The Center School lunchroom was opened May 3, 1954 under the capable direction of Mrs. Minnie B. Tinkham. The lunchroom is operated in coopera- tion with the Federal School Lunch Program through which some "surplus commodities" are obtained for merely the cost of handling. The lunchroom oper- ates with a revolving fund in which is deposited all receipts for sales and all government reimbursements. The reimbursement amounts to 9 cents for each pupil's meal with milk and 2 cents for milk alone.
250
The pupil's payment of 25 cents a day does not cover much more than the wholesale cost of the food consumed. We believe that with the government subsidy and some help from the town the lunchroom can continue to be of considerable benefit to the chil- dren. The town's help in 1954 consisted in paying the manager's salary amounting to $862.14 and an amount of $1,844.81 for other expenses. The plan for the future is for the town to pay from the school budget only the manager's salary and the necessary expenses of heat, light, janitor service, and supervision.
With the expansion of the school in enrollment, in teachers, in transportation problems and the es- tablishment of a lunchroom, more items must be cared for by the principals' office. There are more notices to get out, more telephone calls, more conferences with pupils and parents, more records and reports and more organization problems. The Committee, therefore, authorized the employment of a clerk for the principal's office for twenty hours a week at $1.00 an hour beginning March 10, 1954.
The school grounds have been greatly improved by grading and seeding the part near Hammond Street. Further improvement should be undertaken including the building of a baseball backstop and laying out a new diamond.
Your attention is called to the accompanying re- ports which are presented as a part of the report of the School Committee.
Respectfully submitted, NELSON F. TINKHAM, Chairman
WALTER E. LONGMORE, Secretary RITA H. DUNN, Agent

One additional teacher was authorized beginning in September 1954 making a total staff of a principal, 18 full-time teachers, and four part-time teachers.
ADDITIONAL HELP
With the additional teacher authorized this year we have two teachers for every grade from one to nine. With the additional time authorized for the part-time teachers the supervisors of art and music have two days each week to cover the 18 classes. The two days for manual training permit a much better program for the boys than we have had in recent years. The addition of a part-time clerk in the principal's of- fice has been of considerable benefit in allowing the principal more time for his supervisory work.
EQUIPMENT
During the year we have spent a total of $453.44 on new equipment. This includes a sewing machine for the junior high classes, several pieces of equip- ment for manual training, and large rubber mats for the school entrances. We should make still further purchases for the manual training room in the coming year.
CONCLUSION
We have had a very busy and a very good year. Your interest and cooperation in solving the problems as they arise have been greatly appreciated.
Respectfully submitted,
FLAVEL M. GIFFORD,
Superintendent
Report of the Principal
To the Superintendent of Schools :
Herewith is my third annual report as Center School principal.
The year 1954 saw more young people than ever before enrolled in the nation's schools, found nearly every problem facing the schools having a financial overtone, and brought a definite decline in the quan- tity of new teachers available. Mattapoisett shares the same problems.
With every classroom now used as a homeroom it is necessary to teach sewing in a basement room, and with the opening of the cafeteria, physical educa- tion activities have been curtailed. It is fortunate that the Center School is staffed so thoroughly by trained personnel. Twelve teachers took special edu- cational courses during 1954 along. The profession- al attitude of the staff is apparent also by their 100% membership in the state and local teacher association and 75% membership in N. E. A.
Increased junior high school enrollment necessi- tated expanded art, manual training, sewing and vo- cal music supervision, while the employment of a capable part-time clerk expedites efficient handling of cafeteria accounts and permits the principal more time for administration, organization, and supervision. The total program would benefit substantially more if the clerk were on duty throughout the entire school day.
Under the effective management of Mrs. Minnie B. Tinkham and her industrious staff the cafeteria has
254
been successful with over fifty percent of the student body consuming daily a complete lunch and another twelve percent milk alone.
Dental clinics maintained by the Board of Health continue in the school plant. A school dental fund balance of $303.78 is available to the Board for the purchase of necessary equipment.
The visual aids program received a major boost when a new moving picture projector was purchased by the School Committee. PTC contributions toward film strips, rentals, and flannel board materials play a vital role too.
The junior high school program in particular is hampered by a very faulty bell and clock system. Classes are dependent upon accurate signals for syn- chronized passing.
Particular thanks for donations are due Mrs. Charles Boyd, American Legion, Mattapoisett Lions Club, Mr. William Chase, Mattapoisett Parent-Teach- ers Club, Mrs. Stanley W. Fenno, Miss Minerva Spar- row, Mr. George M. Ward, the Mattapoisett Public Library, the graduating class of 1954, and the Matta- poisett Woman's Club.
I am confident that the Mattapoisett Center School, with the encouragement of its host of friends, will continue to fulfill its mission - the preparation of responsible informed citizens.
Respectfully submitted,
ARTHUR F. BAKER,
Principal

SCHOOL AGE
Children may enter the first grade if they are five years and six months of age on or before September 1 of the current school year. Consequently children will be admitted to the first grade in September 1955 if born on or before March 1, 1950. Certificates of birth and vaccination, required at time of entrance, will be returned to the parents.
Parents desiring to enter children in the school for the first time should register them with the Prin- cipal on May 13 or September 2.
260
All children must attend school between the ages of 7 and 16. Certain exceptions may be made by written permission of the Superintendent of Schools for children who have reached the age of 14.
EMPLOYMENT OF MINORS
Educational certificates are required for all per- sons under 21 who are employed in manufacturing, mechanical, mercantile, and certain other establish- ments, and in certain trades. These certificates may be obtained at the office of the Superintendent of Schools or from the Principal of the Center School. The minor must appear in person and should present a birth certificate. If the minor is between the ages of 14 and 16 and the employment involves leaving school, permission must be obtained from the Superin- tendent of Schools personally.
