School work has progressed normally. A good attendance record for the last school year helped to make up for time lost on account of the polio epidemic and other days on account of bad weather and road conditions.

Your assistance and sincere interest in maintain- ing a good school system is greatly appreciated.

Respectfully submitted,

FLAVEL M. GIFFORD,

Superintendent of Schools

Report of the Principal

To the Superintendent of Schools :

I submit herewith my second annual report as principal of the Center School.

Helping to prepare your child mentally and so- cially to better adjust to the competitive rigors of a civilized world is the only purpose of a school build- ing and its personnel. Proper mental and social growth cannot be accomplished through the school alone. The dual direction of home and school gives the round- ed personality so necessary in our everchanging world.

General Information

IMPROVEMENTS: During the past fiscal year, many improvements have been made and equipment added to the school. An Audio-Visual Aids room large enough to accommodate two classes has been set up in the basement of the old building. The PTC has donated a large radiant screen which gives full view, clear motion, and still pictures to all students. A fine Opaque Projector has been added. This machine is used to project full pages of books, magazines, and separate paintings on the screen. It will also project articles such as science specimens and actual experi- ments too small for an entire class to see otherwise. The PTC has recently added a tachistoscope to our Audio-Visual equipment. This instrument will stim- ulate interest and increase speed in reading. It is also of value in many other subjects.

A much needed heating system has been added to the sewing room.

244

The Lions Club of Mattapoisett has donated a com- plete Massachusetts Vision Testing apparatus. It is now possible to test children's eyes efficiently at any time rather than only at specified dates during the year, as was previously the case.

The manual training department has been aug- mented by the addition of a new electric wood lathe. Also, an automotive section has been started by the addition of an eight cylinder and a one cylinder motor. It is hoped that a class in the principles of automotive functions may soon be added to our curriculum.

A new circular drive and parking area have been contemplated for the Barstow Street side of the school. This would be an added safety factor and leave Bar- stow Street clear for traffic and parents' cars picking up children after school.

CAFETERIA: The cafeteria is now serving be- tween 330-350 hot meals each day. A part-time wom- an has been added to the staff. As the number of meals served increases, it becomes apparent that our dishwasher and general kitchen outlay is too small to effectively serve this number of meals. An example of this is the fact that the hot water heater has had to be placed in the next room in order to give suf- ficient room for the new stove which has six burners and one oven.

APPRECIATION :

1. To the School Committee for its readiness to cooperate in all school matters.

2. To the Superintendent of Schools for his un- derstanding and ready advice.

3. To the PTC for having one of the finest or- ganizations I have seen.

245

4. To the faculty for their continued patience and constant desire to improve.

5. To Mrs. Tinkham and her cafeteria staff for their efficiency and ability to adapt to any situation.

6. To the clerical and custodial help who have done so much behind the scenes.

7. To the American Legion for donations of fruit at Christmas time.

8. To Mr. Edward Sylvia for his donation of two motors for the Manual Training room.

9. To the Lions Club of Mattapoisett for its donation of the Massachusetts Vision-Testing appar- atus.

10. To all persons whose names are too numerous to mention here, who have helped to make the Center School the fine institution it is.

Respectfully submitted,

RALPH C. GLIDDEN, JR.

SCHOOL AGE

Children may enter the first grade if they are five years and six months of age on or before September 1 of the current school year. Consequently children will be admitted to the first grade in September 1957 if born on or before March 1, 1952. Certificates of birth and vaccination, required at time of entrance, will be returned to the parents.

Parents desiring to enter children in the school for the first time should register them at the School on May 10 or August 30.

All children must attend school between the ages of 7 and 16. Certain exceptions may be made by writ- ten permission of the Superintendent of Schools for children who have reached the age of 14.

251

EMPLOYMENT OF MINORS UNDER 18

Educational certificates are required for all per- sons under 18 who are employed in manufacturing, mechanical, mercantile, and certain other establish- ments, and in certain trades. These certificates may be obtained at the office of the Superintendent of Schools or from the Principal of the Center School. The minor must appear in person and should present a birth certificate. If the minor is between the ages of 14 and 16 and the employment involves leaving school, permission must be obtained from the Superin- tendent of Schools personally.
