As in the past the Committee reviewed the teachers' salary schedule and as a result the following schedule will be in effect on September 1, 1961.

Bachelor's Degree

Master's Degree

Women $4200-6500

Women $4500-6800

Men $4400-6700 Men $4700-7000

In addition to the above there is an additional $300 after 15 years experience and a further $300 for those with 30 points of collegiate credit beyond a Master's Degree.

The Committee feels that this schedule is one which gives due recog- nition to our teaching staff and at the same time is one which the tax- payers can meet without undue burden.

With our almost completed building program and with the constant watch over the academic part of our system by our able and conscientious staff the Committee without being complacent feels that Wakefield can feel proud of its school system.

149TH ANNUAL REPORT

To Members of the Wakefield School Committee:

My part of the annual report will supplement in a brief manner some of the accomplishments and changes that have taken place in our school system during the year 1960. Many of these items have been discussed and reported on more fully and in greater detail at the regular meetings with the Committee.

Our High School has undergone a complete evaluation during the year. All members of professional people participated in a three-day review of the High School program. This evaluation is most valuable in defining the strengths, weaknesses, and needs of the school. It will prove most bene- ficial in our immediate as well as our long-range planning for the future.

Additional advanced placement groups have been organized in the senior high school. The grouping by ability in the high school is proving most beneficial.

A 30 place language laboratory was installed in the high school for use in the language department. This was made possible partly through funds obtained through the National Defense Education Act.

The guidance program was further strengthened during the past year with the addition of personnel and many materials. A placement service has been provided in the central office for efficiency and uniformity. 53% of the high school graduates of 1960 are pursuing further education in 58 different institutions.

The occupancy of the new junior high school in December has elimin- ated our housing problem in the secondary schools. With the planned opening of the West Side Elementary School in September 1961, Wakefield pupils will be adequately housed in the number of classrooms needed.

The 7th, 8th and 9th grades have worked under trying circumstances for most of the past year. The staff and students are to be commended for the attitude that they have displayed and the accomplishments they have made under these conditions.

Junior High School students continue to use our school library to a greater extent. During the past year over 12,000 books were circulated from the junior high school library. This reflects the interest in reading of our young people.

Classes in French and Spanish have been inaugurated in the junior high school program. This is on a purely elective basis.

The results of our testing program indicate the high degree of efficiency attained by our youth, with standard test results of Wakefield students well above the national average.

A complete study of home work practices and the establishment of a philosophy regarding home work was made by the elementary principals and is now uniformly in operation in the elementary schools.

A highlight of the year was the Art Exhibit held in the Atwell Gym- nasium in May. This covered all phases of elementary art work and the creative activity of the students was easily recognizable.

The staff under each elementary principal is working on one particular area of education. The results of these studies will be studied and analyzed for future recommendation and adoption in all elementary schools.

TOWN OF WAKEFIELD

Studies being made at present are:

a. The improvement of marking and reporting to parents so that eval- uation of student accomplishments will have greater reliability.

b. A study of the language arts with special emphasis on supplement- ing oral language.

c. A study of the use of library and reference books at the elementary level.

d. Written language and its improvement.

A Survey Committee of lay citizens studied the transportation of chil- dren in Wakefield particularly as it related to children attending the new junior high school. Their report was submitted to the School Committee for its study and consideration.

Two of our veteran teachers retired in 1960.

Mrs. Lillian S. Mackenzie with 32 years in the system.

Mr. Raymond S. Dower with 42 years in the system. Head of the Busi- ness Education Department in the High School.

These teachers have contributed many years of faithful and devoted service to the youth of Wakefield and deserve the commendation of our citizens.

Recommendations for further study.

Establishment of a summer school at the Junior and Senior high schools for both remedial and enrichment work.

Every consideration to be given to the furtherance of a townwide schol- arship awards program.

Begin to think in terms of the need of a longer school day and a longer school year.
