TOWN OF WAKEFIELD
REPORT OF THE LIBRARY TRUSTEES
The Trustees of the Lucius Beebe Memorial Library consider the year 1960 as most successful in the operation of the library. Our Head Librarian, Miss D. Marjorie Taylor, in her report, brings out the ever-important part our public library plays as a cultural center for the Town of Wakefield, as evidenced both by the increased circulation in books and records, and the many displays and exhibitions that have been held at the library. The Trustees and the staff have encouraged the use of the library as a meeting place for cultural groups and definite steps have been taken to use the library more for this purpose. Such organizations as the Arts and Crafts, Wake- field Garden Club, Wakefield Historical Society, Wakefield Art Association and the two Great Books groups have held meetings in the library lecture hall this past year, as have many other smaller groups.
At the present time both the main library and the two branches are in excellent physical condition and with the cooperation of the Finance Committee, we have been able to do the necessary repairs, painting, etc.
We are very glad that our Head Librarian, and other members of the staff have been active during the past year in the activities of the various library associations in the state. Miss Taylor served as Secretary this past year for The Metropolitan Boston Library Planning Council whose pur- pose is to study the problems and to promote cooperation among the thirty-five libraries in the metropolitan area. Mrs. Evelyn Henderson, Supervisor Adult Services, represented the library at the meeting of the American and Canadian National Library Association held in Montreal.
The Trustees wish to express their appreciation to the National Library Week Committee composed of Mr. Robert G. Reed, Mrs. Donald White, Mrs. Frank A. Tredinnick, Dr. Alfred Donovan, Mr. Paul Bates, Mr. Lucian Colucci, Rev. Horace Seldon, Dr. Lillian Clement, Miss Bernice Caswell, Mrs. Robert Pollack and Mrs. David Hodgdon. This committee presented an outstanding program for the citizens of Wakefield during National Library Week. One of the highlights of the week of celebration was the presentation of a high fidelity record player and recordings to the Library by the 9:29ers Banjo Club of the Congregational Church, for the use of the citizens of the town in the Library Music Room.
For a number of years the Trustees have been cognizant of the fact that the present physical buildings are inadequate for proper library service and definite steps must be taken to increase the facilities. At the town meeting in March, the Town Moderator appointed a Survey Com- mittee to conduct a long-range survey of the library needs of the Town. The committee, which has been meeting since its appointment last spring consists of the Chairman, Mr. Omar K. Salmassy, Mrs. Merle Jones, Mr. Melvin Peach, Mr. Phillips Davis and Mr. Edward Lynch. This committee will make an interim report at the Annual Town Meeting in March 1961 and will plan to make a final report at the 1962 Annual Town Meeting, since they wish to have the benefit of the town-wide survey being con- ducted by the Town Planning Board which will not be available until the spring or summer of 1961.
The Trustees wish to express their appreciation not only to Miss Tay- lor, but to the other members of the staff for their excellent work during

1961 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN
"The true University of these days is a collection of books." So wrote Thomas Carlyle more than a hundred years ago, and the remark is as true today as it was then. In these days of overcrowded schools and col- leges, and of increased demand in business and industry for further education of personnel, more and more people are turning to the public libraries for help. Public libraries have always been used for recreational reading, and still are, but now they are used equally for educational reading.
During the past year our book circulation rose from 204,320 to 221,895 and the percentage of non-fiction reading from 48.3% in 1959 to 52.3% in 1960. This is only one aspect of the use of the library as an educational aid. Our reference room and high school room are crowded day after day with students, and the large number of questions answered by staff mem- bers is yet another indication of this seeking for knowledge.
In our attempt to satisfy our borrowers we have added over 4,000 volumes to our book stock, including a number of new reference tools. Among these might be mentioned a Dictionary of American Usage, Merck Index of Chemicals and Drugs, Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, Who's Who in Commerce and Industry, The Encyclopedia of World Art and The American Catholic Who's Who. In the Youth Room we added the Larousse Encyclopedia of Astronomy, Dictionary of Discoveries, Natural Sciences Illustrated, Historical Atlas of the Holy Land and the McGraw Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology. A new edition of the Encyclo- pedia Americana was added to each of the branch libraries. New periodicals included Banker and Tradesman, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientist, The Massachusetts Review and the New England Galaxy. In addition, inventory of the non-fiction stock has been taken and obsolete books discarded and the catalog revised.
This year many people have taken an interest in new books and 254 titles were added in response to borrowers' requests, compared to 177 last year and 120 the year before. Our collection of phonograph records was brought into greater prominence this year by the gift of a record player and money for a number of records. These were presented by the 9:29ers Banjo Club at the opening Tea in celebration of National Library week on April 3rd. During the year the circulation of recordings, both musical and spoken, increased fifteen percent over 1959.

TOWN OF WAKEFIELD
Passage of a bill to provide State Aid for public libraries in Massachu- setts has brought the question of cooperation between libraries to the fore- front. In this connection it is interesting to note that while we have borrowed fifty-five books from other libraries to fill requests of our bor- rowers, we have lent to other libraries one hundred books. We have borrowed from Melrose, Malden, Reading, Watertown, Arlington and Ever- ett, and loaned to Lynnfield, Reading, Stoneham and Melrose. We have also borrowed collections of Swedish, Polish, French, German and Russian books from the Massachusetts Library Commission.
As the last census figures show, Wakefield is a growing community, and this is reflected in the new people who use the library. America is on the move, and our new borrowers come from as far away as Ohio, California or Europe and from as close at hand as Stoneham, Reading or Somerville. At the same time many people are moving from Wakefield, sometimes without turning in their library cards. In order to have a more accurate file of registrations, all borrowers are being asked to sign new forms as their present cards expire so that we may eliminate inactive registrations. So far since August we have registered 1,580 borrowers, including 590 new people.
The Youth Room continues to be well used. On many days all the tables are filled and we could use more if we had the space for them. During the year we added height to the bookshelves to accommodate more books, now there is no room for further expansion of any kind.
Our Youth librarian, Mrs. Edith Stewart resigned at the end of August to work in the High School library. At the same time the Junior High School, while waiting for the new building to be completed, went into double sessions. Children who went to school in the afternoon came to the library to study in the morning. With no Youth librarian this meant additional strain on the library staff, but at the beginning of Decem- ber Mrs. Bush was appointed acting Youth librarian, the new school building was opened, and things returned to normal. It is still too early to judge whether the existence of an extremely good library at the new Junior High School will relieve the pressure on our Youth Room library, but we certainly hope it will. Meantime, the Beebe Library continues to help students of all kinds.
Work with children is an important part of any library, and the report from our Children's librarian, Mrs. Kathryn Duggan, recognizes this. Pre- school story hours and school age film programs have been very well attended, while the summer program of library instruction, story telling and films attracted between 150 and 200 children weekly during the summer vacation. At the same time fifty talented children came for instruction weekly during their five week session of summer school. Many kinder- garten and lower grade children visited the library with their teachers during the year, and Mrs. Duggan visited all the grades before the summer vacation to explain the summer program, while Mrs. Stewart talked to the sixth grade students about transferring to the Youth Room.
