Report of the Selectmen and Board of Public Welfare

To the Citizens of the Town of Mattapoisett :

In accordance with Section 49, Chapter 40 of the General Laws your Board of Selectmen herewith sub- mits the following reports of the various departments and officers to this Board.

On March 13, 1956, the Board organized as fol- lows: Lester A. Crampton, Chairman, Board of Select- men and Board of Public Welfare; George S. White, Clerk.

The list of Jurors is also incorporated in this re- port as required by Chapter 234, Section 4 of the Gen- eral Laws, and Section 343, Acts of 1949.

We also submit a report of a State Audit of Ac- counts of the Town of Mattapoisett for the period from December 4, 1955 to November 17, 1956 made in ac- cordance with provisions of Chapter 44, General Laws.

In this Centennial Year of 1957 the Town can look back upon the year of 1956 as a year of the high- est tax rate in the history of Mattapoisett; a year in which the Board of Public Welfare did not have enough funds to meet its obligations except with an emergency authorization from the Director of the Division of Accounts; a year in which many departments could not plan for the future but were interested only in successfully operating the daily needs of the Town.

All this is over now as the Board feels that the Town is over the "hump" in its financial conditions.

12

It is the sincere request of the Board that enough funds be left in the Surplus Revenue account so that any unforseen emergency might be met without dif- ficulty.

In this Centennial Year of 1957, the Board is placing before the Town, once again, its thoughts on the desirability of the complete acquisition of the for- mer roadbed of the Fairhaven Branch of the Old Colony Railroad. There is no question in the minds of the Members of the Board of Selectmen that this acquisition will not only resolve the approach to the new rubbish disposal area but at the same time it will be a great step into the future in providing more beach area for its citizens. It is a well established fact that the present Bathing Beach is far too small on cre- tain occasions during the summer months. Before it is too late, definite authorization should be voted to your Board of Selectmen so that the proper steps might be started to acquire more recreational areas for Mat- tapoisett.

The thoughts of the School Committee in propos- ing to the Citizens of Mattapoisett that definite steps should be taken at this time to form a committee to in- vestigate the desirability of constructing a Regional High School with our sister Towns of "Old Rochester" seems to the Board of Selectmen to be a most fitting and appropriate step in this Centennial Year.

Old Home Week! There are many citizens still residing in Mattapoisett who recall vividly the cele- bration of 1907; and a great many of the celebrations of 1932, with its pageants, parades, clambake near the Bathing Beach, etc. It is hoped that the cele- bration of this year will recall memories of friends and events of the prior Old Home Week.

13

The Board of Selectmen wishes to extend to one and all of the Boards its thanks and appreciation for the help which was received in administering the Town Affairs for the interest of all. It wishes also to ex- tend its thanks and appreciation to those citizens, civic and church organizations for any assistance which they might have rendered the Town during the past year.

Respectfully submitted,

LESTER A. CRAMPTON MANUEL C. LINHARES GEORGE S. WHITE
