around the Hatherly school house, or act thereon.
ART. 34. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $125, to cement the High School house cellar, or act thereon.
ART. 35. To see if the Town will choose a Surveyor of High- ways for one year, as provided in Chapter 374 of the Acts of 1895.
ART. 36. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $75, to be expended by the Road Surveyor, for grading and seeding the Common at the East Grammar school house.
ART. 37. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate $100, for shade trees to be expended under the direction of the Select- men, or act thereon.
ART. 38. To see if the Town will instruct its Selectmen to provide work for all tramps in payment for food, and lodging given them, or act thereon.
ART. 39. Referred from the Annual Meeting, March 1, 1897. "Will the Town accept as a Town way a road on the 3d Cliff, commencing at a certain point on Water Street, on land of heirs of the late John Welch, and running northerly over the Cliff, and. terminating on Highland Street, near land of Edward Cummings, and raise and appropriate a sum of money to build the same, or act thereon.
ART. 40. Will the Town raise and appropriate $150, for special repairs to the road, and water ways, at, and near the Junction of Main and Blossom Streets, at Gannett's corner ?
ART. 41. To see if the Town will revoke its vote of March 1, 1897, whereby it accepted Chapter 374, Acts of 1895, placing the repairs of Roads and Bridges under a single Highway surveyor.

ART. 42. Will the Town authorize and instruct its Selectmen, to grant a license to Thomas P. Mulcay, to build and maintain a stable for more than four horses, on his premises at North Scituate Beach, in accordance with Chapter 395 of the Acts of 1890?
ART. 43. Will the Town raise and appropriate $200, to build a sidewalk on the northerly side of Main Street, from the corner of Curtis and Branch Streets, to a point opposite the house of Miss Roberta Jenkins, or act thereon ?

ART. 45. Will the Town authorize its Treasurer to pay a bounty of twenty-five cents a head for all woodchucks brought to him, and killed within the limits of the Town?

ART. 6. Relating to list of jurors. James E. Otis, George H. Lincoln, G. Wilbur Damon, James H. Merritt, wishing to be excused, their names were stricken from the jury list, the names of G. Austin Litchfield, Alfred H. Newcomb, Christo pher O. Neil, Charles Manson substituted.
ART. 7 .- Voted, That the Town authorize the Overseers o the Poor to contract at their discretion for the support o the town's poor.
ART. 8 .- Voted, That the Treasurer be and is hereby author ized and directed, with the approval of the Selectmen, to borrow temporarily, in anticipation of the taxes of the present muni- cipal year, such sums of money as the same may be from time to time required and to give the negotiable note or notes of the town for money so borrowed, and that all such temporary loans shall be payable from the said taxes.
ART. 10. Voted, That the Town raise and appropriate $100.00 for Memorial Day.
ART. 11 .- To make allowance to town creditors.

ART. 12 .- That the way and manner in which the taxes shall be collected be the same as last year.
Five per cent. discount allowed upon all taxes paid on o before October 1, 1897 ; 4 per cent. on or before November 1, 1897 ; 3 per cent. on or before December 1, 1897.
ART. 19 .- Voted, That the Town cause its annual repor to be printed and distributed in the month of February 1898
ART. 20 .- That the Town offer for sale its vacant schoo house buildings and lots, viz :-
The Central street primary school house and lot; the North Main street primary school house and lot ; the Charles street primary school house (building) only.
Voted, That the Selectmen have authority to sell thes buildings and lots at public auction and that they be in

structed to bid them in for the Town, provided they do not bring a fair price.
ART. 21 .- Voted, that the Town raise and appropriate $20.00 for the care of the Old Meeting House Lane Cemetery (Prospect Street.)
ART. 22 .- Voted, That the Town raise and appropriate $100.00 for Cattle Inspector.
ART. 23 .- In regard to deepening the Hollow Well at at Scituate Centre. (Voted) to indefinitely postpone.
ART. 9 .- To hear the report of any Committee.
The Town Clerk chosen at a previous Town meeting to look up the By-laws of the Town if there were any in existance presented a set of By-laws, that were adopted by the Town in March, 1884.
These were read by the Moderator.
ART. 43 .- Voted, That the Town Clerk with a Committee of two, be a committee to make alterations in the By-laws reported.
Henry T. Bailey and Francis B. Lee chosen that Com- mittee.
ART. 18 .- Voted, That the Selectmen petition the Massa- chusetts Highway Commission to have a section of State road built, but that they be instructed not to contract for con- structing the same.
ART. 24 .- Voted, That the Assessors abate the uncollected taxes from 1875 to 1886, inclusive, amounting to $124.58.
ART. 25 .- Will the Town purchase a road roller ?

ART. 26 .- Voted, That the Selectmen constitute a Board of Health.
ART. 27 .- Voted, That the Highway Surveyor be instruc- ted to purchase as many gravel screens as he may deem

ART. 28 .- In regard to screening all the gravel before using it on the highways.
Voted, That the Highway Surveyor shall use his discretion. ART. 29 .- Will the Town purchase a stone crusher ?

ART. 30 .- Voted, That the Town widen that portion of Gannett Street leading from the gravel pit, near the house of Benj. T. Ellms to Battle's Hill, and that $500.00 be raised and appropriated for that purpose ; said widening to be let out by contract by the Selectmen, provided the con- tract does not call for more than $500.00.
ART. 31 .- Voted, That the Town accept as a Town-way the road leading from the house of Henry Pettis at North Scitu- ate Beach to the Glades, as laid out by the Road Commis- sioners, and that the Treasurer be instructed, under the di- rection of the Selectmen, to borrow $2,500.00 to build the road; the building of the road to be put out by contract, under the direction of the Highway Surveyor.
ART. 32 .- Voted, That the Town raise and appropriate $500.00 to raise the road leading from Front Street to the Second Cliff and repair the fence along the same ; said work to be put out by contract under the direction of the High- way Surveyor.
ART. 33 .- Voted, That the Town raise and appropriate $300.00 to extend the sidewalk begun last year on the north side of the road leading from North Scituate Beach to North Scituate Village, said work to be put out by contract under the direction of the Highway Surveyor.
ART. 34 .- Voted, That the Town raise and appropriate $100.00 to grade and improve the East Grammar School yard and Common.

ART. 35 .- Voted, That the Town adopt the name of Hatherly School for the new school house, as proposed by the School Committee.
ART. 36 .- Voted, That the Town raise and appropriate $250.00 to concrete the cellar of the Hatherly School house, said work to be put out by contract under the direction of the School Committee, Portland cement to be used.
ART. 37 .- Will the Town raise and appropriate $300.00. Voted, To pass over.
ART. 40 .- In regard to grading the grounds and building a fence around the Hatherly School. Voted, To pass over.
ART. 41-Voted, That the Town raise $200.00 to build a sidewalk, commencing at the Post Office, at the Harbor, and running on Front and Central streets to the Scituate R. R. Station.
ART. 42 .- Voted, That the Town raise and appropriate $25.00 to provide markers for the graves of Revolutionary Soldiers buried in the Town, said sum to be expended under the direction of Post 31, G. A. R.
ART. 44 .- Will the Town pay Everett Litchfield and others $100.00 for causing the arrest of two tramps who broke into a house at North Scituate. Voted, To pass over.
ART. 45 .- Voted, That the Town instruct its committee to have fish ways put in the several dams in the stream run- ning from Scituate pond to Cohasset Harbor.
ART. 46. Voted, That the Town raise and appropriate the sum of $100.00 for the purpose of improving and protecting the Alewive Fishery in the stream running from Scituate pond to Cohasset Harbor.
ART. 47. Will the Town accept Chapter 170 of the Acts of 1891, giving towns jurisdiction over highways and County bridges. Referred to next town meeting.
