The work commenced with a study of the leaves and dried grasses and sedges, studying the characteristic growth of each.
In the lower grades the children used the colored pencils ; the drawings in the grammar grades were made with the brushes in ink. Next came object drawing, using the vegetables and fruits, and through the kindness of Mrs. Waldo Bates, wooden models were purchased for the third and fourth grades.
The older scholars have made a study of form by drawing the silhouette of objects with the brush in ink.
Lately we have begun mechanical drawing, which the boys, particularly, will find interesting.
In the spring, we hope to correlate the drawing with nature study, making the drawings of the flowers with water color paints.
81
Since the month of October there has been special atten- tion given to drawing in the High School. Water colors have been introduced, and drawings have been made of the fall flowers and sedges, and lastly a study of the evergreens.
Taking into consideration the fact that to the great ma- jority of the pupils in the High School this work is some- thing entirely new, the work is eminently satisfactory.
There are evidences of marked ability, not only among the pupils of the High School, but also in the lower grades, and there is no reason why excellent work may not be done by the schools in the future., and why they may not compare very favorably with other schools who have had greater ad- vantages along this line of work.
Respectfully submitted,
SARA TILDEN BAILEY,
.
Teacher of Drawing.
