ARTICLE 1
To see if the Town will appropriate the sum of $1,300.00, from the Excess and Deficiency Account or from other available funds, to cover in- terest payable on bonds issued during the year 1949 .- Town Treasurer.

Article 3. To hear and act upon the report of a committee under Article 54 of the warrant for the annual town meeting for the year 1948 relative to the advisability of erecting a Fire Station in the west side of the town .- West Side Fire Station Committee.
Article 4. To hear and act upon the report of a committee appointed or designated under Article 44 of the warrant for the annual town meet- ing for the year 1949 relative to selecting a suitable parcel of land on the west side of the town for the purpose of erecting thereon a Fire Station at some future time .- West Side Fire Station Committee.
Report of committee read by Selectman Burton F. Whitcomb. It was signed by Robert H. Adams, chairman, and Burton F. Whitcomb, Colby L. Burbank, Fred D. Graham, Walter F. Carley, and E. A. Lowry. The report recommended the purchase of the site located at the corner of Prospect Street and Parker Road.

ARTICLE 5
To see if the Town will vote to authorize the Board of Selectmen to take by right of eminent domain or by purchase, the following described parcel of land situated at the corner of Prospect Street and Parker Road and bounded northerly by land of Laura Forrest et al, about 186.58 feet; easterly by Parker Road 70.07 feet; southeasterly by a curved line at junc- tion of Prospect Street and Parker Road about 52.02 feet; southerly by Prospect Street by two lines totaling 150.67 feet; westerly by land of Tyler about 151.19 feet and containing 23,748 square feet, for the purpose of erecting, at some future date, a Fire Station, and appropriate a sufficient

sum of money therefor, the same to be taken from the Excess and De- ficiency Account and/or raised and appropriated to enter the Tax Levy for the year 1950 or what they will do about it .- West Side Fire Station Committee.
Motion by Finance Committee:

Adams exhibited a stereopticon picture, prepared by the committee, showing a map of the district, and slides showing figures rep- resenting the valuation of business property on the West Side compared to valuation of residential property in the area of the proposed site for the fire station.
When Mr. Adams' speaking time expired, Herbert D. Anderson moved that the speaker's time be extended, and it was so voted.
At 8.59 P. M., Charles C. Cox moved the Previous Question, and it was Voted: That the main question be now put.
The Finance Committee's motion to indefinitely postpone then was voted in the affirmative.
ARTICLE 6
To see if the Town will appropriate the sum of $289.00 for extra clerk hire for the Assessors' Department, this sum to be taken from the Excess and Deficiency account .- Board of Assessors.
On motion by Finance Committee:
Voted: That the Town appropriate the sum of $256.80 for payment for extra clerk hire for the Assessors' Department for the balance of the year 1949, funds for same to be taken from the Excess and Deficiency Account.
ARTICLE 7
To see if the Town will vote to appropriate a sufficient sum of money to indemnify Police Officer John L. Clark for medical care, hospital ex- penses and loss of wages as a result of injuries received by said officer while in performance of his duties, as provided for under Section 100, Chapter 41 of the General Laws, in such amount and to the extent as may be recommended by the Board of Selectmen; funds for same to be pro- vided by transfer from unexpended balances of the following appropria- tions:
Article 59 of Annual Town Meeting of 1946 for expenses of Capital Outlay Committee.
Article 17 of Annual Town Meeting of 1948 for repairs to piano at Lafayette Building.

ARTICLE 9
To see if the Town will instruct the Moderator to appoint a committee of seven citizens of the town to make a detailed study of the adequacy of the water supply of the Town of Wakefield and report their findings and recommendations to the next annual town meeting and authorize said committee to hire such engineering services as they may find necessary and appropriate a sufficient sum of money therefor and for the expenses of said committee .- Water and Sewer Board.
On motion by Finance Committee:
Voted: That the Moderator be instructed to appoint a committee of seven citizens of the Town, three of whom to be members of the Water Board, to make a detailed study of the adequacy of the water supply of the Town of Wakefield, and report their findings and recommendations to the Annual Town Meeting of the year 1951; and authorize said com- mittee to hire engineering services as found necessary, and appropriate the sum of $2,000. therefor and for expenses of said committee, the said sum to be raised in the tax levy of the year 1950.
ARTICLE 10
To hear and act upon a report of the committee appointed under article 1 for the Town Meeting held May 2, 1949 .- The Committee.
Report of the committee read by Forrest Carter; said report recom- mended purchase of boulevard land at the head of Lake Quannapowitt from the Metropolitan District Commission at a price of $1.00, as provided by Legislative act.

ARTICLE 11
To see if the Town will vote to purchase at a cost not exceeding $1.00 as provided for in Chapter 679 Acts of the year 1949, the land and appur- tenances now owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and under control of the Metropolitan District Commission adjacent to Quannapowitt Lake, including the roadway known as Quannapowitt Parkway, all as de- scribed in an instrument of taking by said Commission dated July 19th, 1916 and recorded with Middlesex South District Deeds, Book 4072 Page 264 and an instrument of taking by said Commission dated February 24th, 1926 and recorded in said deed book 4941 Page 485, and appropriate the sum of $1.00 to pay therefor, the same to be taken from the Excess and Deficiency Account and authorize the Board of Selectmen to accept on behalf of the Town a deed from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts conveying said property to the Town .- Board of Selectmen.
Motion by Finance Committee:
That action on the subject matter of Article 11 be deferred until the next annual town meeting.

After considerable debate, at 10.15 P. M., a motion that the Previous Question be now put was duly made and seconded. The vote, however, was in the negative, and Harry P. Sparks then offered the following motion :
That the Town vote to purchase from the Commonwealth of Massa- chusetts, at a cost not exceeding $1.00 as provided for in Chapter 679 of the Acts of the year 1949, the land and appurtenances now owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and under control of the Metropolitan District Commission. The said property being adjacent to Quannapowitt Lake and including Quannapowitt Parkway and other land bordering on said parkway, all as described in an instrument of taking by said com- mission dated July 19th, 1916 and recorded with Middlesex South District Deeds, Book 4072, Page 264, and in an instrument of taking by said Com- mission dated February 24th, 1926 and recorded in said deeds Book 4941, Page 485, and appropriate the sum of $1.00 to pay therefor, the same to be taken from the Excess and Deficiency Account, and authorize the Board of Selectmen to accept on behalf of the Town a deed from the Common- wealth of Massachusetts conveying said property to the Town.
After debate, at 10.30 P. M., Arthur L. Gardner moved the "Previous Question," and the vote on the motion was in the affirmative.
The Moderator appointed the following tellers to count the vote on Mr. Sparks' motion to purchase, as it would require a two-thirds vote to pass: William R. Lindsay and Fred C. Scott for the south section, Sidney S. Watts and Maurice C. McGilvray for the centre, and Patrick H. Tenney and Kenneth W. Thomson for the south section.
The result of the vote, as reported by the tellers, was 156 in the affirm- ative and 84 in the negative, and the Moderator declared that, lacking the necessary two-thirds, the motion was not carried.
Motion by Patrick H. Tenney:
That the same committee be appointed by the Moderator to bring in a further report on the subject matter of Article 11 at the next annual town meeting.
An amendment, duly made and seconded, that the committee be sup- plemented by at least four additional members to be appointed by the chair, was accepted by Mr. Tenney, and was favorably voted.
Mr. Tenney's motion, as amended, then was voted in the affirmative.
ARTICLE 12
To see if the Town will accept as a gift for Park purposes from the Clayton Foundry Incorporated the following described parcel of land, be- ginning at a point on the northerly boundary line of Water Street 172.93 feet easterly from the intersection of Water Street and Melvin Street; thence the line runs northerly by land which the town recently voted to acquire about 19 feet thence northeasterly by land of the Town of Wake- field about 22 feet then southerly by land of Clayton Foundry Inc. about 30 feet; thence westerly by Water Street to point of beginning .- Park and Cemetery Department.

To see if the Town will grant to H. M. Warren Camp #34 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, the free use of a room in the Lafayette Building where they may hold their meetings and social gatherings and keep their mementos of the Civil War at no expense to the town .- William L. Drew and Others.
On motion by Finance Committee:
Voted: That the Town vote to grant to H. M. Warren Camp 34, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, free use of a room in the Lafayette Building for the purpose of holding their meetings and social gatherings and keeping their mementos of the Civil War, with the understanding that there be no expense to the Town.
