The 8th grade at the Hurd School designed and executed a Christmas stained glass window, while the 8th grade at the Greenwood School did several small murals for a first grade room.

Director of Instrumental Music, Joseph H. Fanck

Fifty-two students are enrolled in the High School band, and 21 in the High School orchestra. These groups rehearse three times a week, and play at various school and town functions. The High School band goes to all out-of-town football games, paying its own expenses from the money earned at the Memorial Day parades and the Annual Concert.

The Junior band has 21 members and the Junior orchestra 20, with weekly rehearsals. These groups serve as feeders for the Senior band and orchestra.

In addition approximately 125 boys and girls are taking instrumental lessons, and play publicly in several recitals which are held at the close of the year.

Director of Physical Education, Earle W. Crompton

Organized Physical Education classes for both boys and girls of the seventh and eighth grades have been started in all the elementary schools. Two 40-minute periods per week are devoted to this work, with emphasis on health, nutrition and play.

One hundred and fifty girls played on 12 kickball teams. Other girls' sports are basketball and softball. Boys take part in track, football, bas- ketball, hockey and baseball.

The gymnasium at Franklin has proved very successful as a place for the elementary school program, and as soon as possible the auditoriums at both Greenwood and Montrose should be converted into gymnasiums.

In closing, may I compliment Wakefield on the type of people it elects to the School Committee. The loss, during my tenure, of such members as Marcus G. Beebe, Jr., William W. Allyn, and William J. Lee, was seri- ous, yet Mrs. Robert Dutton, Mr. Michael F. Collins, and Mr. Herbert D. Hancock have admirably accepted their responsibilities. The faculty has done an extremely good job and deserves every public acclaim which can be given it. My greatest admiration, however, is reserved for the boys and girls of Wakefield and their parents, for, without them and their support, it would be impossible to make the adjustments which are necessary in maintaining a modern school system.

Respectfully submitted,

CARL M. BAIR, JR.

ETHELYN M. PATTEE

After thirty-nine years of teaching, twenty-seven of which were in Wakefield, Miss Ethelyn M. Pattee retired from the High School Faculty in July, 1949.

A graduate of Wellesley, with a Master's degree from Columbia, Miss Pattee also studied at McGill University, L'Alliance Francaise and the Sorbonne. She also traveled extensively in France.

Miss Pattee possessed a deep aesthetic nature which established a special bond between her and those of her students who shared with her an interest in music and the arts. There were those who, years after they left the High School, never returned to Wakefield without getting in touch with her.

Among the teaching staff her gay spirit, her ready wit, her warm friendliness, and her unfailing thoughtfulness will long be remembered.

· As one teacher said of her, "If she retired to the deserts of Arabia, an oasis would spring up around her overnight. She is that kind of a person."

The School Department extends to her every good wish for the years ahead, realizing that, with her many and varied interests, she will never experience a dull or an idle moment.
