Report of Selectmen


To the Citizens of the Town of Wakefield:


We herewith respectfully submit the annual report of the Board of Selectmen for the year ending December 31, 1949, together with the re- ports of the several departments under our control or supervision.


The Board, consisting of William G. Dill, Burton F. Whitcomb, Ray- mond S. Dower, William R. Lindsay, and Philip J. Flanders, organized March 8, 1949, by electing Raymond S. Dower, Chairman, and Philip J. Flanders, Secretary. Charles C. Cox was appointed Clerk.

Licenses were granted by the Selectmen for the sale of alcoholic bev- erages for the year 1949 to the following, subject to the approval of the State Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission:

Jeffrey's Package Store, Inc., 354 Main Street


Ignazio Palumbo, Jr. (Palumbo's Annex), 35-37 Albion Street


S. Tine & Sons, Inc., 38-38A Water Street


Receipts from these and other licenses granted during the year 1949 are shown in the Town Accountant's report.


Reports of the various departments under the supervision of the Board of Selectmen and containing complete information, will be found under other and appropriate headings in this report.


Acting as a Board of Survey, the Selectmen approved layouts of the following developments and private ways to be opened to public use:


Friend Street


Shetland Road


Atwood Avenue


Keeling Road


Farm Street


Western Avenue


Kimball Avenue


All of these streets, except Friend, Farm and Atwood Avenue will be presented to the annual town meeting of 1950 for acceptance as public ways.


Contracts were awarded for construction on Babson, Lotus, Houston and D Streets, and on Elm Crest Road, Pilgrim Road, Juniper Road, Clif- ton Avenue and Pierce Avenue.


Parking limitations were established on Lafayette Street, Common Street, Richardson Avenue and Chestnut Street.


The Department of Public Works approved Angle Parking with meters from Albion Street north to Yale Avenue on the west side of Main Street and from Mechanic Street north to a point opposite Yale Avenue on the East side of Main Street. Meters will be installed should the Town Meet- ing of 1950 vote to appropriate sufficient money to pay for highway and police work incident to the installation and operation of the meters.


Roland B. Oliver was reappointed to the Retirement Board.


Two joint meetings were held with the School Committee to fill vacan- cies created by the resignations of Mr. William J. Lee and Mr. William W. Allyn. Mr. Michael F. Collins and Mr. Herbert D. Hancock were elected to fill the vacancies.


A joint meeting was held with the Water Board to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr. Herman G. Dresser. Mr. Charles M. Miller was elected to fill the vacancy.


On a petition of Mr. E. J. Butler, the Board approved changing the names of:


"A" Avenue to Robbin Road "G" Avenue to Hillcrest Road "C" Avenue to Fernwood Road "D" Street to Woodbriar Street

The town enjoyed a second visit from Councillor Edward Slater of Wakefield, England, this time accompanied by his gracious and charming wife. They were entertained by various organizations and friends. This visit helped to cement tighter the close friendship established by Mr. Slater's first visit.


The members of the Board are very appreciative of the co-operation they received this past year from the other Boards and particularly from the Heads of Departments and personnel under their supervision.
